00:02 | I would like to welcome you all biology 41 3 This is integration of |
00:07 | knowledge. What some people call the class you'll ever take as a biology |
00:13 | . Houston, I'm Dr Wayne, I'm going to be your instructor |
00:19 | But most of her contact is gonna with your TA anyway. So you're |
00:25 | one of two sections are really one four sections. We have the Monday |
00:29 | and that Wednesday section some of you up for the face to face while |
00:34 | you signed up for the arm line . And since we don't have a |
00:37 | of people face to face class, just much easier if I just kind |
00:40 | lump everybody together. And so that's we're doing everything online for the class |
00:46 | from which, when you did if you signed up for Monday's |
00:50 | whether it's face to face or you're coming to the Monday class. |
00:53 | don't get to come with Wednesday class versa, because there specific things that |
00:57 | could be doing with your group in day. So this light here's how |
01:03 | our contact information. So I'm Dr I'm great out because, really, |
01:08 | you're gonna be doing any sort of and contact your primarily gonna be doing |
01:12 | with 30 A. So your tea gonna be sleeves Robertson. Her contact |
01:17 | is there s o might wanna posit and write it down so that it's |
01:23 | your books and stuff. But the of you actually ever wanted to make |
01:27 | appointment with either one of us to the class is very low. |
01:31 | over the last eight years, nine , one since I've been teaching, |
01:34 | think I've had one office, our with a student. So anyway, |
01:41 | our contact information. So before we into what the classes and what it |
01:48 | these air, some important ideas, policy points. Typically, you can |
01:53 | this information just by going to the edge front page and then just doing |
01:57 | quick search. The search terms I'm here and blue for you. Eso |
02:02 | first thing is, you should know . Dates are important, especially for |
02:06 | of you who are seniors, not for the add and drop dates, |
02:10 | there are actually specific dates that you for example, signing up for when |
02:15 | going to graduate. You know when pay certainties and views. So what |
02:20 | want to do is you want to where your record in the calendar |
02:22 | So be sure, Teoh. Just a quick search for academic calendar on |
02:30 | will pop up the calendar for the and what you can look up all |
02:33 | information you need to know for this . Four drops you can see |
02:39 | September 9th is the drop for this that a grade, whereas the third |
02:44 | November is last created drop with W , if you're considering dropping the class |
02:49 | four w really, really, you need to one email me and talk |
02:53 | me about that because you'll find that is class that, um, is |
02:58 | particularly difficulty in the last Anyone who repeated if you if you can avoid |
03:02 | so. Secondly, his academic, , honesty here we don't want you |
03:07 | , cheat or steal. This is basis basics of just being a functional |
03:15 | of society. If you want to what all the legalese is under |
03:20 | that you can just type in undergraduate . I could have gone misty. |
03:23 | will talk about all the fun stuff gets to happen if you get caught |
03:28 | or stealing or lying to somebody. , if you need accommodations, I |
03:33 | to put this in here. You used a search term CSD, or |
03:38 | can go to the website www dot edu ucsd and you can find out |
03:43 | the information you know to seek I would add, for this |
03:49 | there's very limited accommodations. Much of way the classes design is to test |
03:55 | challenge you at a rate that is constant. So, for example, |
04:03 | will be taking quizzes in the A quiz is 30 minutes accommodated students |
04:07 | are none. You will be taking quiz online in 30 minutes time. |
04:13 | just part of the course design. not negotiable anyway, So before we |
04:20 | that we kind of just covered those , What I want to do is |
04:23 | want to just kind of show you things you're gonna need for the |
04:25 | And I'm gonna show you how the is more less made up. |
04:30 | for the for the semester. So will need a textbook. It is |
04:33 | freshman biology textbook on, but I that you're sitting. I don't want |
04:37 | buy fresh involved. I don't blame already then from from biology. But |
04:43 | , we need this because the major that we're trying to accomplish in this |
04:49 | at the end of the semester is take the major field test in |
04:52 | And so part of this is to Prep for that class and for that |
04:57 | . And so I've chosen this textbook one I've got a cheap deal for |
05:03 | and to it provides you that resource you can go to That's nice and |
05:09 | and easy to get the basic knowledge need if you need it. All |
05:15 | , so you want principles of a . Its third edition. It's by |
05:19 | . It's a McGraw hill, but it comes with learn smart, |
05:22 | Miller smarts. A key thing This is all digital, so there |
05:26 | no hard cover. All right? second thing you're gonna need is you're |
05:29 | need to goto learning Catholics dot which is a Pearson product Personal and |
05:34 | Hill. Two different companies and they like each other for very good |
05:39 | Now, learning catalytic is a way answer questions. It's kind of a |
05:43 | system that I think is superior to all the other ones. And you |
05:47 | need to get a semester's work. I think you're gonna spend, |
05:50 | $12 for that. Um, um, those are the two items |
05:55 | need to buy for the class. , most of our information is going |
06:03 | be delivered through blackboard. So you to know how to use blackboard. |
06:07 | I suspect now that you've been here several years, blackboard is not particularly |
06:12 | to you. This is where you'll the entire syllabus, and I encourage |
06:16 | to read it. It has all policy points in it. This is |
06:19 | I make announcements. A. if I make an announcement, I |
06:21 | send it out as a blast But it will be posted in that |
06:25 | section. All your assignments are gonna found in blackboard. So these are |
06:30 | papers that you need to read Is your baby taking links to the |
06:34 | property? When we do it, that stuff is gonna be sound on |
06:39 | also if there's a power point, if you guys need to have, |
06:42 | will be posted there as well. , so this is just kind of |
06:48 | that, uh, that place where need to go. All right, |
06:52 | everything you're gonna need is basically in . Now, how your class breaks |
06:58 | is we're gonna have the major field , will have these quizzes that your |
07:02 | , and then we have homework assignments that that are linked to the |
07:07 | All right. And then there's some work that you're gonna have to do |
07:11 | on the papers that you're gonna be , and then you do have to |
07:14 | attend to be involved in these group activities. Eso you put all these |
07:20 | , and that's the majority of the . And then right now, there's |
07:23 | be two kind of pre assignments. is also included, so you can |
07:28 | how those breaks down this way. kind of parents and freaks out. |
07:32 | right, so the major field test for 50% of your final grade. |
07:38 | right, that's the goal of the . You need to, um take |
07:43 | major field test. Now, if want in a in the course, |
07:48 | have to earn at least a 50% a major field test. So even |
07:53 | you do everything right here and you a 49 here, if you added |
08:00 | all those numbers and it comes up 99 you don't get in a you |
08:04 | a B plus, all right, I have an expectation that you will |
08:09 | do better than the 50th percentile. my expectation for you. Now, |
08:13 | sounds scary instead, but I'm gonna you data basically 70% of class close |
08:18 | 80% earn and a in the So that's it's not a difficult thing |
08:23 | do. All right, but and your field test major chunk. So |
08:30 | you need is you need to prepare this major feel less, and this |
08:33 | what the master in biology quizzes. , that makes up 16% of your |
08:37 | grade and you can see again, just kind of break down 6% 16 |
08:41 | so on. You do not want ignore this stuff because it will make |
08:48 | theater 50% great. So you have lot of big, heavy things coming |
08:55 | quickly. Um, uh, you , that that you have to do |
09:00 | going to come easy. Easier than a lot of stuff to do. |
09:03 | then it's easy. Easy again. you say up here I have with |
09:07 | field tests. My next slide says the major field test, there is |
09:12 | potential that the major field test will cancelled this year. All right, |
09:16 | if that's the case, then notice just doubled double all the percentiles of |
09:26 | the other assignments. So if I back and show you here is those |
09:29 | assignments, I think right, so they are. These are all the |
09:34 | Simon c 16 16 10 8 You ignore this right now. And then |
09:39 | you go over here, what do see? 32 30 to 2016 has |
09:44 | doubled what that is. So we to presume that we're taking the major |
09:49 | test. This is why we treat of these different things as being |
09:55 | And then if what happens is we take me in your field tests, |
09:58 | you're not gonna be getting a D seeing a class that you need to |
10:02 | in order. Graduate. All but if you have a major field |
10:07 | , then the weight of these is be a lot less so, |
10:13 | we have three lectures. All so the first lecture, um, |
10:19 | technically this one. Okay, this is the the lecture on what the |
10:26 | is all about. So just by and watching this, you are accomplishing |
10:31 | go, You're watching one of the . Then the following week, there's |
10:36 | lecture and talks about how to go reading a paper for content. So |
10:40 | would be August 30 week of August . So I refer to weeks because |
10:45 | a money class on Wednesday class. during that week, even if you're |
10:48 | Wednesday, you're in that week of that date is. All right? |
10:53 | then at the end of the the , November night, that week we |
10:58 | one more lecture and is the major tests will do it. If we |
11:02 | , then we're just gonna get rid it. You're done for this, |
11:06 | . All right. This is how take um uh, these large, |
11:11 | , standardized exams. What are some the tricks and tips that you should |
11:15 | ? All right, so three basic , this one how to read the |
11:20 | literature and then finding these tests test trips of even this semester. So |
11:25 | you don't have to show up to , You just watch them at some |
11:28 | during the week. All right, thing you're gonna do, or |
11:33 | I want to point out Here is we don't have class. So the |
11:36 | of September 7th is Labor Day. Monday we wouldn't have class, and |
11:41 | going to get to class is out sync. So Monday and Wednesday, |
11:44 | get the day off so that weak no class. So it's like the |
11:49 | to 31st vacation back to school, through Thanksgiving break. Well, not |
11:56 | . Because after November night, which be our last this year Old class |
12:02 | , what you're doing, You're doing major field test. All right, |
12:05 | we remember. All right, so that, that break, we're going |
12:11 | start coming into some actual assignments. right, So first off, we |
12:17 | overview assessment So after watching this all right, there is a an |
12:23 | on blackboard that's going to become All right. It opens at 10 |
12:28 | After, after whatever your classes. everything is gonna be congruent to your |
12:32 | time. So even if you don't up to watch the video at 9 |
12:36 | The I presume you watch that So is over 10. So this |
12:42 | when the content becomes available. So assessment will become available after the |
12:46 | and it's open for three weeks, ? This is the only one that's |
12:50 | for a long period of time. right, the second thing after |
12:54 | So then you're gonna have another right? The's are need to be |
13:02 | before the class on the 14th or class on the 16th. All |
13:09 | The idea here is your reading a , and you're going to sit in |
13:13 | group and you're gonna discuss the and then you're gonna answer some |
13:16 | all right, based on some of work that you've done. And so |
13:21 | are are very simple assignments. It's read the paper, answer some |
13:25 | turn it into eternity. and so can see the dates here. So |
13:29 | already in late September 4 classes Late September. Finally, we come |
13:38 | the middle of semester, and this where everyone kind of hates the |
13:42 | All right. You've ever had a of taking the class already had sex |
13:45 | . All these quizzes were all So in the middle of the |
13:48 | starting with mid September, you're going start taking quizzes. Each of these |
13:56 | represents a discipline within the field of . And so you can kind of |
14:02 | what we have here. We have and cell biology. Physiology is animal |
14:07 | genetics, evolution, ecology, and plants in terms of plant physiology, |
14:14 | basic subjects. And these quizzes are be done on Black 40. All |
14:19 | , you're gonna be needing Teoh. the responders browser instructions already there on |
14:25 | . What you need and they're gonna available. That's a 30 minute |
14:28 | The quiz becomes available at 10 a.m. Monday from among the class closing six |
14:32 | Orphan Wednesday. Class becomes available attending on Wednesday closed at 16. So |
14:37 | some time after class, on that , you have to take one of |
14:40 | quizzes. All right, that's 38 . 30 minutes, all right? |
14:45 | so you're basically just be firing these out. Now. We know, |
14:53 | on years and years of doing what student performances is on these |
14:57 | And so we have a scaled score is posted on blackboard, and so |
15:01 | can look at how many got You can figure out what your percentile |
15:06 | , and if you got above the percentile, then you're exempt from the |
15:12 | pick sign. But if you then you are required to do to |
15:16 | us, right? And so, each of these different things, these |
15:20 | fields, you're going to be doing . Quit? Yeah, we're looking |
15:24 | this going. Why am I doing ? So that's 48 seconds per question |
15:28 | the rate at which you take the field test? Alright, Major field |
15:32 | is 150 questions over two hours. right, so that's just the |
15:42 | And so we want you used to pace of answering these knowledge based biology |
15:49 | , um, in preparation for the field test. So let's say you |
15:53 | take these tests. You quizzes. me. Test these quizzes. And |
15:57 | what's the what's the follow up What does it look like? |
16:01 | the follow up assignment are the learned . All right? And so this |
16:07 | , um, of basically a series questions. You can see what is |
16:12 | like, right, and in what it does. It allows you |
16:16 | self assess. That basically says, , I know I didn't do as |
16:19 | , but one of the things I what we're doing, things that I |
16:21 | know in this particular area. And it's going to draw questions for you |
16:26 | order for you to to help hone and focus on the things that you |
16:31 | know in that particular distance. for example, million never took plant |
16:38 | . Some of you did. But grand majority of our students don't take |
16:42 | right. So the likelihood you're not do really well on that portion, |
16:45 | might guess your way through, but probably not gonna have the 75th |
16:50 | Well, you're gonna have to do learned smart assignments. And what it's |
16:53 | do is it's going to drill you plant fizz in such a way that |
17:00 | will help you do better on the field. So again, it's only |
17:05 | small portion, about 16% of your grade, but it needs to be |
17:09 | . And let me explain how this , all right, because this does |
17:12 | a little bit confusing. Have the me of the home, all |
17:15 | And they go together. All Um, when the homework opens |
17:21 | it's gonna be open for about 13 . So you basically quiz. |
17:26 | I've got to do the homework. have 13 days to take to complete |
17:30 | assignment. In each of these homework are huge. They are not |
17:33 | Oh, I'll just take between they will take you 8 to 12 |
17:37 | . So usually what you do is about an hour day every day. |
17:42 | , if you don't get in that in the top 25th percentile. In |
17:46 | words, you don't reach that threshold 75% off. You have to do |
17:50 | home. There is no choice. you skip your quiz, you're gonna |
17:54 | a zero for the entire assignment. you take the quiz. Always take |
17:58 | quiz, See where you stand because a way to self assess. And |
18:02 | what you're gonna do is you're gonna has to do it or you're gonna |
18:05 | the option. So if you're if in the bottom 75th, right, |
18:10 | lesson 75 it's required, all And what you do on the homework |
18:17 | gonna substitute for whatever your quiz percent was. All right. But let's |
18:22 | you blow it off. Let's say do. Let's say on the on |
18:26 | queers you got in the seventh so you're just shy. But she |
18:30 | on the homework and get bored. so you do 50%. Well, |
18:34 | gonna give you the 50 percentile because expecting you to work so that she |
18:40 | do better on the major field All right, Now, if you'd |
18:45 | above the 75th percentile and you decide do the homeward well, I'm gonna |
18:49 | you whatever the best score is. right? So again, let's say |
18:53 | get for here. You get in 80th percentile, you start sitting down |
18:57 | doing the homework, but you get of doing and you get the 50th |
19:00 | in 10 or 15% of homework. , I'm not gonna punish you for |
19:04 | the homework. I'm glad that you it. But you did well enough |
19:08 | I think you're gonna be fine on major field. So you get your |
19:12 | All right? So basically, when optional, the higher to the |
19:18 | The two grades counts What is The homer grade is always the |
19:24 | All right. Your review here's all directed. As I said, it's |
19:28 | to 12 hours of work, so get, decide one that's gonna |
19:32 | You have about 13 days to get done. All right. They will |
19:38 | close at 11. 59. There's chapters that are being done here. |
19:42 | why you have to be on top it. So those 13 days basically |
19:47 | for from 6 p.m. On the quiz till midnight before the next quiz. |
19:57 | while you're doing all that fun stuff you're taking the quizzes during those six |
20:01 | , the other thing that you're gonna doing is you're going to be doing |
20:05 | discussions. And so, in order group discussions you need to have |
20:08 | catalytic. So all right, learning simply is a way to answer questions |
20:16 | a group discussion. Eso you basically to each other in your groups, |
20:21 | then you respond to the questions that send to you. All right? |
20:25 | these aren't just going to multiple Sometimes it might be. Draw this |
20:28 | . What do you think this graph look like it might be? Find |
20:31 | picture. So the idea here is it allows you to answer questions more |
20:36 | rather than just most straight up multiple . So the other half of the |
20:44 | weeks said it gets really, really cuisine. Your homework's, you're gonna |
20:48 | these group discussions. And so what gonna do here is we're really gonna |
20:51 | challenging it to be biologists. All , that's what you've been training for |
20:56 | the last four years. And so idea here is that you picked up |
20:59 | biology that you should be able to at and read through and discuss the |
21:06 | literature. All right. And so you're gonna be given different papers that |
21:13 | associated with each of the different major right. So again, there will |
21:18 | a biochemistry paper that your genetics there'll be a physiology paper. And |
21:24 | here you're gonna demonstrate that you can the scientific literature, use language, |
21:31 | biology, interpret data and then critique conclusions. All right. And so |
21:37 | put here that you're gonna learn So if you've never done this |
21:41 | you're actually putting your biological knowledge in application form. But if you've done |
21:47 | before, then this is gonna be peasy. It's just a matter of |
21:50 | reading papers. All right, so gonna put you in rand groups. |
21:54 | will be done right after Labor off siding groups. You'll be in |
21:59 | groups for these discussions. You have show up for these things. So |
22:04 | is a 90 10 o'clock required attendance in that week or really a little |
22:11 | before them. All right. One the people in the group is gonna |
22:16 | required to lead the discussion. All , so everyone in the group that |
22:20 | going to groups of six, So is going to be a leader one |
22:24 | , and so you guys have to out what that order of presentation. |
22:28 | gonna be the leader which week? have to figure that out. Get |
22:31 | submitted to us so that we know you've actually talked about it. And |
22:34 | you're gonna have to actually talk about paper, All right, Because this |
22:37 | what scientists do. We moved in . We talk about the literature and |
22:42 | explored and see how it's applicable to of the work that we're doing or |
22:47 | the field in general. All so what? We're going to give |
22:51 | a paper? Now, I'm gonna you right now, there's a theme |
22:53 | this this year. And if you to get, give yourself a second |
22:57 | think about What do you think the is going to be this year? |
23:01 | could be the great scientific stuff? , its viruses. And specifically we're |
23:07 | to talk specifically, I hope about Corona viruses. But of the papers |
23:13 | have selected, I have to select plant paper. So there's a paper |
23:17 | plant viruses, and one of the was on influenza that I saw that |
23:21 | thought was really interesting. That is right. So there's air paint leaves |
23:26 | paper about ecology. There's evolution, name it. We found a virus |
23:31 | so that you're gonna be so tired viruses that you say I'm tired of |
23:35 | masks and tired of reading about these things. I'm done with this |
23:39 | All right, So you're gonna be these papers between you have to read |
23:43 | paper before you come to the group . And then what you're doing is |
23:46 | gonna come online and you're gonna go Microsoft Teams, which I'll talk about |
23:50 | second, which is not a lot information. I'm still learning. So |
23:54 | gonna be in breakout groups in Microsoft in the Group of Six of one |
24:00 | in here at five other participants, leader's job is basically to kind of |
24:05 | discussion. You're not to be a . You're just there to make sure |
24:08 | everyone is doing the assignment and making that people are talking about that's really |
24:15 | you, in essence, what it . And then you're responsible for submitting |
24:19 | information to the TA after the after class. Everybody else, what do |
24:24 | do? Well, you make sure show up because If you do |
24:27 | you need to be prepared. In words, you've read the papers were |
24:30 | to talk about it. So then talk about it, and then everybody |
24:35 | will be answering questions in the last of class. So if you can |
24:39 | about it like this, the class technically a 50 minute class. The |
24:43 | 20 minutes you're gonna sit. You're talk about the paper, things that |
24:46 | like didn't like things you understood. understand. It could be the 1st |
24:51 | minutes it's gonna be in their And then the last 20 to 30 |
24:55 | is we're gonna throw five or six at you to answer right about the |
25:01 | . And they could be a simple . What does this mean? You |
25:03 | , or what do you think about ? Or it could be. Tell |
25:06 | why this was important, you So the idea is to give you |
25:12 | to to show that you guys have talked about the paper. So you |
25:17 | be using teens. This is not be the only class might be doing |
25:20 | , So I don't think I need explain this, but just in case |
25:22 | not aware of it, you have a license to Microsoft Office 3 65 |
25:29 | part of your all right just by a student here, so you need |
25:34 | have access to that. So you to know what your sugar idea is |
25:39 | how to log into my soft All right by some teams is the |
25:45 | that we're using to do, like online classes. So it's easier to |
25:52 | the app if you will ask Do you want do this in the |
25:55 | ? Just say, download the app it gives you much more flexibility and |
26:01 | . It's actually a pretty well written , not going to say it's a |
26:05 | program if the application is actually not or anything. All right, now |
26:11 | it's when we set up for what gonna look like in stuff I haven't |
26:15 | have got it all figured out So by the time it from ground |
26:19 | will be all set up and ready go, all right, but that's |
26:22 | it's gonna be. So you do a working webcam. You cannot show |
26:25 | and just have a black screen with name on it. All right, |
26:29 | , far as I know, you're the other room brushing your teeth and |
26:32 | ready for your day. You when you're in a discussion, it's |
26:36 | to face. All right, These small enough groups that this is not |
26:39 | be a problem. You also need working Internet. All right, So |
26:44 | you have terrible Internet at home, the place where you're gonna have this |
26:48 | stable Internet, and that's where you're to class. All right, so |
26:52 | long as you have that working with working microphone and you have stable Internet |
26:57 | , you're good to go. All . I need that for this |
27:01 | and that is a requirement. uh, we're gonna have to practice |
27:08 | . So the first discussion is gonna on the measles install paper. This |
27:13 | basic knowledge of biology. It's basically to have a how is DNA replicated |
27:19 | famous paper from before the 19 It was like 47 lives when it |
27:25 | written. So I will be a of the 14th, and then the |
27:28 | of the 21st. Your ta is have a paper that you guys are |
27:32 | read. That one that she's more with so that she can ask you |
27:36 | questions in class about that, you , you're not have leaders is just |
27:40 | show you how to get in the and see how you can talk about |
27:43 | you're gonna. So here it's it's just trying to get used to the |
27:49 | of, you know, And then we get to the week of the |
27:53 | of September, that's when all the discussions happen. Ones that I've just |
27:58 | with all the virus paper. All . So, again, you'll know |
28:02 | to do it before we start, you're gonna have two weeks of practice |
28:09 | a major field test. All So what about the major field |
28:13 | Well, this is what the purpose this class is. 150. My |
28:18 | questions. Two hours to take the . It's administered between november 16th of |
28:23 | 4th, basically in the measurement and center. Now, this is where |
28:29 | difficulty, because it's a in person university may not let us do |
28:36 | right. And so right now we're that is gonna happen by October. |
28:44 | should know whether or not it is happen. All right. And so |
28:48 | that point, I will make an one way or the other, whether |
28:53 | just going to presume we're taking it they flat out say you're not allowed |
28:59 | . Now, what is it will iodized exam. It helps to evaluate |
29:04 | well use learned your biology. All , is General about see your there'll |
29:09 | learning stuff or you have learned stuff goes beyond basic biology. You've taken |
29:16 | , so you understand some broad, Kim. I mean, you |
29:20 | a little bit more in debt and we're doing here Urgency to understand some |
29:24 | biochemistry. So we're just looking for . We're gonna look and see how |
29:28 | you analyze stuff We look and see your strengths and your weaknesses are, |
29:34 | helps to inform. It helps to that university in our department where we |
29:40 | to shore up your knowledge. for example, we have known historically |
29:48 | you know, we've been very, poor in plant physiology. Were t |
29:52 | biology here at all right? The exception being doctor farmers plant physiology |
29:58 | And so, you know, students take it who take that class to |
30:02 | of, well, but everyone else does fairly poorly. So we know |
30:06 | an apartment, this is an area weakness. So we try to |
30:09 | incorporate a little bit more plant biology some of the classes that we teach |
30:13 | the evolution ecology for and what it us do also helps to look at |
30:19 | a drone to feather institution, because is the nationally standardized exam were able |
30:25 | compare universities across. I mean from another. All right, so for |
30:31 | , why do you have to Well, because if you don't take |
30:33 | , you don't get to graduate. apart from that, it allows you |
30:38 | really kind of see the value of degree. See if if we can |
30:44 | ourselves under Now, I'm gonna be frank here. I would rather teach |
30:49 | you of age and the students that have here. Then it texting |
30:52 | Even though those two schools are the schools. Arguably which one is |
30:57 | I don't know. I don't care the state, but the truth is |
31:02 | . I know the title work that guys do. You guys are really |
31:06 | of the underdogs here. But if went into a place of business, |
31:11 | hate to tell you this, but person is hiring you, looks at |
31:14 | degree and already has a certain bias it on. I'll give you the |
31:18 | simple example. I mean, if look at a person and everything, |
31:22 | things being equal person went to rising to you evade. Who are the |
31:27 | in the position I'm gonna pick? gonna pick the person from rice because |
31:32 | degree contain carries with it value. a There's a certain bias that's already |
31:38 | into it. Oh, it's a school, one of the best in |
31:42 | country, right? What is your ? Were state school were not even |
31:47 | flagship state school? All right, what we want to do is we |
31:52 | to have some sort of metric that that that your location is as good |
31:57 | if not better than, others. this is what this is and |
32:00 | And so, you know, as performance on this exam increases, you |
32:07 | , that speaks volumes to the people follow this stuff that, you |
32:12 | you're they put produce a really strong student. You know, their bile |
32:17 | are Sam, and this is gonna the value of your degree. All |
32:22 | , So the other thing you prepare the major field task, right? |
32:25 | , while you're apparently made field testing preparing for standardized exams again, he's |
32:30 | going out the window because of all covert fund stuff. But it's just |
32:37 | form of preparation. Now, as mentioned, it's interesting grade. You |
32:42 | to get a A and I say minus just between the A brain. |
32:45 | order, get a in the right, you have to get at |
32:51 | percentile. All right, But there's bottom threshold. You can't just go |
32:56 | there, select all see, if don't get a 15% or better than |
33:00 | don't pass the class. In other , less than 15% is an automatic |
33:05 | for the class. I have an that you're smarter than 15% of the |
33:10 | , that you've learned enough biology that smarter than 15% of people, so |
33:17 | at least 15% top and above the percentile would be great. And just |
33:24 | know, this I haven't given you this is not all the data right |
33:27 | I've ever had. You can see stops here in 2016. So I |
33:32 | four more years of this stuff, I just got tired of making this |
33:35 | . In essence, you know, students, you know, score in |
33:41 | above the 50th percentile. That's what is all telling you, like in |
33:46 | years is like, Look, you , we have a lot of students |
33:49 | are really, really hot. In , look at where our highest group |
33:52 | . Just generally speaking, you 15% of our class is in the |
33:57 | percentile, so you guys are gonna fine. So all those scary things |
34:02 | you're putting in your mind. No, this is none other. |
34:05 | worry about it. You know, guys are fully capable of performing just |
34:09 | on this. You know, they a very small her horn. That |
34:15 | all right. And that's actually you see What is that slope look like |
34:19 | when I implemented that rule of the . That's when it started. People |
34:24 | started studying and starting to prepare for . And they took the exam |
34:29 | So that's what I want you to of considers. Take this seriously. |
34:33 | if it happens to be cancelled, all right. Well, it was |
34:36 | wasn't time wasted. It is you know, just what it |
34:42 | So remember, I said there's six periods that you have to attend. |
34:47 | right, attend them. All You have to go to those those |
34:53 | six group discussion and then there's also two others before it. Those are |
34:59 | practice discussions you have to be All right. These account for 10% |
35:04 | your great if you show up, it. I mean, check |
35:07 | I showed up. All right, make sure you do that. And |
35:13 | , if we're gonna make a field , there is a sign If you |
35:16 | to sign up on time, all ? You don't sign up on |
35:19 | I'm gonna just start taking points off top because it's a real pain in |
35:22 | butt. So don't now. I've it all out, and so I |
35:27 | want in on a negative note, it's more fun that way. So |
35:31 | really easy to get a name, class. It's actually really easy to |
35:33 | the class. In fact, you get a D in this class. |
35:36 | can't get a C minus in the . The worst you can get this |
35:39 | if you do, Everything I tell to do is a C. If |
35:42 | get above the 15% time you do your homework, you're getting a |
35:46 | All right, so I need your . That's awesome. That's that's all |
35:50 | care about, right? We want get out of here. But let's |
35:53 | that you're lazy and the senior i out the wazoo and you have nothing |
35:57 | to do other than watch streamers on . And you still have a lot |
36:03 | Netflix to catch up with. So don't feel like all right, |
36:08 | you want to tell the class. how you do know shop class when |
36:11 | need to. So no, show those points right off. They'll |
36:16 | All right, so the TA will in two different groups and see how |
36:20 | were going. All right, you're to be participating in the leader of |
36:24 | group is actually determining whether you're So if you're not participating in |
36:29 | I don't care what type of introvert biology is about introverts. This is |
36:34 | we shine. There's an opportunity to and you have a safe space because |
36:39 | behind the screen. There's nothing stupid . You can say. I think |
36:42 | you can do that can make people . Oh, you're a terrible |
36:46 | So participate. All right, But you're turning off your screen or not |
36:50 | attention or not showing up or doing stuff gonna know we know those things |
36:57 | , you know, we've been to to wave have been involved like that |
37:01 | years. All right, Alright, get your homework. It's nothing. |
37:06 | prepped for the major field test prep the major field test. You don't |
37:11 | think that you're gonna do well. not giving you busy work something. |
37:16 | , there's just busy work. You're . No, I hate busy |
37:19 | I can avoid busy work. I . I try to make it so |
37:21 | a simple on the streamlined as but the other thing I do is |
37:25 | try to make sure that you're doing right things in order to be |
37:31 | All right, So I explained to , why do stuff? All |
37:35 | it's all about getting your preparation ready that major field. So do it |
37:42 | finally blow up, make you feel . That's an easy one. Just |
37:44 | there and answer c all the way and, you know, hey, |
37:49 | that. And I guarantee I'll see the next semester. And trust |
37:53 | this is not foreign to me. had a student who took the class |
37:57 | times before he started. Figured Oh, he really means it. |
38:02 | you take the exam seriously, do best. Sleep well, Don't blow |
38:06 | off. Don't wait till last Don't you know? Just try to |
38:10 | through it rushing third ship because you to get it done. We take |
38:14 | seriously, so you have to take with that. If you have |
38:19 | you can email me, um, will probably collected. I have a |
38:25 | of emails. I'll just collect those and I'll post a f a Q |
38:29 | blackboard to answer those questions. one of things you can do |
38:36 | That is over in 40 minutes. you do is you can go onto |
38:43 | and orientation. Quiz will open up 10 o'clock. Um, on. |
38:48 | know, every day that you're listening this clock and Andrew that orientation quiz |
38:54 | your first assignment Pretty straightforward. You take it as many times as you |
38:58 | to get a perfect score in That's all I ask for. Thank |
5999:59 | |
