00:05 That was probably the most uncomfortable three for those of you who are

00:09 right? Yeah. Um Actually that a beautiful sound. I don't know

00:15 many times I've come into this classroom everyone just sits quietly waiting for me

00:19 start talking. And the truth is that part of being at college?

00:23 of this is to actually start building friendships, finding the people look you

00:28 are all planning on going in the direction, so you might as well

00:31 out who your friends are and who gonna be working with, and this

00:33 one of those classes where you can that. So that was actually a

00:36 very good exercise. Uh even if talking to somebody you already know,

00:40 mean it's just it's a good thing do. Um If you don't know

00:43 dr wayne. So this is kind like the big sign up here to

00:47 of point you that you are in right classroom. I hope if you're

00:50 again, don't panic, don't you have to sit through an hour and

00:53 half of me yammering on, just up and go find where you need

00:56 go. Um So this is sec . Uh This is where we're gonna

01:01 every Tuesday thursday 8 30 the dreaded for all classes. I know I'm

01:07 a morning person either, I got into this class a couple of years

01:11 , I mean at this time and found out that I actually got all

01:14 work done very early in the so I stuck with it so it's

01:18 is where we're gonna meet. Um my office is in S.

01:21 Two. It's room 2 21 So the building directly outside if you

01:26 these doors that's S. R. . That's not my building.

01:29 If you go and look at the tiny ugly brown building that's over here

01:32 the left when you got the doors my building. Alright so not pretty

01:37 remodeled building, ugly little brown building needs to be torn down or redone

01:42 way um I'm on the second You go up the elevator to take

01:46 left and you just walk around halfway the hall and you'll see kind of

01:50 area where some faculty class or faculty are. That's my office so easily

01:55 lost in there. But the good is that every floor in S.

01:58 . Two is basically a circle. if you pass it you can just

02:01 going as many times you need to you finally figure out which one where

02:06 I'm at. Um if you call my number is right up there if

02:09 in my office and I can see it's your name. I don't answer

02:13 from. Unknown right because I mean get like 50 spam phone calls just

02:19 my cell phone so I'm not I'm I don't play that game anymore.

02:22 if you're hiding your identity I'm not answer the phone if I'm in my

02:26 . But if I'm not there, I'm not gonna answer it either.

02:29 if you need to get in touch me, the most easy way to

02:33 in touch with me is by email . H. Dot E.

02:36 U. Um And usually I will to email pretty quickly except now this

02:43 the big exception because we're different I keep office our business hours,

02:49 basically 8 to 5. I don't emails after five o'clock. So if

02:53 like like midnight and it's like my is not working and I can't do

02:56 homework or whatever. You're not gonna a response for me because I'm not

03:00 up there staring at my thing. fact I hate emails so much because

03:03 get about 100 and 220,250 emails a . I don't even have it on

03:07 phone because my phone would just be nonstop. So I only do it

03:12 my devices or from my laptop from computer. So basically if you have

03:17 a question you need answered. Just like I got here at 7:30 this

03:21 if my internet was up I would been responding to emails but the Internet

03:26 gone. I don't know why. crazy. All right, my office

03:29 should you want to come talk to every Tuesday and thursday right after class

03:32 you can come here listen to So I don't know what's going on

03:35 then you just just follow me up my office and I can talk to

03:38 and if you have another class right that's fine. Just email me we'll

03:41 up an appointment outside of my regular hours. This is just my guaranteed

03:45 I promise you I'm gonna be there of thing. Um And we can

03:50 at a time that's convenient to both us. Sorry, forget you have

03:55 actually go out to the advice. . Has everyone read their syllabus

03:59 Only 11 pages now. 13 pages this point when I started the university

04:03 was three pages long. But every they make me add something else from

04:06 student catalog. Really. Anything you to know is gonna be there.

04:11 I think what they're trying to do they're trying to make you think oh

04:14 I read through this this is my document that makes sure that I know

04:17 that you need to know. Trust . You're not gonna need to know

04:19 you need to know about the university my syllabus. But what it does

04:23 , it tells you what the outline the course is, what your assignments

04:26 gonna be and how you're going to graded. Those are the most important

04:30 . There's some also some points to academic honesty policy. There's some points

04:34 the incomplete withdrawal policy because those teams up an awful lot. But really

04:38 you need to know that information just into the U. H. Website

04:41 undergraduate catalog that has every policy that to you from now until the end

04:46 time. Alright. Everything. Um what I want to point out here

04:52 you know that Julius yeah, people looking like no, have you ever

04:56 software on a computer on the phone you just sit there and click the

04:59 button? Okay. And you basically your first born to somebody? Yeah

05:05 the ula it's the end user license . So that's what this is.

05:09 basically what I'm saying is that this what you're gonna find on the court

05:12 this is how you're gonna be This is how your grades are gonna

05:15 and you're agreeing to doing those All right. So even if you

05:19 read the syllabus, you're agreeing to that. That's that is part of

05:24 your job is. All right now saying all that. Here's just some

05:30 important stuff that the university wants me let you know and you've probably heard

05:34 if you've already taken classes on you've already seen all this stuff.

05:37 first off anything you ever need to is three clicks away from that you

05:40 . Dot E. D. Uh top page. Alright. So

05:43 you gotta do is if you don't where something is, just go to

05:45 page, go to the search and looking for and you'll be able to

05:49 it. Uh Some examples here. , you're important days. Do we

05:52 any seniors graduating this fall? Anyone it's all right to Alright. Do

06:03 know when your fees are for No, Guess what? Go to

06:10 calendar? Academic calendar will tell you you need to know about all the

06:14 that you still have to pay that you didn't know about? All

06:18 . It's all there. Okay. that's easy when you can just click

06:22 go there and academic calendar. But here's some two important dates,

06:26 This is the last Great to drop course. Like if you're like I

06:30 I'm not interested in this. I I'd be interested but I have no

06:32 in what he's teaching me. You still drop the course without a great

06:36 september 7th, right? We still to keep your money. And I

06:39 the closer you get to that the more money we get to

06:42 Right? So like if you drop , we don't keep any of your

06:44 . But if you drop like september we get all the money and then

06:47 throw it in a big swimming we swim in it and make fun

06:51 least that's what I think they Alright. The last day to drop

06:54 class is november 16th which is I the latest I've ever seen it.

06:58 that's where you get a w we'll with that a little bit later.

07:02 The academic honesty quality this is pages pages of legalese and garbage basically says

07:08 are your rights as a student and are our rights as an institution with

07:12 to academic honesty questions. All I'm gonna boil it down to three

07:17 things. Don't lie. Don't You don't do those things. You

07:21 stay away from those three things are be fine. Alright. But you'd

07:23 amazed that some people really go to incredible lengths to be able to

07:30 So they lie a lot and they even steal stuff to make it

07:34 Don't be that person that's bad. that will outline that policy outlines universities

07:39 are just as your rights are. for example if you're accused of cheating

07:43 as an example you can actually bring attorney into the conversation at the very

07:48 beginning. Even if it's like well thought she cheated on the test.

07:51 I didn't. You can bring in journey wow. Isn't that crazy.

07:57 a lot of money for something like anyway. Uh If you need accommodations

08:01 the class you can go to this . It used to be a lot

08:05 used to just B. C. . D. But they decided big

08:07 are much more important. So it's you H dot E. D.

08:10 . Accessibility or you can do the term for accessibility. You can figure

08:13 what accommodations are available to you, to go about getting them so on

08:17 so forth. All right. we want to make sure that you

08:21 covered and that you do have the that you need. So, if

08:25 need those things, that's where you're look. We're going to fight with

08:30 . Yes. I think we're going fight. There we go. I

08:33 know. I'm pointing there. That's computer. Alright. For those who

08:36 been here for a while, you , blackboard and how much it

08:38 Right? Okay. Blackboard sucks. all just nod and agree for those

08:42 are new. You know, you're to canvas and stuff. Blackboard

08:47 All right. But it's how the uses. It's our learning management

08:52 Alright? So everything you're gonna need the class can be found there any

08:54 I'm gonna make. I'm gonna make blackboard which email directly to you.

08:58 the announcements always posted there. Uh syllabus, any paperwork that you need

09:02 download, any power point slides that gonna need are available to you,

09:06 they don't become available until right before . About an hour before class.

09:10 links to a sandwich that you I have a link to all the

09:13 recordings. I'll talk about video recordings just a moment. Uh Anything you

09:18 is basically done through blackboard. I point out some stuff that most people

09:22 the blackboard is a great book. is not a great book. It's

09:25 place that reports grades to you. right. It is incredibly inaccurate in

09:29 of how it can calculate grades. is one of the most poorly written

09:33 of software that exists in the except for Tiktok. We'll talk

09:42 Alright. Anyway, what it will is it will do well in keeping

09:47 of what type of scores you So if you look in black

09:49 you see a score that doesn't match you know that you earn. That's

09:53 a doctor wayne air. So you contact me and say, hey,

09:57 scores don't match what I expect them score is what my scores are and

10:00 can go look it up and I'm , oh yeah, I see.

10:02 flipped you and somebody else around. right. And so that's good.

10:05 it doesn't do calculation of your Well, so you need to be

10:09 top of your grades and this is for every class. So most people

10:11 point it out to you. And I point this out because I

10:15 a lot of students who are freaking about grades because let's face that you

10:18 are planning on the health professions. go, you see, look at

10:22 . I mean, who's here taking class just for giggles like I just

10:26 like taking a tough class at 8:30 . No one. Alright. So

10:31 of you are here on purpose. right. And you understand you're kind

10:35 going into a competitive environment and so of you are sitting there going,

10:40 got to make a good grade. you're going to nursing school already have

10:43 mantra, right? You or you have it. It's like I have

10:45 get a and a as what I here. So I guess it's still

10:50 early. You have to drink your before you show up. Alright.

10:55 , this isn't going to help you out whether or not you're earning the

10:58 that you want is what I'm trying get. You have to figure that

11:01 and I'll show you how to calculate the end of this. All

11:04 So what do you need? You to have the text book. This

11:07 a digital textbook. You can purchase directly. Um There's something online

11:13 Um like bit wire or something. don't know that was new. It

11:17 on blackboard. I clicked the link it's like, oh, it looks

11:19 it comes from um the not the but the bookstores. So I think

11:23 where you can purchase your stuff but haven't played with it. I don't

11:27 about it. I don't trust anything I haven't touched. So buyer

11:31 But anyway, there's a link you go to and you can purchase it

11:35 so I think the entire cost for for this semester and I think the

11:40 semester is 100 and $15. Don't me on that. I'm not 100%

11:44 on that. But that's what we're do. And you do have a

11:47 , you have to read before class single time. If some of you

11:50 sitting there going I gotta read you're into a field where you have to

11:55 constantly maintain your knowledge. Alright when done with your degree you will still

12:01 two years have to complete a certain of continuing education credits In order to

12:07 your license. Alright. My wife's therapist. She has 25 hours.

12:13 has two or 25 credits that it's 25 hours and 25 hours. That's

12:17 piece of cake. Right? It's credit. She has to do every

12:21 years to renew her license. Phds don't have to do that.

12:26 everyone else does. So make sure well what I'm trying to do is

12:31 gonna try to teach you how to an academic mindset. So there's gonna

12:36 lots of reading in here. The is basically the homework sweet. This

12:39 a whole bunch of stuff that's just so it has a whole bunch of

12:43 aspects to it that I'm gonna be from for your homework and this is

12:46 be $80 for. I'm not sure if it's a year for the

12:50 but for our class, and I for the next one as well,

12:53 ogletree is doing it. Alright. let me just kind of go over

12:58 I think it's important for you to how I design classes. All

13:02 Um My expectation for you is to your goal right? I I want

13:10 to achieve the goal that you're setting yourself. All right. But as

13:14 , we are naturally opposed to doing . We just want the goal,

13:19 ? Have you ever noticed that? . How many of you guys?

13:23 don't have to raise your hand. it's really funny to kind of do

13:26 . How many of you guys who new said this semester is going to

13:30 different? Alright. This semester I'm change how I behave because the previous

13:38 you didn't quite reach the goal, ? My job here is to be

13:44 knowledge Sherpa to sit behind you with stick and kind of bump you on

13:49 butt to make you go towards your . I'm not here against you.

13:53 here for you. Which means sometimes gonna make you do things you don't

13:57 want to do. All right, in the end for those of

14:00 how many of you guys have been been? Or are right? Is

14:04 fun practicing and getting up early and all the hard stuff. It

14:10 it's fun. I'm looking at other , they're like, uh but is

14:13 fun to win? Yes, it's to get that trophy. And it's

14:19 work getting there, nothing worth doing gonna be easy. It's the hard

14:25 . And again, you guys are on going into a profession where you

14:29 battling. I mean, and I'm that term. It's a it's a

14:32 you're battling disease and death. You've to be ready to do the hard

14:38 when that person vomits on you and just like, well, that's just

14:41 of my day and you keep you've got to be ready for that

14:45 someone's jugular, I got to work an operating room. I got to

14:50 some pretty horrific stuff. I've had die on me and been raised back

14:54 life. It's the coolest thing All right. That's what you guys

14:59 getting into and I did it younger you guys are right now, which

15:03 crazy. All right. But so my job here is to get

15:07 into a mindset that allows you to that goal. And so my courses

15:11 designed around that. It's this idea learning is not just a one time

15:16 like we did in high school where like, okay, I study,

15:18 at my study. I studied, ready for the test. Right?

15:21 is literally doing things over and over over and over again until it becomes

15:27 that is just part of you. so what we're gonna do is we

15:30 three aspects. The classroom is just small portion of everything. So before

15:34 , what I want you to do I want you to read the

15:36 And the purpose here is to guide through a bunch of material that you

15:41 have any idea about. You may some if you've seen it before,

15:44 for the first time, it's really of your first exposure. All

15:47 It's gonna be very confusing and strange uncomfortable. But then you come to

15:51 what we're gonna in classes. We're to guide our way through it all

15:54 that we can understand it better, ? We're gonna point out what's important

15:57 let's just throw away the fluff right or what's unnecessary for you right

16:02 And then what I want you to is I want you to go after

16:05 and kind of reorganize your thoughts. did I just learn about? What

16:09 it mean? What is important and I want you to practice what's important

16:14 that's kind of how it breaks right? So, I read beforehand

16:17 come to class, listen to a , ask questions when I'm confused and

16:21 what I'm gonna do is after I'm gonna start doing these homework assignments

16:25 reinforce exactly what it is I just and that's how it boils down

16:33 how much time it takes is dependent how comfortable you are with the

16:38 If you're easy, it's like I can get through it quick,

16:41 ? But if it's like okay, struggling with this. Gonna take a

16:43 bit longer. So this is an of the type of assignment you're gonna

16:48 . Alright, so top hat is textbook. And so the stuff that

16:52 gonna do in the textbook is Now I'm gonna be the first person

16:55 tell you I hate grades. I them. I think I don't like

16:59 . But let's face it, if didn't have to read, would you

17:02 the textbook? No, I'll tell I wouldn't read the text book if

17:07 didn't have to. I've I went how many years of school, you

17:13 ? And I can tell you, can think of my first year where

17:15 bought my $300 biology textbook and it's sat there and just collected dusk on

17:20 desk. You know, then you back and sell it for $50 who

17:24 money back. Yeah, we don't that. All right. We're gonna

17:27 gonna use it. All right. the first part is there's gonna be

17:30 assignments and the carrot part is that learning something? The stick part is

17:35 there are points assigned to it. right? So as you read along

17:39 the middle of the text will be question that pops up and says,

17:41 , did you just learn this? the answer to this question? These

17:44 easy questions if you read the text there, right there for you.

17:48 right. So that's kind of the one. The reading opens up right

17:52 the class. So like today we have a reading assignment, right?

17:55 at 10 o'clock is the end of class. So it's going to open

17:57 and it will close normally at 8 before the next class. So you

18:03 have plenty of time to read through material for the next class. That

18:07 sense. It really shouldn't take you than an hour to read everything.

18:11 right. That's the first part. then after class after our lecture,

18:16 I'm gonna do is I'm gonna give questions for you to ask yourself to

18:21 whether or not you learn material. isn't the practice part. This is

18:24 making sure that I know what I'm trying to learn. See the question

18:27 need to ask yourself after every class really, really simple. What did

18:30 learn? Right? And if you answer that question, you learned

18:35 you at least have an idea of , which way you're going. Have

18:38 ever walked out of class? And don't know what the hell that was

18:41 . Yeah, Yeah. That's one two problems you stop paying attention or

18:47 . And this is likely Professor didn't an agenda. He he or she

18:51 in there and just started vomiting words you right after every class, you

18:55 be able to walk out of it say today I learned and break is

19:00 it is. Alright. Usually the I start class and I'll tell you

19:03 you're going to learn and then I'll you what you're gonna learn. And

19:06 at the class you should be able say did I learn that stuff?

19:10 questions here which are part of your hat assignments are going to help you

19:17 yourself around what we call those learning . Alright. There's usually about seven

19:23 eight different learning objectives for each And they're really identifiable once you start

19:27 what you're looking for. All But this is gonna help you focus

19:31 the primary concepts Then you have to homework. All right. Now,

19:36 connect homework is the practice part. right. And so, these are

19:40 to open up at 10:00 after class then they close at midnight the day

19:47 class. So notice the timing Alright, I'm gonna try this

19:50 This is 10 till the next Right? So, the end of

19:53 to the next class. The assignment . So slow. The Simon here

20:01 about 37 hours. Alright. And I'm trying to do is trying to

20:05 you to practice over a certain period time to get that done. Now

20:09 gonna point out for all these assignments these and these right here um There

20:18 there extended for the first three classes because I know we're gonna get ads

20:22 I don't want people coming and I missed the first two assignments and

20:25 going and clicking buttons. It's a in the butt. Alright. So

20:29 get in the bad habit just because have extended deadlines now, don't just

20:34 them and go, oh well this how it's always gonna be because it's

20:36 bite you in the butt. I have pointed out that these lectures reviews

20:41 have until the exam to complete because idea here is I'm trying to figure

20:45 what it is I'm learning and how do it. You're not gonna need

20:48 midnight. But I just figured that's best way to help you study.

20:54 . So the connect homework is designed of wonky in other words, how

21:01 did this. So sometimes homework is appear as one assignment and they're all

21:06 100 points no matter which one you at. Or there might be multiple

21:09 just because they're drawn from different sources these aren't the actual points. I

21:14 want to kind of give you an but when I do that I'll just

21:17 you like an A A. It might be an A. And

21:19 . It might be an A. . And C. All right.

21:21 you can see like if that was sea there might be like four questions

21:24 . It's not like it's they're not equal length there. If they have

21:29 points value, they are of differing . Alright. And just so you

21:34 get a sense of what these kind look like. There we go.

21:38 have one type like this that's gonna you can see it says adaptive

21:43 These are designed kind of like The idea behind this type of assignment

21:50 that you're basically asked a question and says, hey do you know this

21:54 mean how do you how comfortable are with answering this question, do you

21:57 you know the answer? And if you you answer it and then it

22:00 you a question and you respond. then what happens is if you're missing

22:04 that you think you know or if missing questions that you don't know,

22:07 gonna keep shuffling in questions around that topic at you over and over again

22:14 you're gonna keep getting those assignments and won't say you're done with it until

22:19 demonstrate mastery. All right. So other words it looks for your weakness

22:24 helps you fix your weakness. I these types of assignments but they're not

22:29 strong as they could be. But is it is in in terms of

22:33 tool it's one of the best that have these the A. P.

22:36 . Those are anatomy models and Again they're not very big. We're

22:40 going to the big anatomy that you're do. The hands on stuff is

22:44 to be in the lab. If in the lab, if you're not

22:45 the lab, don't worry about But this is to expose you to

22:48 . It's a digital exposure to So you're not always gonna have them

22:53 some lectures our physiology based. Some them are just anatomy based. So

22:57 upon the lecture, you'll see, might see those. And then this

23:01 where just as kind of like this is more what you're familiar

23:05 It's like here's a question, here's answer type thing. All right.

23:09 you're gonna see these three different types the homework. Now. The other

23:16 that's part of your homework grade is orientation quiz. All right. And

23:19 basically I know I am or Trust me, we're gonna go the

23:22 class today. Alright. You're gonna sitting there going shut up.

23:27 You can say that in your Don't say that loud, right?

23:32 The orientation was basically just says did listen to what I said and do

23:35 understand what you're supposed to do for class. So it's all the homeworks

23:39 matter when you have them you can them all 200% before the deadline.

23:42 if you go through and you get a 60 the first time through,

23:45 back reopen it and you can just 40% that you missed. It allows

23:49 to go back and make corrections. . Why is that? Why do

23:53 do it that way? Why do think it's because I want you to

23:57 ? It's not about the grade. . So that's the carrot part.

24:01 know, it just bumps up your field. I'll get hundreds on the

24:04 , right? But the purpose here I want you to learn the

24:09 That's the most important part. Learning material. It's not the grade.

24:12 the material. If you focus on the material, the grade naturally

24:15 Okay? So if you go through first time you're like man, I

24:18 get it. That's okay. Keep it. The test is the

24:23 The homework should never be the test that makes sense. Alright. So

24:28 is just practice. And so the thing if you go through this and

24:31 like miss, I don't know, say six of them. You're like

24:35 right, I'll go back and redo and you got until September 2 to

24:38 it done. I would make sure get it done early because you blow

24:42 off, you're gonna forget and then just another grade that gets knocked

24:47 All right, when we get to the day before the exam or really

24:51 right after the last lecture, you'll these things called pre exam review

24:56 These are just more questions because let's it, when we want to practice

24:59 learn stuff, we want more practice . That's what they are. They

25:02 count for anything. They don't they're extra credit. They're there for your

25:06 . So when you see the exam questions, they are not to be

25:11 with the lecture questions even though they're top hat. Alright. Test is

25:19 gonna be multiple choice, but all types of questions you're gonna be because

25:22 the different publishers think these are different better ways to you learn. They're

25:27 be different types. So, this opens up right after the last day

25:31 class and will close on the exam late. So depending on when you

25:35 your exam stuff, you guys care Wednesday exams, exams suck. They

25:43 right? I mean, everyone looking to an exam. No, because

25:47 means you're gonna judge me, No, that's exactly good, good

25:52 . Exams are not a judgment of . They're not a judgment of who

25:57 are or your ability to be what wanna be. Alright. Do not

26:04 an exam for what it is. exam simply tests you to see whether

26:08 not you learn the information that was in the class. Once you wrap

26:13 mind around that part of your anxiety go away. But we've been trained

26:20 12 years tests our judgment of character whether I'm smart or not. Now

26:29 just ask the question. Did you what I asked? You learn?

26:31 right. So where are they? a month? This just happens out

26:36 six lectures. So the 15th of october 11th november 3rd and then the

26:41 day of class december 1st, all tests are one hour long. They're

26:45 questions multiple choice. That's standard for industry. If you're planning on staying

26:49 this field, every exam you'll take now until the end of time will

26:53 that at that pace. No matter I mean, they give you 100

26:57 , then it will be two They give you 75 question will be

27:00 hour and a half. All So, it's basically that's the pace

27:03 which this field works at. When take your your licensing exams, same

27:10 . It's just that's just the way do stuff. All right. All

27:13 exams are going to be administered at . Go ahead and say boo because

27:17 sucks for those of you who are CASA is the testing center. It

27:21 nothing like this because that's just a picture I took off the internet.

27:24 in essence, that's kind of what like. It's basically a whole bunch

27:27 computers and when you go in, show your I. D. You

27:30 your biometric. They still do the , right? And you do the

27:34 . They tell you where you you log in and then a whole

27:37 of thr wandering around behind you making feel uncomfortable. The rooms are cold

27:41 you got the flickering lights that are making you feel really, really

27:45 And if you're caught with your phone anything else, they turn off the

27:48 , they send you out and they the academic, you know, it's

27:51 a wonderful thing, right? We look forward to casa No.

27:56 Yeah, it's just easy for for . But basically what it is is

28:01 where we're gonna take our test. we have exam days. So those

28:04 you don't come here if you you'll be very lonely and it's very

28:08 in the morning. So now you to decide what time you're going to

28:11 the exam within limits, right? there's only a certain number of

28:15 So what you need to do, you've never uh if you're new to

28:19 university, you need to go to website and register that up and at

28:22 point before the exam, go and your biometric, um you don't want

28:25 do that on the first day of . So this would be a good

28:27 to do it. If you have better to go get lunch, go

28:30 your biometric taken care of and you'll done. All right now all my

28:35 are non cumulative now, some of going, hey, but this is

28:39 science is cumulative in its nature. like taking a calculus exam. Can

28:42 do calculus if you've never done algebra ? Alright. So there is an

28:48 of of a cumulative nature in all courses. But I'm not gonna sit

28:54 and go, oh this is exam . I'm gonna ask you a question

28:57 the unit one. Right? I'm presuming you learned information. So if

29:01 shows up that's dependent upon that that could happen. I don't drop tests

29:06 . So take each test seriously You got four of them. So

29:11 their weight isn't that great because that's of your grades. That means each

29:14 is only 20% of your grade, ? So each test can't ruin you

29:20 doing poorly on three tests. Well your average, right? That kind

29:27 makes sense. And I'm kind of here. It's been a year or

29:32 semester I should say. Alright so do you get your information again?

29:36 . So if you go to the info thing, you can see there's

29:39 top hat where you can roll top , there's where you can register,

29:43 can register, connect. Uh There's bright wear again. I don't know

29:49 that is. If you click it purchase something through it. Great.

29:53 I said I'm not going to touch like that. I didn't put it

29:56 there, it just arrived. Um you go through the content, you'll

29:59 a folder that's called lecture slides. one for each unit. Each unit

30:04 up as each unit opens up. you want to use that as a

30:07 to go to top hat right there the content. That's an easy way

30:10 do it as well. And all connect assignments are there? Or again

30:13 can just hit the connect button. will take you to your page.

30:17 easy access to all the stuff through . This is what your week kind

30:21 looks like for my class. All . Just to give you a sense

30:25 how you kind of organize yourself. the blue represents reading green represents the

30:30 homework and the orange stuff represents what lecture reviews are after each lecture.

30:37 you can see I'm gonna read from after class until the next lecture I

30:42 that. That's how long that's All right, so, thursday

30:47 you get a really really long reading . Five days right between Tuesday and

30:52 you have a shorter reading time and just a matter of managing your

30:56 But I don't expect you guys to working on Saturdays and Sundays, it

30:59 happens that way. Alright. Uh terms of the homework, you have

31:03 hours. So right after class, midnight on Wednesday, right after

31:07 midnight on Friday. Um In terms the reviews you're reviewing for an

31:14 So those are gonna remain open until exam the night before the exam at

31:20 . In other words, I want to organize your thoughts and your ideas

31:23 before you get there. But I'm you freedom to be able to do

31:26 because I know my class is not only class you're taking in.

31:29 Maybe you're only taking this class. don't know right? And I'll be

31:33 first one to take. My class not the most important class you'll ever

31:36 . I promise you that right? are plenty of other classes that are

31:39 important than mine. All right. If you want a round black

31:47 you'll find these folders. These are fun stuff. There's one here thing

31:50 we talk about the cell that's a that kind of goes with it.

31:53 it's just an easy link. And are just kind of videos I found

31:57 time people sent me and I was like, oh these are good and

31:59 just, if you want to look them great if not, no big

32:02 . So don't freak out about This is the calculus. I used

32:08 figure out your grade. Yeah. you have to download the slide

32:18 No, I'm I don't know what is. It's just a picture Not

32:24 . Alright, it's a top hat 10% of your grade. How do

32:28 figure it out? Calculate the total of points. Which what top hat

32:31 you the total number of points you versus total total number of points that

32:35 can earn. All right. And use that. And that's 10% of

32:39 grade. All right. So let's you earned 97% of points. That's

32:44 points towards your final grade, Connect , same sort of thing. You

32:48 take all the points plus your connect , average it out. And that

32:54 you your final grade because those assignments be broken down. You can just

32:57 in terms of like, Oh um got 100 on this one. I

33:01 four, I got 100 points or points here and Blah Blah Blah and

33:04 figure out again total number of points versus total number of points I could

33:08 . That's another way you could look it. The exam each of them

33:11 just 100 points each. So there's of them. So that's 80%.

33:15 10 plus 10 plus 80 100. . And hard. Just there's a

33:22 of numbers up there. So this what the math kind of looks like

33:25 you want to do is the average the exams, average of your top

33:27 of your connect question everyone always Is there a curve. This is

33:31 science course. What do you Of course. Welcome to Science always

33:37 . Alright, I'm just gonna tell now, so you don't freak

33:40 I shoot for an average on every . Around 65 right now. Your

33:45 is going back to high school where like a 65 to failing grade.

33:48 , no, no no, not science science we decide what a failing

33:53 is based on curve. Now the is I do have a failing

33:57 Failing grade in my class is a top. You can write that down

34:01 it. So, I've got to above a 15 path. Alright.

34:04 basically saying if you can cross the once every two times, you're in

34:08 shape. All right. And part that is because I don't want to

34:12 a whole bunch of high grades up and I don't know how smart you

34:15 are. I'm trying to figure out the end of your knowledge is.

34:19 right. So I'm gonna leave room at that top end to make sure

34:25 I can find where our very, best students are. Okay, So

34:31 on exams is around 65 and it's done historically. And if you go

34:36 at the Syllabus, I'll even have kind of a historical like like chart

34:41 what grates? Kind of look like the class. You can go and

34:43 that up. Alright, so normally is a curve. I've never not

34:46 a curve. This is a promise make to everybody at the beginning of

34:51 semester if the course, if everybody the course gets an A. We're

34:56 a kegger. What is that? a party with big things of

35:06 Now some of you are under age you've got to figure it out on

35:10 own. I've never thrown the I'm just saying I'm waiting for the

35:15 . Are you guys gonna be the ? That didn't sound like a lot

35:19 confidence? I got one person. . Alright. I want you

35:26 I am not here to be in way to reach your goals. I

35:31 not a gatekeeper, I'm here to you achieve your goals. Alright,

35:37 that means you're gonna have to I want everyone to get an

35:40 I really do. I think this is fun, I think the material

35:44 it is interesting and it helps you the stuff that you want to go

35:47 into in the first place when I teaching, you're gonna see this like

35:50 gets giddy about this stuff. I do. It's fun stuff,

35:54 ? I want you to be excited it too. Alright. If you're

35:57 about the material, you're gonna be to learn it more, you're gonna

36:00 work harder for it and when you for stuff you can achieve those

36:04 let's have the kegger. I'm I'm ready for it and this is

36:08 , it's been a crappy couple of . We deserve it. Don't you

36:12 so? Let's all Ernie's alright. is extra credit the class. Um

36:16 basically there's gonna be one before each and one after each exam. It's

36:20 a self assessment to see have you for the exam and after you get

36:24 exam scores back, what did I ? Right, what did I do

36:27 type thing? All right. And really easy to do and I never

36:31 at your answers. It's for your assessment because one of the things you

36:34 to be doing is always self assessing you're not asking the questions, why

36:38 this, why did this outcome occur why? What am I shooting

36:42 You're gonna miss the target, You know what you're aiming for?

36:47 gonna miss? All right, so is extra credit this, you can

36:51 it into your calculations if you want but I always apply extra credit at

36:55 end of the semester. And what doing here is I figure out what

36:58 great is established the curve and then add the extra credit on top of

37:02 and then that shifts you on that , right? In other words,

37:07 curve doesn't move you move on the , which is a good thing.

37:11 not like all the other classes where go, it's part of your grade

37:15 which if they do that, your credit now is required because it's part

37:19 your grade, right? That's You don't feel like doing it.

37:24 on you. I would do All right. So, that's the

37:31 part of the class that took What? 40 minutes there that gives

37:34 about 40 minutes to talk about. know it was like 40 minutes.

37:37 you believe? I was just Alright. Are there questions about anything

37:41 I just talked about? We're not do lecture stuff today, but I

37:45 going to talk about one other thing think is very very well.

37:59 Okay. So there it is. , so this one right here,

38:03 lecture review questions. Alright, So you go into top hat, you'll

38:06 see as assignments come open. right after class, what will happen

38:10 is those these questions will open up top hat. So you're gonna have

38:14 kind of manage your time between connecting hat. Right? It's like

38:17 after every class something's opening up after . All right. But it's these

38:21 questions that open up on top hat are gonna stay open until the

38:26 And they're real simple. They're like they're gonna ask you questions, Did

38:31 learn, what did you learn about right there? They're really kind of

38:34 ended. Draw me a picture of , you know? And the idea

38:39 is these are learning objectives, broader that you need to understand.

38:44 for example, if we're giving a on the skin, The epidermis or

38:48 on the integra Mint, Which is be a lecture that's coming in the

38:52 unit. We're gonna learn something. gonna learn about the skin. We're

38:54 learn about hair. We're gonna learn nails. We're gonna learn about

38:57 So, right there, just showing those are for learning objectives,

39:03 Because we're gonna learn about skin. so, I might ask you questions

39:07 , alright, what are what are two layers of skin and what makes

39:11 distinct from each other? So notice kind of an open ended thing.

39:13 so now you got to kind of how do I organize information in my

39:17 so that I can distinguish between epidermis uh and and the dermis and the

39:24 for that matter. Right. What all have different names? So,

39:27 must be different for some reason. so, that's what those type of

39:32 do. They're not like a multiple or anything. They're really kind of

39:35 make you kind of think about the so that you start learning it.

39:40 why I give you more time to them the other ones. These are

39:44 of the shorter questions easy to you know, and that's why they're

39:50 only 37 hours after class. Because I don't want you guys All

39:56 . How many guys? Procrastinators one . I'm a procrastinator right. We're

40:01 procrastinators. Great. All right. is a support group for procrastinators for

40:06 rest of y'all? Well, just patient with this. All right.

40:13 we wait till the last minute, not gonna do Well, I'm just

40:17 tell you that right now. If wait till last minute, there's too

40:19 information for you to be able to it in order to do.

40:23 that's why I kind of create that . Alright. So that was the

40:27 question. What else? Yes. right. There. And then

40:29 Yeah, that's a good question. mean, so connect is it's kind

40:40 like top hat Top hat two has layers. So I don't know if

40:44 does So top hat has the you access to your materials and then Top

40:47 outside This is the material you're Right? And so I don't know

40:51 connect does that as well. If like, okay, I now have

40:54 to connect, but I need to access to the material specific for the

40:58 . So see if you for more . If it asks you for more

41:03 , then probably yes, but here's truth. Call them up. I

41:08 , they have they have hundreds of standing by uh to answer that kind

41:14 questions. Like, look, I've it for this class and it's this

41:17 and my other classes asking for What do I need do I

41:20 What do I need to purchase and not gonna try to take money from

41:23 ? I mean they are but not a bad way. Yeah.

41:35 So I don't know where they're going test this this year. So casa

41:39 multiple places on campus. There's one in Garrison Jim that's over here by

41:44 on the other side of the basketball where um uh kinesiology, their

41:50 It's up on the second floor, one over there, there's one over

41:52 . C. B. B. is the classroom and business building which

41:55 on the other side of campus. one over here in Agnes Arnold.

41:59 typically what they do is they put either over in Garrison or they put

42:02 in CBB and again, if I'm like like you know, strange language

42:08 . I apologize right? I mean time this this is just kind of

42:13 it is. You learn all the but really what they basically want you

42:16 do is they want you to go and get your biometric on file.

42:21 , that doesn't mean they're actually getting thumbprint. They're just putting your thumb

42:24 and create some sort of digital image the next time you do show up

42:28 digital image is gonna be the same that's and that's all it is.

42:32 you know, you log in, create the account and then once you

42:35 that account it's good for the rest your time while you're here at the

42:38 . Right? So if you're taking class, you're gonna do, if

42:40 take a math class. Chemistry, gonna make you take exams over

42:46 So that's how you do that. . Anyone else? Okay. And

42:51 there it should be. There already not. Did you look in the

43:00 documents? Mhm. I know I it. Maybe I have it hidden

43:09 . I'll take I'll take a look here at the end of class.

43:12 . Stupid. It might actually have wrong data. That's the other

43:21 Could have the wrong date on There's all sorts of issues that could

43:24 there. All right. But I'll make sure that it's there.

43:28 promise you I did it. I last week I had everything done and

43:32 like on Wednesday I get this email like, oh, can you add

43:35 language to your syllabus? And I'm , are you kidding? I've already

43:38 everything blah blah blah. So I double check anything else other than my

43:42 . Yeah. Mhm. Say The link for the book. Let

43:50 see if I have it still up . It's it's basically if you go

43:57 Oh gosh leak Should know the organization my slides. I don't. There

44:05 go. So for the book, you go under content, you should

44:10 that button right there. Okay for first time for purchasing. You can

44:17 that or you can use that I wouldn't even be able to check

44:26 morning either. Alright, are we other questions? Yes. No,

44:35 should be one thing called um actually you click click this link right

44:40 that will take you to exactly where need. Okay that that 11 thing

44:46 what it is. It's this product here. It's called the A and

44:53 . Digital suite. That is their name for the thing and it's multiple

44:59 under that one umbrella. So typically you buy something from from McGraw Hill

45:05 what we'll do, they'll have like textbook and this and this and this

45:08 that kind of bundle it together and that's the bundle it will have a

45:13 uh learn smart. It'll have They'll have fills with it. Yes

45:22 . Uh huh. Gotcha. There go. Okay, so if you

45:45 hear that, basically what you're saying that each each basically I'm gonna get

45:49 if you buy connect, you're gonna connect and which is separate from the

45:54 but we don't have the textbook associated our connect. So you don't have

45:57 worry about that is really kind of gist of it. Right? But

46:03 classes do have both of them attached it. There you go. Thank

46:11 . Alright. Anything else? I'm around the room looking for those

46:15 Never be afraid to raise them. no it's top hat is our connect

46:23 our textbook. So this right here top hat this right here is

46:29 Okay. And again it's those two . No very very confusing but have

46:38 for products. Anyone else. All . I got to back here.

46:43 so you're getting smaller and smaller the back you go okay there and then

46:47 okay. Oh that's a good Thank you very much. Alright.

46:57 about when we sign up for signing up for exams is a lot

47:00 signing up for your seat on Southwest . Some of you understand what I'm

47:07 about two weeks before the exam on at midnight. So if your exam

47:14 know imagine your exam is on a . So at midnight on monday when

47:18 turns to a Tuesday, two weeks your exam is when you are able

47:23 sign up for your time slots for exam. Alright. And so what

47:29 is is all of you are staying that late with your fingers over a

47:33 , right? Desperately trying to get time slot you're gonna be like and

47:38 all gonna try to get that five slot right? Because that's how you

47:43 think that I I know it's every you're you're smart right? You know

47:47 . Yeah, I know you know though right? What time you want

47:50 get the test early? Why? you take your test? You get

47:54 done and go out and party I'm done. Yeah. No,

48:00 do that. Okay, do All right. Making sure. I

48:04 , I want to be on the page here. Alright. So that's

48:06 it works. Always two weeks before exam is when you're able to sign

48:10 for the exam. Alright. And your time slot is unavailable, you

48:14 do the best you can and find slot that works best for you.

48:18 ? There's enough slots for everybody. may not be the slide that you

48:25 . And I saw another one. , like that was the question

48:31 The silva should be there right but we'll figure out as soon as

48:34 have internet access and we're done with class. I will double check

48:38 Yes, ma'am. Okay. Never . All right. Yes. You're

48:48 have to speak up. No, shouldn't even show you. See this

48:55 the issue. I don't know what's on. Maybe I maybe I put

48:58 wrong date down, but it should unit one. Unit one will be

49:01 first one you should see. No, We're Not Even Gonna Be

49:08 Chapter 22. That's very weird. better. I'm gonna have to double

49:13 because chapter 22 is what you'd see A&P. two. Hmm,

49:20 Okay, good news is it'll all resolved shortly. All right. This

49:28 how I feel right now. All . Come on. Stupid thing.

49:33 we go. All right. Any questions you guys want to learn how

49:40 be successful in the class. because I do this like jerry time

49:46 a lot of people just sit there they stare at me like I'm

49:48 I don't know. No, They might I don't know. They

49:54 have copied me. Alright. Just at the time to make sure how

50:00 time I have because I'm just gonna you right now, 75 to 80%

50:05 the time I spent my office hours on how to study Dr Wayne.

50:08 Wayne. I've always been an A . I don't understand why am I

50:12 a senior course? All right, me how you study for the

50:16 I can almost tell you exactly how of you study because it's always the

50:20 thing because, let's face it, was the last time someone taught you

50:25 to study last semester? Yeah, because Dr Gifford listens to me and

50:35 doing what I've told her. The is your entire academic cement your entire

50:40 career. No one has ever sat down and said the proper way to

50:43 . Is this right? What's Is is over the course of your

50:48 academic careers? You've kind of blinded way or kind of felt your way

50:53 to to success. Alright. And good news is high school for those

50:58 are coming out of high school is have enough exams and enough ways to

51:04 kind of, I'm not gonna say your way forward basically, but being

51:08 to find your way so that you be successful Alright college, you don't

51:13 that opportunity, some classes, you three exams and so by the time

51:16 figure out what's going on, by third exam, you're like, I'm

51:19 screwed. I just hopefully get the that and then that's when you kind

51:23 make that quote like this semester, gonna be different, right? And

51:27 try a method that you know worked the last class, but it didn't

51:30 in this class, Right? And reason is, is because no one

51:34 you specifically and said in order for to learn and understand material, there

51:39 a right way and there is a way to do it and I'm gonna

51:42 you the right way and I'm gonna out the wrong way, which is

51:44 90% of you do all right? , you can choose whether to listen

51:49 me, the person who likes school much, he stayed in it,

51:55 ? Or you can trust that you'll it right this time. Okay?

52:03 that's what this last part of this is and the reason I do this

52:06 most of students I see, come ask this question and I want to

52:10 us both time now so that you be successful from the start rather than

52:15 after the first exam going, I know what happened and we sit down

52:18 we talk about this again and they're , oh, I'll try that.

52:20 then you come back after the second , it's like, wow, it

52:23 . And I said, I told we could have done this without

52:26 Right. All right. First What you need to be is a

52:31 management. Now, if you're looking this, I want you to focus

52:34 the grass for a second. What graphs are the ending house forgetting

52:38 Alright, that's actually what they're Guy back in the 1800s, figured

52:42 how long it took before you start stuff right now these aren't actual

52:48 These are just examples of it, ? And basically what you can do

52:51 you look at this top thing and say we give you a number,

52:54 10 digit number which is about the that you can remember at any given

52:59 are weird and remember more, but of us are 10 digits about the

53:03 we can do. If I give a 10 digit number after about 20

53:06 , you'll remember about 60% of those in the right order After about an

53:13 , 44%. And you can see time goes by, you forget more

53:18 more and more. So about 30 later in this particular example, it

53:23 be about 20% remembering what those numbers . All right now let's think of

53:29 exam. An exam I give you , not just one piece of

53:34 I give you a lot of information roughly about a month later you are

53:39 asked to recall that information. So much of that information are you gonna

53:45 using that curve? After a About 20%. So that means the

53:50 before an exam you're now having to teach 80% of the material. Now

53:59 think about that for a moment. spent an hour and a half for

54:04 classes plus all the homework, plus the reading and all the other

54:08 And then you go and you now to teach it all over again.

54:12 , no, no that doesn't All right. We don't want to

54:15 that. What we wanna do is want to interrupt this curve before you

54:20 . And that's what the bottom graph you. It says, look,

54:23 I do just in time teaching self I will I'll bring myself back

54:49 I have less work to do, likes less work? I love less

54:58 . So what we're gonna do is gonna front in for the most part

55:02 we're doing instead of back ending All right now remember we're all lazy

55:07 . Do I want to front end ? Do I want to do my

55:10 early or do I want to wait the last minute? Procrastinators? What's

55:14 answer? Last minute? Alright. the first line up there? Never

55:21 until the last minute. Why? I'm gonna forget everything and I have

55:23 teach myself everything. Which makes studying means my life sucks, means I'm

55:27 gonna do it. I'm gonna just by and now I'm back where I

55:31 at the beginning of the semester before made the choice for the last semester

55:35 I was like well this is good , hopefully I'll pass. Alright,

55:38 I'm gonna do is I'm gonna interrupt regular intervals so you can see here

55:42 example every day I'm going to spend little bit of time to interrupt that

55:46 . So back when I get over to the exam, I only have

55:49 remind myself of the stuff that I've forgotten. All right, so You're

55:54 to time manage means you're gonna set aside every day to do something.

55:59 . What I would recommend is after when all that information is fresh.

56:05 you have a free moment, if have no class at 10:00 is go

56:09 a nice quiet spot and sit down and review and re copy your

56:14 Why? That's all familiar. It's fresh. All the words mean something

56:19 you. They haven't gone in one and out the other yet. All

56:23 now the thing is is when you're , you don't want to over

56:27 You don't want to understudy, which a really hard thing to imagine.

56:30 ? Have you ever understudied? That's easy part. Right? It's like

56:32 didn't know it. But have you over studied where you just sat there

56:35 spent tons and tons and tons of you go in the test. It's

56:39 like I could have done something So what you gotta do is you

56:42 find that sweet spot in between and do you do that? Well you

56:46 to know what you're trying to Remember what I said before each class

56:50 gonna say this is what you need learn. And then after class you

56:53 to say this is what I So now you have a target.

56:56 so it means if I know what target is. If I know what

56:59 is. I'm trying to understand and to learn. I know how much

57:02 need to study to get it because don't need to study extra stuff because

57:06 is all I got to do. don't need to understudy because I know

57:09 I'm shooting for, it's like if don't know what your study if you

57:12 know what you're trying to learn. sitting there just shooting off and trying

57:16 figure out. Hopefully, maybe something studying here will land and maybe it's

57:20 to be important. So, we're to avoid that now. How do

57:26 figure this stuff out now? Remember I said? Is that a lecture

57:30 a series of of learning objectives? gave you an example of the

57:35 right? Or really? The Integra , we have skin, we have

57:38 , we have hair. We have . So you can think of as

57:42 . Now, I'm not gonna have slide on the skin. I can

57:45 you that because our I told you skin has three parts. Has the

57:49 , the dermis and the hypodermic. the epidermis has multiple parts. The

57:53 has multiple parts and the hypodermic has parts. So, there's information that

57:57 of these things that contain within them make them unique from the other

58:01 And so the idea here is All right. So, I'm being

58:05 time manager. Plus, I'm being organizer Now. What most students do

58:09 they'll take all the slides I have class, which will be about 200

58:13 each unit, roughly, maybe Right? And what they'll do is

58:17 take those slides and they'll start flipping them. Does it sound like

58:20 you know? No, just one is gonna do. Yes. I

58:25 , most of you were just okay, maybe you won't you'll kind

58:28 re through them that way and then you'll do is you'll hide them from

58:32 and you just kind of flip through . It's like, is that what

58:35 remember? Oh no, no, not what it was. But maybe

58:37 remember it next time. No, not how it works. What you

58:41 do to help you do that interruption to create your own notes right after

58:46 . All right. You've been sitting scribbling notes on your slides, typing

58:49 and stuff. What I want you do is take a blank piece of

58:52 and just kind of walk through and the information in words that you use

58:56 help you understand what it is that trying to learn. So, if

58:59 trying to learn the integral and again go, okay, well, I've

59:01 the skin. I got the Got the glands. I got the

59:04 . All right. What did I about the skin? Well, it

59:06 three parts of the epidermis. The . It has the um hypodermic.

59:10 , what does the epidermis? Epidermis five layers. What does the dermis

59:13 ? It has two layers. What found in these five layers which are

59:16 in these two layers. Gotta yada yada yada. Please don't try to

59:20 that stuff right now. All So what we're doing is we're identifying

59:24 topics? Those learning objectives? We're this sub topics. In that case

59:28 would be like epidermis, dermis, on. And then what you do

59:30 you find the details and you only the details that are significant. Understanding

59:35 whole topic, right? Very what we do is we go down

59:39 rabbit trails that are insignificant, like numbers. You know, I'll tell

59:45 what the number is important and I guarantee you right now, it's never

59:50 in this class. I've never asked is this number? Right? Even

59:55 my upper level classroom, like you know that the body's osmolarity is 300

59:59 Oz moles. But I'm never gonna that question on the test because that's

60:03 a frame of reference because it's not 300 million Oz mold. It depends

60:06 how much water you've been drinking and much you sweat it out of your

60:10 . Alright? And if those words mean anything to you, that's okay

60:13 we don't need to do it. right, So that's kind of how

60:18 gonna we're gonna organize our notes now and P. Is two questions.

60:22 if you ever get lost and you're , I don't know what I learned

60:24 . Ask the question. What was anatomy and what was the physiology?

60:28 were the structures that I had to and what do they do? That's

60:34 easy thing, Right? I mean you ever get lost, just start

60:38 . What were the structure that learned ? Well today I learned about the

60:42 . So what are the structures? yeah, there was skin and there

60:44 yeah hair and those hard nails and oh yeah. The things that I

60:49 out of glance see well what do do, What's the gland do?

60:55 you start with the easy and you down to the hard details, that's

61:01 . Alright, so I'm gonna do when right after class. Now,

61:08 I said, lectures are a series learning objectives. We're gonna identify

61:12 We're going to see the differences. the descriptive, those are the facts

61:15 make things unique. And then what gonna do is see those questions that

61:20 gave you. So remember I said top hat, I'm giving you these

61:23 two questions. I'm not making you out what the learning objectives are.

61:27 basically pointing them to at you because is the freshman level class and saying

61:31 are the learning objectives. If you this idea, you need to go

61:35 and learn this idea. All so you're gonna learn how to identify

61:42 is important now. Really the truth if you look at a lecture and

61:45 take that big view. When we back a slide, If you go

61:50 to this, you'll see, oh have a topic and a bunch of

61:54 are associated with and then I switched a new topic and then I start

61:59 and then there's a new topic, learning objectives. It doesn't matter what

62:03 you're in. If you're in a class, if you're in a language

62:06 , every time you switch topics, learned moved to a different learning objective

62:12 of a sudden now you're gonna start at your class is a little bit

62:16 . It's not just gonna be someone there yammering along until the time runs

62:21 . And let's face it, how of you guys are looking at your

62:23 right now? There's a couple of . I know. All right,

62:31 Doctor Wayne, I don't know what write down. I'm scared of writing

62:33 much. I'm scared of writing to Right, okay, well look,

62:37 rewrite everything on the slide. Take step back and kind of look at

62:40 information. Try to figure out those . Right. Right. The important

62:45 that explains what you're learning, What information is helping you understand that

62:52 ? I have ever done this to textbook. If you need a coloring

62:56 , there are anatomy coloring books, that's not what we do. We're

62:59 using a highlighter and granted ours are now, but it's not a highlighter

63:03 not there to show you what you've . It's to pull out information.

63:08 this is something you should focus Right? We're trying to convince the

63:13 down so that it's easier to All right. We don't want to

63:18 everything verbatim. Alright. Use your words to help you understand stuff.

63:24 it's gonna cause you to use words you see there. But nine times

63:28 of 10 if you're explaining things to or explaining things to other, it's

63:32 give you a better understanding of what is that you're actually looking at.

63:36 right. So think of examples like example, if you're learning about the

63:41 being using examples of like the highway and how blood vessels travel to and

63:47 places might make sense. Right? kind of think of examples,

63:52 is this like this? And it you kind of understand stuff and lastly

63:56 abbreviations and pictures, you know, notes and writing notes shouldn't be something

64:00 takes up all of your time. . How many of you guys have

64:04 written like a grocery list? Did you use full sentences?

64:11 Because you didn't need them? you're not gonna sit there. I

64:15 a block of cheese comma cheddar. ? You know what what if you

64:21 down cheese, you know what cheese to you right? Unless you have

64:25 fancy that you've never cooked before, which case you're going to annotate your

64:29 in such a way that it makes that specific unique thing that you're doing

64:33 that's kind of what note taking right? It's pre presenting something to

64:38 jog your memory because it's already worked way in. So help jog that

64:44 , abbreviations are your friends now. picture right here. I really like

64:49 and it's not an example of something what this is to me. I

64:53 other than how fancy and and and clean the art is, right?

64:58 this is a picture of the And I would argue that in this

65:02 picture they didn't just put all the there just to confuse themselves and think

65:08 what they did as they were drawing heart. They were explaining it to

65:11 and they were labeling it as they to help them visualize what they were

65:16 . So this is the sum of studying as opposed to I need to

65:21 this. That kind of makes And that's kind of the same way

65:25 know, scribble and doodle. You not need to be an artist.

65:28 can tell you right now I am an artist. Um Here's here's here's

65:34 heart. I'm just gonna show you . This is this is how we

65:39 a heart has four chambers. But that enough for me to explain?

65:52 you now understand how many chambers of has? Yeah you see you don't

65:58 to draw a perfect heart when you're this stuff. You do not need

66:01 be an artist. It's kind of if you are but it's not a

66:05 skill unless you're planning on going to illustration. Which case awesome. Ah

66:14 drives. There's gonna be one of . Alright. Yeah. Alright.

66:18 I come from a different generation where entire college life was centered around partying

66:23 having fun. Um I don't know that's you guys, I mean every

66:26 I talk to you guys you guys kind of shocked. Like I mentioned

66:29 word beer and you're like yeah I to school in new Orleans, I

66:34 that school because it was new Orleans to Tulane right? Um So really

66:42 on. There we go. Alright you study study and when you don't

66:50 , do something else, don't call studying, studying. Does that make

66:55 ? Let me give you an example many of you when you're studying,

66:58 sitting at your desk, you already the story because I use it every

67:01 you're sitting at your desk, you're I'm studying, I'm gonna study and

67:04 sitting there and all of a sudden like I can't focus, I gotta

67:07 clean the bathroom and so you go you literally clean the bathroom with a

67:11 behind the toilet. I mean we're the whole nine yards and then after

67:15 done cleaning the toilets like well if already dirty I'm gonna go ahead and

67:19 the kitchen and you go and clean kitchen and after you clean the

67:21 it's like well now I'm hungry. then I'm gonna go wash my

67:24 make myself a sandwich and I got clean up after myself. And then

67:26 finally go back to your desk. sit down, you study for about

67:29 minutes and then you get on whatever social media is nowadays and go,

67:33 , I've been studying for an hour a half. No, no,

67:36 haven't. You've been studying for five . All right, let me give

67:40 an example. Another example here. you sit around and not study and

67:44 take exam an exam or you go an exam, you're gonna do

67:48 Right? So if you've been studying that, what I just described,

67:51 go clean the toilet, clean the , and then go take your

67:53 You're gonna get a crappy grade. you take a road trip to Mexico

67:58 party all night and then go take exam, you're going to get a

68:03 grade. Which one gives you the story for that crappy grade. Which

68:08 is gonna go down in infamy which the ones that you're gonna be the

68:13 Mexico. Right? If you're not legend for cleaning your bathroom.

68:17 notice one is a positive thing, and one is not, but this

68:23 is the same. So be honest yourself. When you're studying, If

68:28 say I can't study for more than minutes and sit down and study for

68:31 minutes. Then take that break and go back and study for another 15

68:36 . Don't sit there and stare at ceiling. Right? Don't be

68:39 If you get unfocused, you're not what you said you're going to do

68:43 you're gonna get that crappy gary. lie to yourself. And the truth

68:46 , humans are incredibly good liars. love lying to ourselves. So understand

68:51 you're lying to yourself if you use time. Well you can go out

68:56 have the fun now if that's not and your fun is something different,

68:59 fine. But remember I'm a different . Okay. Um Normally what I

69:05 do is I'd show you how to a picture of the digestive system,

69:08 I've already shown you how to do heart. So there you go.

69:12 right. So when you study, do you study? Well, right

69:15 classes, what I said, so shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes

69:18 an hour to reorganize your notes in own words so that you understand

69:23 what you're doing here is you're taking 30 some odd slides and you're converting

69:27 into about two or three pages of for yourself for studying for the

69:35 All right. So instead of studying some odd slides for an exam,

69:39 now studying roughly about 18 slides for exam. Which is easier. Which

69:43 you rather do 18 or 200? what exact same number of orbits of

69:51 you've already tricked yourself? It's what's the difference between a pound of

69:55 and a pound of lead? Nothing just the material. They're both a

70:00 . Right? So there's a pound information in 200 slides. There's a

70:05 of information. 18 slides. The . You've organized it. You

70:09 everything is you are now in charge your education. It doesn't take that

70:14 to do this right after class, already cutting down the amount of time

70:18 , right? Because it's fresh in brain. You don't have to spend

70:20 lot of time doing it. And when you study for your exam,

70:23 all you do is you take those and you read them. You are

70:27 going to get a good grade. . I'm not gonna see is a

70:30 grade. It really is not a grade, but I know what you

70:32 are thinking. You need higher grades sees. So if you want to

70:36 beyond that seed, don't just sit and read notes. Reading is passive

70:43 right. You want to be You want to be an active

70:45 So take those notes, turn them down so that you can't see them

70:49 them away from. You get a piece of paper. The most scary

70:52 or instrument on the planet. Why blank pieces of paper scary? There's

70:59 there and you have to fill So what's the first thing we always

71:02 when we get a blank piece of put our name on it,

71:05 Because now it's not empty anymore. ? At least I got my name

71:09 ? Actually knew a kid who couldn't his name right long time ago.

71:15 . So with that blank piece of start thinking about how you organize

71:19 What was the things that I had learn? Oh today was the integral

71:22 the first lecture. Was integral. are the four things in the integral

71:25 I learned? Oh yeah, there's , there's hair, there's nails,

71:29 is glands. Great. What do need to know about the skin?

71:33 there's three different types. There's three layers. We have the epidermis,

71:37 dermis and the hypodermic. What is epidermis? Do you see what we're

71:41 is we're going through and now we're through that organization that we created in

71:44 head and we're showing ourselves what it that we actually learn and after you

71:50 out all the information for every lecture you need to know when you are

71:54 your, for that exam, what can do is you can take your

71:57 that you created and you pull them and you compare with the notes that

72:01 just wrote out and you compare the , Everything that you wrote down over

72:05 that matches your original notes is something know, Pat yourself on the

72:12 You know something. Everything that you know is demonstrated by what you wrote

72:18 wrong or left off. Now when study, do we study the stuff

72:23 we don't know? Or do we this stuff that we already know right

72:28 ? We already know why it's comfortable I have to look at something,

72:34 don't know. It makes me feel about myself and it makes me feel

72:38 . So I don't like feeling that myself, do I? So what

72:42 I do? I'm gonna go over to the stuff that I do

72:45 Oh look, I know this It makes me feel good. I'm

72:48 to do well in the exam. did I just do? I lied

72:52 myself. What we need to do we need to go face our fears

72:58 we need to address what we don't . So everything that I didn't write

73:03 everything that I wrote down wrong, cross off what I wrote down wrong

73:07 I replaced it with what's right from here. Anything that I left empty

73:11 I didn't that I didn't write down I scribble it out now, why

73:14 I do that? It's kind of punishment. My brain has to deal

73:18 me writing that out And it forces into that little slot. So the

73:23 time I come back and I do , take my good notes. Put

73:27 over here, rip up my old . Take a small break. 15

73:30 later I come back and I say right, what did I learn?

73:33 I start writing everything out. You're start seeing the stuff that you

73:37 End up over here. This is test, right? You don't know

73:43 gonna be on the test, do ? This is how much information is

73:47 the test, right? That you to learn. This is how much

73:51 might actually see, right? So you are trying to study for a

73:56 , it's better to cover all the just in case and you do

74:02 you're gonna see success now. I I could bring in students in here

74:06 have taken my classes before, who done this methodology. Who could tell

74:10 ? Oh yeah, this does I have students who email me regularly

74:13 are medical school, Dental School nursing . Oh dr Warren, I still

74:16 your method. It's not my I wish it was my method.

74:18 would have patented it. I would sold it. I would have made

74:21 and I wouldn't be up here I'd be sitting in an office someplace

74:25 my money. But I like So I'd probably be in the classroom

74:29 . Alright. It's not my It's just one of the best

74:34 It's using the methods that work And the truth is you spend less

74:39 studying more time learning and getting better , how does that sound? That's

74:45 a I don't have to study as as I normally do. You mean

74:49 can spread out my studies so I have to spend up all night pounding

74:52 Bull and every monster drink and get hands on so that when I wake

74:55 I can't even close my eyes. ? I study less here that I

75:02 less. I learn more. What's goal? Learn more And my grades

75:10 what I learned. That's what grades . They just reflect what you've

75:14 So once you learn how to you repeat this process over and over

75:19 . You're gonna learn the information. gonna go into an examining. You're

75:21 gonna have test anxiety again. How of you guys have test anxiety?

75:25 region of test anxiety Because you haven't the information. Stop it. Start

75:30 the information. You won't be scared taking exams. I've already told you

75:34 test does not determine who you are a person. It just tells you

75:37 or not you learn the material. if you learn the material no longer

75:47 them. Why do we use I still got five minutes? I

75:53 I know you guys are desperate to out of here use textbooks when you

75:56 know something and I'm unavailable. All . So you know where the information

76:01 . Just go back and look at section when you need it. If

76:08 have a question, do you sit and hold it quietly inside?

76:12 no. You asking in class Oh, look at that. He's

76:17 hero. Why is a hero? she's sitting there. I have no

76:21 what this guy is talking about. the professor is right. I'm gonna

76:44 practice questions in the sense that they questions from the exam. These are

76:51 I threw off exams because I don't them anymore. All right. One

76:57 thing we can pass that you can that later. It's this how many

77:04 guys know how to take a multiple exam. You guys comfortable multiple choice

77:08 . What's the first type of question answer? Well, no, your

77:13 . It's the easy ones. Start the first question. If you look

77:16 it and you don't know the skip it. Do not panic.

77:20 . That will happen to you. skip and go to the next

77:22 Go down till you can find the question. You keep answering easy

77:26 you go all the way through the . You answer all the easy questions

77:30 you're gonna build up the confidence and kind of warming yourself up. It's

77:33 stretching before a run. All And so what you're gonna do is

77:37 answer those questions, then you go to the next level and then you

77:40 to the next level and then you to the next level to finally get

77:42 those last two questions where it's like don't know what, I don't know

77:45 it is but it's one of these answers and what do you do at

78:05 check the answers. Like you've always doing read your question, read your

78:11 . If it makes a true statement got it right. If it doesn't

78:16 a true statement you got it Now let me show you why this

78:18 important. Remember what I said is learned this much information but only this

78:31 sunset and it's actually even this really time if the sun is setting over

78:35 ocean at a certain angle, the can be green for a very very

78:39 second right now imagine with all that in your head now you have this

78:44 , the color of the sky and sitting there going, oh there's

78:47 there's gray, there's red, there's and you're like, I didn't see

78:51 question about clouds. So maybe this the cloud question. Maybe he's trying

78:55 trick me if you had that happen the test, they're trying to trick

79:03 not the right answer. Color, sky is orange, you know that's

79:07 the right answer. But if you the color, the sky is
