00:38 | So it was you know, perfectly . I don't know why they thought |

00:41 | was my room because I've had my forever. Anyway, so this is |
|

00:45 | of the general information for when we and stuff. My office is over |
|

00:48 | SRT you guys know where S. . Two is. It's an ugly |

00:51 | brown building by the big building. S. R. One. Don't |
|
|
00:55 | too confused. I'm on the second basically if you go up the |
|
|
00:59 | take a left and go halfway down hall, I'm there. If you |

04:44 | saying I'm gonna be in the what you're doing is basically clicking the |
|
|
04:47 | button. Alright. And so there's you go and look at it, |
|

04:51 | really long. It's about 13 pages gobbledygook and I say gobbledygook because every |
|

04:56 | of the provost's office asked me to something else in there that really isn't |
|
|
05:01 | . But I'm doing it because they me to. But if you look |
|
|
05:04 | it it's like here's what the this is what when the tests |
|
|
05:07 | this is what the class material is be. This is what the reading |
|
|
05:10 | what the textbook is going to be . Uh Here's your assignments and so |

05:14 | . That's all there. If you . You should go and look at |
|
|
05:17 | , see what I have or what expecting of you. But there's also |
|
|
05:21 | know like a great policy. Um I'll get to that and just admit |
|
|
05:26 | what grades are. But like the honesty policy that you've all agreed to |

05:31 | just attending the university when the uh it means to get an incomplete how |
|
|
05:36 | withdraw all that stuff there. So you haven't looked at your syllabus |

05:40 | I would encourage you to do so I'm right handed. So I tend |

05:43 | be on this side. I will really really hard to come over here |

|
|
09:20 | people who don't understand the difference between and wrong when it comes to |

09:25 | All right. And so, if don't understand, you should probably find |

09:30 | what it means to be to what university considers to be cheating or what |
|

09:36 | is or plagiarizing you guys know what word plagiarism means, Do you guys |

|
09:42 | you know what it is though? . You nodded your head. You |
|
|
09:45 | give me an answer now. Very . That's that's actually the best |
|
|
09:53 | So what is it when you take that belongs to somebody else? What |
|
|
09:55 | that stealing? It's it's it's literally to as um intellectual stealing, intellectual |

10:02 | stealing. And you guys are probably it's no big, no big |
|

10:05 | No big deal. Let me tell a quick story. This is what |
|
|
10:07 | famous for. This is why my go so long as I tell stories |

10:11 | some people are not in their heads . Yeah. Yeah, I know |

10:13 | does. I had a student, have a paper in this class, |
|
|
10:15 | talk about the paper a little bit uh student turned in the paper. |
|

10:20 | you know there's two rounds. So , this was in the second round |
|
|
10:24 | gets his emails and says dr I'm grading my own paper, which |
|
|
10:29 | an impossibility. Alright, you hear right? I'm grading my own |
|
|
10:33 | I said that's not possible, let go check it out. And he |
|
|
10:36 | in grade in his paper was great other students paper and I went looked |
|
|
10:40 | that student had reviewed or in the review of that that particular students, |
|
|
10:44 | first person, the first students like the paper so much that literally |
|
|
10:49 | whole blocks of text, full paragraphs and submit it as their own. |
|
|
10:58 | they thought they would get away with , but it just so happened that |
|
|
11:00 | random number generator put them back together . Just the opposite direction. Person |
|
|
11:06 | kicked out of the college and was from the university for three years. |
|
|
11:11 | able to come back. Maybe it four years, but there are dire |
|
|
11:15 | . This is not just a a issue, it's not just a thing |
|
|
11:20 | you see in professionalism, it happens the level of the university as |
|
|
11:23 | And so part of this is to you. Now, let you understand |
|
|
11:28 | will happen if you do this what it does, it outlines your |
|
|
11:32 | just as well as it outlines Right, so just be aware of |
|
|
11:34 | that means. If you have a to fall into that category of like |
|
|
11:40 | stuff from a friend or copying their . This is not the time to |
|
|
11:43 | it. I've had students who went to professional schools, you all piling |
|
|
11:46 | professional school. # one on their is integrity. Number one had a |
|
|
11:52 | went to dental school, third year student got caught cheating on an |
|
|
11:56 | It took her several years to get dental school. I might add you |
|
|
12:00 | her out of school not going back the dream. So we try to |
|
|
12:05 | it now so that you can achieve goals for the future. Lastly, |
|
|
12:08 | you have a need for an accommodation the course. Uh This is the |
|
|
12:13 | you go to. There's also phone , there's also 1000 ways on the |
|
|
12:17 | basically go up to U. Of . Dot E. D. |
|
|
12:18 | Putting any search term you want in case would be accessibility. And you |
|
|
12:22 | go and look up and you can out how the university can accommodate you |
|
|
12:26 | you have a need for accommodation, know? So Look, if you |
|
|
12:30 | know where something is, you have you search engine just plug in the |
|
|
12:33 | words and it will pop up almost times out of 10. It'll pop |
|
|
12:37 | first on the first on the It's not second on the list. |

|
12:41 | been here long enough. The Do you like blackboard? One person |
|
|
12:46 | ahead. I think blackboard sucks. not. No, it's a terrible |

12:52 | of software. All right. But is where everything is, this is |

12:55 | learning system. So this is where see announcements. I post them there |

12:58 | then they get emailed out to you they'll they'll remain there for some |

13:02 | The syllabus city policy. Any panned ? You need like a lecture. |

13:06 | I always release lecture slides an hour class. I know if you're trying |
|
|
13:10 | print them up. That's kind of pain in the butt, but there's |

13:12 | reason for it. Any assignment that have particularly um Like the reading assignments |
|
|
13:18 | your writing assignments are gonna be there well. Things that you've turned |
|
|
13:21 | I record every lecture. This is yeah, by the way, if |
|
|
13:24 | in the front row always check to that orange lights on. If it |
|
|
13:27 | off we're not recording anything. Um But anyway, so any of |
|
|
13:32 | video recordings that I make, there'll links there. Uh It's where the |
|
|
13:36 | book is and it's not really a book, it's just where your grades |
|
|
13:39 | be recorded so that you can look them. This is why I say |
|
|
13:42 | mostly inaccurate. It cannot calculate your . You're gonna have to be responsible |
|
|
13:46 | that yourself. Alright. My math far far more complicated than blackboards, |
|
|
13:51 | can barely add two numbers together. I will show you how to determine |
|
|
13:54 | grade. You're responsible for doing Do not make decisions based on what |
|
|
13:59 | tells you. It's like listening to three year old. Okay. It |
|
|
14:03 | know what it's doing. It's useful keeping track of the scores to make |
|
|
14:07 | they're recorded correctly. It's not good calculating. Alright. I'm just letting |
|

14:11 | know that now um stuff you actually about. When do I have to |
|
|
14:17 | my test? Well there's one every and that's just a function of every |
|
|
14:20 | lecture. Um So the first one 13th in october 6th november 1st and |
|
|
14:27 | we're signed december 8th, so that's we do our our fourth exam, |

|
14:32 | don't, you'll hear me say but they're just they're all the |
|
|
14:35 | They're just every exam is non It just deals with the unit that |
|
|
14:38 | looking at. I don't drop any the exams. Their basic 50 |
|
|
14:43 | multiple choice, 100 points total. this pattern right here 50 questions over |
|

14:48 | hour, that's what that is. one hour Um is standard for our |
|
|
14:52 | standard for our field. So those you planning on going into the health |
|
|
14:57 | ? This is what everything is gonna like from now on. All right |
|
|
15:00 | obviously if college setting different when you and you know take your boards, |
|
|
15:04 | your qualifying exams, all these different are going to have that kind of |
|
|
15:09 | there, maybe 200 questions. But it's 200 questions you would have four |

15:15 | , right, that makes sense. Anyone here knew not not aware of |

|
15:21 | do not be, don't be afraid say, okay casa is our testing |
|
|
15:25 | . It doesn't look anything like That's a picture I stole off the |

15:29 | of some random thing. Um And you do is on the days that |

15:34 | have exams we don't have class. so what you're gonna do is you're |

15:38 | go to the cost of testing center you've been assigned to. There are |

15:41 | of them. So you have to aware of which one you've been assigned |

15:44 | before you go there. You need go to that website register and then |
|
|
15:48 | need to go over to a cost one of them and you have to |
|
|
15:51 | your biometric which is basically a digital which really isn't your thumbprint. It's |
|
|
15:55 | a biometric. So that when you and check in you show them your |
|
|
15:58 | , you do the biometric. They do that right? Yeah and then |
|
|
16:02 | and then your that's how you check to take your exam. So don't |
|
|
16:06 | up here, you'll be sad and on the days of exams you're gonna |

16:11 | to casa to do that. So one of those four days I would |
|

16:15 | because I have taken the slide out casa opens up. So let's say |

16:20 | want to sign up for an exam the 13th of september who can tell |

16:25 | what day sign ups open two weeks . So if that's a Tuesday it |

16:32 | at midnight on a monday two weeks . And just like you trying to |

16:38 | a seat on Southwest Airlines, you're be sitting with your finger over the |

16:41 | at midnight desperately trying to get that that you want. No one laughed |

19:03 | have opportunities to do so. And know that they're not tough do |

19:08 | I'm not saying don't drive. I'm telling you guys to leave the |

19:14 | this is like the crocs class. gotta take it. Well, how |

19:17 | guys have heard that? Medical or school is really, really hard. |

19:28 | dense. That's that's there's a Right? The material isn't difficult. |

19:33 | at our textbook. What's the name our textbook? Medical physiology? They |

19:39 | you the exact same thing. I'm you. All right. They just |

19:43 | a lot of it right material. not hard. It's just there's lots |
|
|
19:49 | it. And so one of the that we overcome quantity. Thank you |

19:53 | much. The way we overcome quantity we get used to bearing that |

19:58 | How many guys lift weights workout? . First day did you start, |
|
|
20:04 | you start just like I'm gonna jacket as much as I can go. |
|
|
20:08 | you start low and you build up finally you can actually do a lot |
|
|
20:13 | . Alright so 11 of the things we're doing is we're training ourselves to |

20:18 | dealing with the quantity of information that's be coming at. You see college |
|
|
20:23 | weird in the sense that we How many classes do we take in |
|
|
20:26 | semester? Like four Maybe 5. . If we're crazy six. |
|
|
20:35 | And then they're interspersed win. It's oh well I got two on Tuesday |
|
|
20:39 | . I got two on monday Wednesday . I got this weird class over |
|
|
20:43 | on a Wednesday, right we've got big gaps. We don't know what |
|
|
20:46 | do with them. You're supposed to . Um Right well medical and dental |
|
|
20:51 | is not like that. Medical and school is like going to work. |
|
|
20:57 | go and get there early in the . Eight o'clock nine o'clock whenever classes |
|
|
21:01 | and then you take class class class class class class. Class. |
|
|
21:04 | go home study, rinse repeat, lots of work not hard, just |
|
|
21:13 | of it. How do you govern that stuff? Well you need to |
|
|
21:16 | ready and prepared for it. It's different. Remember when you made that |
|
|
21:19 | from high school to college and everything all weird is like oh no one's |
|
|
21:23 | me, I'm just sitting here and like doing nothing in high school. |
|
|
21:26 | all of a sudden now they're expecting to do much more difficult stuff, |
|
|
21:30 | difficult. It's just coming at you . That's the same thing. So |
|
|
21:34 | reading assignments are to help you start ready for that pace of material. |
|
|
21:42 | . So what you're gonna do is gonna read the book in reading what |
|
|
21:48 | expectation is is not for you to notes and spend seven hours reading. |
|
|
21:53 | know I can already see you two going to do that. You're gonna |
|
|
21:55 | like I'm gonna get the book and gonna take notes all night long. |
|
|
21:59 | don't do that. Read the book you're reading a magazine, get a |
|
|
22:04 | of what's going on and what you're to be learning in the next lecture |
|
|
22:08 | make sure that you've read. Because I was a student too and I |
|
|
22:12 | I wouldn't I wouldn't do the reading you made me. So I'm making |
|
|
22:16 | there is a reading assignment and I'm a quiz that comes available before class |
|
|
22:22 | you have to complete. Now these low stakes quizzes, right? If |
|
|
22:26 | decide not to ever do a quiz highest grade you'll ever in the class |
|
|
22:29 | the 90%ile right? So that is , is it the end of your |
|
|
22:34 | if you miss a quiz the one like yes, no no no. |
|
|
22:39 | this strategy here is yes. Do the quiz. Read and do |
|
|
22:43 | quiz. I've asked every class since started signing this book. First day |
|
|
22:48 | class. They all hated the reading it's long and it's hard and scary |
|
|
22:51 | there's big words and there's a little print and blah blah blah by the |
|
|
22:55 | of the semester money. How's the ? Like it's easy why they started |
|
|
23:00 | with £5. They're now up to . Okay. So don't be scared |
|
|
23:05 | it. It's not that terrible. . But the idea here is we're |
|
|
23:09 | reading to absorb information. We're reading understand where it is and to be |
|
|
23:14 | to start introducing ideas to ourselves. right. Like I said 10% of |
|
|
23:19 | final grade. So this is kind what your typical week is gonna look |
|
|
23:22 | for me. Look, I'll be first one to tell you my class |
|
|
23:25 | not the most important class you'll ever . It's not the most important class |
|
|
23:29 | semester. Ah I wish it were it's not how many guys are taking |
|
|
23:35 | least a full load. 15 Each one of those 15 hours is |
|
|
23:39 | important, right? So I'm not have no expectation that my class like |
|
|

25:10 | journals. Alright. My wife is physical therapist. She gets a physical |

25:16 | therapy journal. She writes notes. job literally is see a patient for |
|
|
25:20 | hour, write a note for two . That is her job. |

25:25 | It is writing writing, writing, intensive science in general, health professions |

|
25:31 | general is lots of writing. So we're doing here is getting you used |
|

25:35 | this idea of I need to be to communicate through my writing now your |
|
|
25:41 | lives. You have been used to a paper for your professor, |
|
|
25:46 | If I can use the right language make him feel good about himself for |
|
|
25:49 | , about him herself. She's gonna me a good a or he's gonna |

|
25:53 | me a good a that's not how works. Right. Well it does |
|
|
25:57 | some places but it doesn't work for most part. When we write we |
|
|
26:02 | usually writing to an audience, a of people who are gonna be interested |

26:08 | the subject matter is. So the we do writing here is we are |

26:12 | to our peers. Alright, so going to do a literature review. |
|
|
26:17 | a whole bunch of topics that are become available right after class and you |
|
|
26:20 | go look up, you can go what the topics are if you like |

26:23 | join the group, correct each of . I think there's like 20 slots |

26:27 | each one of them. I think nine topics and there's 130 of |
|
|
26:31 | so plenty of slots. So figure what it is that you're like, |

|
26:34 | this sounds interesting to me, sign for that particular slot and now what |
|
|
26:37 | gonna do is you're going to write literature review on whatever that topic happens |

|
26:41 | be. So, it's very You don't get to choose your own |
|
|
26:44 | other than through that list. All . And then what you're doing is |

26:47 | writing to the rest of your In essence on this topic. All |
|
|
26:52 | . It's kind of like writing a article and so you're gonna learn how |

26:56 | write technically. Alright. You're not be trying to impress me because I |
|

27:00 | grade these. Guess who grades You do. That's the peer review |
|
|
27:06 | . Everyone refuse reviews. Five this is completely blind. You will |
|
|
27:11 | know whose paper you're getting and it's to be one of those other |

27:14 | You can get the same topic. know, papers from people who wrote |

|
27:17 | the same material, You can get from other things. This kind of |
|
|
27:22 | people. It's easy mode. I it easy for you guys. I'm |

27:26 | show you why here in a second . This is like a test grade |

27:29 | you. It's about 18. It's . Alright. And so this is |

27:33 | of what it looks like. I to back up because now I'm like |

27:36 | mode. Alright. So what we're do is uh on september 9th you |

27:40 | have your topic picked out. So like three weeks. Okay. That's |

27:45 | , right? And then the following you need to find at least 10 |

27:52 | So that's by the next friday. then each of these stages are going |

27:56 | be, there's a peer review each of them and literally peer reviews |

27:59 | no time through this portion. So you get a minimum number of |

28:04 | and you start writing your discussion outline on the sources that you've already |

28:08 | and then you start writing your introduction on the materials that you have gathered |

28:12 | kind of saying, how do I this material? So the idea is |

28:15 | I'm slowly putting a paper together over and then eventually what I'm gonna have |

|
28:19 | I'm gonna start working on my my draft here. So from here to |
|
|
28:23 | you can see we have about a , so you can get that main |
|

28:26 | done. Then that goes out to review. You get your results |
|
|
28:29 | you bitch it to me for a while and I say quit worrying about |

28:32 | , go and make these changes. you'll do some revisions on it and |
|

28:36 | you resubmit it and it gets re by all of you guys. And |

|
28:39 | the end of that you'll have a . You will see that you go |
|
|
28:42 | here to there. You'll see improvement your writing. You'll be looking at |

28:45 | people's papers. You'll see, This is how they did it. |

28:48 | want to kind of do that We're not talking to plagiarism part. |

28:51 | talking like you're basically using each other help sharpen each other as writers and |
|

28:57 | how we become better writers. It's me reading the same paper over and |
|

29:01 | again and getting frustrated and wondering why don't drink harder. That's a |

29:11 | the weight of these things is. I mean this is based on your |
|

29:15 | your final grade. So picking your 5%.5% of your final grade, your |

29:21 | .5%, then 1%, That first here is 5% of your final grade |

29:27 | the last draft is worth 9%. if you sum all that up, |

|
29:30 | 18% of your final grade. All now with all this in mind and |
|

29:33 | these deadlines, I need to point here that the software that we use |

29:36 | is turned it in. And because attached to a peer review. These |

29:40 | really kind of hard deadlines it's very difficult if you miss an assignment failed |

29:45 | turn it in on time and there's little bit of leeway there. I'm |

29:49 | you guys to turn it in like 24 hours or something. But if |
|
|
29:51 | fail them as deadlines you basically lose the points for that section. So |

29:55 | need to be diligent in getting these done alright but it's not hard in |

29:59 | way that this is spread out it's a lot of effort in other words |

52:00 | you telling me that if I practice , I'll get better at something. |

52:05 | , athletes figured this out a long ago. You'd think that the spark |
