00:02 | So how do you all? Um we're looking at today is a |
00:05 | very short video on your grades and they represent. So what we're looking |
00:11 | this particular chart is the exam distribution the first test, and you can |
00:17 | over here on the right side, have a list of the, uh |
00:22 | know, the stats for the So there's your average. It was |
00:26 | 61.8 standard deviation, 17 highest low grade. And what the medium |
00:32 | is there. And if you look this, you can kind of just |
00:35 | , it's like this is a really weird graph. This is actually |
00:39 | atypical of a semester. So I have a that are like |
00:43 | And then what you normally see is see, grades kind of do this |
00:45 | then kind of scroll down the simple bell curve. But we don't |
00:49 | that here, do we? it kind of has this. All |
00:53 | , here's our low, and then just kind of just sits up here |
00:56 | then kind of peters off, and kind of made me nervous when I |
01:00 | looked at it but, um, went and I took a look at |
01:05 | semesters. So the average that you're at here, I'm not upset with |
01:10 | . That's that's what I'm shooting I should for an average on my |
01:13 | between a 60 a 65. And that is something you don't understand, |
01:19 | want you to think about like If I have grades that air in |
01:22 | hundreds and I'm not really testing to out where the limited your knowledge |
01:27 | I need to find out. Am challenging you enough to think? And |
01:32 | if I'm getting hundreds, then I really pushed you all with regard to |
01:38 | your knowledge so that we have just couple of people out here. That's |
01:44 | we're trying to achieve. Remember Raising all the ink on the slide |
01:50 | look like a bell curve, You shouldn't have more than one or |
01:56 | maximum hundreds. If you see a like you see in some classes in |
02:02 | liberal arts, it might look something this where it's just kind of a |
02:08 | slow, and that's totally useless. doesn't tell you anything about whether or |
02:13 | . People have learned that just shows that they're capable of regurgitation. So |
02:18 | where's, you know? Like I , I saw this and it doesn't |
02:21 | that natural bell curve. You can we do have a tail down |
02:25 | We have that a tale, but is kind of this flat thing. |
02:29 | what I did, I wouldn't. look, I looked at other semesters |
02:33 | , uh, semester, where in this little in this graph is the |
02:36 | one and you can see there is average 61.87 But then you go and |
02:41 | at spring from last year, it a little bit higher. Spring grades |
02:44 | typically higher, but here in the , that's the average from last |
02:51 | So everything is in line. The is is that the performance isn't quite |
02:56 | well distributed. In other words, had a fatter tail. So let |
03:02 | just back up so you can kind see here racing kind of slide. |
03:05 | can see down here at the bottom . It was a little bit |
03:10 | and so I've been trying to figure what this actually means, and I |
03:15 | what it represents is just the format which people are learning. It's |
03:19 | very difficult to be a self all right, if we could self |
03:25 | , then we wouldn't have a need school. We would just do. |
03:28 | typically most people are lazy. This myself, you know, it takes |
03:34 | lot of effort for me to get to do stuff, and so |
03:38 | what you would see as you'd expect . A portion of this group really |
03:42 | of be up in this range. what's happened is because you're in an |
03:47 | environment, it's easy to turn your off. It's easy to see or |
03:52 | see where you're where you're not really attention, and it catches up with |
03:57 | in the end. So if you're yourself struggling, you need to make |
04:03 | a schedule and say, I will this. I will do this. |
04:07 | need to be in charge of the . Remember what I saw the first |
04:11 | of class. It's about time management becomes the main important part. So |
04:16 | you're if you find your grades down this range, all right, you |
04:19 | to first work on that time And then second, you need to |
04:23 | about how doe I manage, studying and learning material on my |
04:28 | And this is where those those slides gave you talking about how to study |
04:35 | important. All right, how to about studying. And so the idea |
04:39 | after each class I go, I and I listen to the lecture, |
04:43 | take notes. And then after each , I take those notes and I |
04:47 | him down. And I organize myself that I can, um, process |
04:52 | and store it longer so that when ultimately have to take the test when |
04:56 | preparing for it, I've already have that organization, and I have much |
05:01 | that information already stored in memory. haven't watched that video, or if |
05:05 | ignored my advice, this is the to go back and listen to All |
05:10 | . So here we are again, at the exams as as a comparison |
05:15 | that first exam in terms of averages online with regular semesters. Now, |
05:24 | talk about the overall grade that you're right now. So this is a |
05:29 | of what it looks like for your average. And remember, you can |
05:33 | your average in a very simple You just take your test average multiplied |
05:38 | 0.7 to take a quiz average multiplied 0.1. Take your paper grade. |
05:43 | , on. And for the you know, the only thing we |
05:45 | was to find the source is so you turn that in or starting out |
05:49 | sources, you all you have to is pick your topic to turn that |
05:52 | . That was 100. So the with this graph is that it's |
05:56 | heavily weighted in favor of the paper . So if you just if you |
06:01 | picture topic, you gotta hunt. got 18 points out of the out |
06:05 | 100 or for the whole thing. so, as you can imagine as |
06:09 | go along, as there is more more assignments, each assignment is going |
06:14 | be diluted in that so you're great not as strong. So right |
06:19 | this is kind of the breakdown. could see what I did to |
06:23 | My class fail right now is a . And so there is a portion |
06:27 | students for below that. And that mean that you're stuck there. You |
06:31 | easily bring yourself over that threshold. fact, most students do do |
06:38 | So make sure that you're doing all assignments. That means you're doing. |
06:43 | quiz is right. Every night you your reading, then you do your |
06:47 | and then you correct your quiz. you mean take it a second time |
06:51 | , answer any questions, you to try to bring yourself up to |
06:54 | higher grade. I always take the grade of the quizzes of the two |
06:58 | you did. All right. The thing is your test average Well, |
07:02 | you're gonna have to worry about on next exam. But you've taken this |
07:06 | . Don't need to worry about exam . Figure out why you're missing your |
07:11 | and and then make some adjustments to you study it again. I would |
07:14 | Go back and listen to how I study. But you can see here |
07:19 | does this? What does the great like? So a range right now |
07:23 | at about a 90. Alright. that's fairly typical. If I actually |
07:26 | the natural bell curve. It would way up here, and that wouldn't |
07:30 | fair. Anybody, So we don't that. It's just if the curve |
07:33 | favor you, then it doesn't It just stays as what would be |
07:37 | normal A. But you can see here the B range is a little |
07:43 | broader. It's not. It doesn't at 80. It starts at 77.5 |
07:47 | now and then the C range starts 63 then the rain starts at |
07:53 | Now moving from here to here over next couple of weeks is not hard |
07:58 | do. Moving from here to here not hard to do. Moving up |
08:03 | here gets a little bit more and obviously, moving up to there |
08:06 | a little bit more difficult. But not impossible. So if you're if |
08:10 | dissatisfied with your great right now, you gotta do is do some self |
08:16 | . It's basically what am I doing ? What am I doing wrong? |
08:20 | do I make corrections? And then hardest part is then actually doing the |
08:25 | , making those changes in your lifestyle your study habits to achieve your |
08:30 | All right. People who are successful necessarily the biggest and the brightest. |
08:35 | the ones that recognize how to adjust modify their behavior to achieve their |
08:42 | All right, so that's what you be doing here is making those |
08:46 | I saw a lot of people here those quizzes that you're just kind of |
08:50 | them off, and that's gonna you that's gonna kill you. It's gonna |
08:54 | you up, you know? it's just 10% of my great |
08:57 | but over the course of semester, That's the difference between A and B |
09:01 | being a C and A D N C even a nothing to be |
09:06 | So you wanna you want to be those quizzes, so make sure you're |
09:10 | the reading by doing the reading. preparing you for the lectures which is |
09:15 | you for the exams. Everything is . Finally, the easy thing to |
09:21 | screw up on is not doing the evaluations. Alright, so each of |
09:27 | things are a little tiny points. right now you have, like 0.25 |
09:33 | . I can't remember what it You know, that makes up |
09:36 | but because it's 100% of your I'm giving you the full 1000.18 But |
09:41 | now, that one great is only worth about 10.25 points of your final |
09:46 | . So you can imagine the next is gonna increase the next time increases |
09:50 | increases. And if you fair to failed to do the peer evaluations and |
09:55 | of them are due on Tuesday or , I actually when they pulled up |
09:59 | take a look so I don't make mistake here. Um, yeah, |
10:03 | all due on Tuesday, Tuesday at , after each assignment. So you |
10:08 | turn in your sources in theory, time. And so you're going to |
10:14 | those assignments, turn you turn them now going to your peer evaluations, |
10:19 | then you get to keep your If you don't do the peer |
10:21 | you lose the points for that all right? And if you don't |
10:25 | an assignment, you don't get to the peer evaluations. It's a simple |
10:28 | that so today, while you're since listening to this video right after this |
10:35 | , I'm going to go do my evaluations and get it done. All |
10:38 | , and then start working on the time. So moving forward, This |
10:42 | not the time to panic. So no panicking. What we do is |
10:46 | evaluate. We assess, we make and adjustments, and we bring ourselves |
10:52 | . I'd love to see everybody get great. Right? That's what I'd |
10:55 | to see everybody and remember, because are curves. You These values are |
11:00 | to change after each exam, so sit there at the end of special |
11:04 | waiting. You said to be with 77 everyone improves that grade is gonna |
11:10 | . All right, so keep that mind, but that that's all you |
11:15 | to know about the tests, You , um, just get yourself |
11:19 | We're moving into unit to and hope stays nice and |
