00:00 Mhm. Interesting. Uh Yeah, . And he. Ok.

00:42 so, ok, folks, I am Doctor Knapp. This is

00:52 for science majors. OK. So is 2321. Um Welcome. The

01:02 today is more or less quickly go kind of overview stuff. You've,

01:07 emailed you many of you two weeks already about, you know, um

01:13 of course is about kind of copy syllabus by then. Um You have

01:17 to canvas, I'm sure. Um hopefully you familiarize yourself with some of

01:24 , what I call administrative stuff. . So we'll go through quickly.

01:29 a couple of things I want to out. Um when uh and one

01:34 the things is when you've been as long as I've been here,

01:37 sure you've heard all sorts of things me. He sucks. He's

01:43 He's great. He's big, you , and everything in between,

01:48 So, um and you've likely heard of suggestions about how to study for

01:55 course. It's fine. Of you can ask people that have taken

01:59 last semester and a semester before. . Um Just take that advice,

02:07 with a grain of salt because those you that advice are not,

02:13 you learn differently. Uh, uh, it's the, how to

02:18 is going to be a process that evolve. Ok. So I'll mention

02:22 , uh, talk about that in little while. Ok. So,

02:26 , one of the things we can do in the course of the semester

02:32 , and if you heard anything if you heard anything about me from

02:36 people, you know, that I'm , I don't necessarily talk in like

02:41 sci scientific buttoned up stuffy way. . I kind of talk like a

02:46 person. Ok. And, with all the corny things I say

02:51 sometimes to amuse myself. Ok. , to amuse you, it's ok

02:55 laugh. Ok? You don't have be loosen up. That's what I'm

02:59 to say. Lighten up. Yes, you should at worst.

03:05 ac in this course. Right. should, I don't make it overly

03:10 , but some of this material by is at times can be a little

03:16 , not overly so, but I to make sense of it for

03:20 Ok. So if you do certain I'll talk about and how to

03:24 there's no reason to at minimum make scene. Of course, it just

03:28 . And that's generally what most people in this course. I've looked over

03:32 last 15 years and the, average overall average tends to be around

03:39 , the final overall average about 72 in that, right, consistently,

03:46 . So you should be able to that. There's no reason to,

03:51 , um I mean, again, first, the first exam is always

03:54 adjustment, you're gonna probably go with , you know, in terms of

03:58 and you'll get a result and you be happy, you may not be

04:01 , it may be somewhere in So that's what I mean, it's

04:04 evolve, right? Um Do you, you can't afford to if

04:10 consistently getting, uh, I'll say , you have the homeworks, you

04:17 quizzes, you have clicker points, ? These are all meant to do

04:23 that give you points. Ok? That's 32% of the grade. That

04:30 is not that difficult, right? the quizzes aren't on canvas, they're

04:34 pro third. You can have all friends over and do them at the

04:38 time, whatever. OK. Uh that 32% you should max that out

04:44 wise. OK. That the exams if you're making hundreds and everything

04:49 it doesn't mean it does not equate hundreds on exams. I say that

04:52 now. OK. The exams are whole different thing, right? It's

04:56 likely more stressful situation right? Then these other things. So,

05:01 so if anything I'm here to help content, OK, obviously. So

05:07 don't do research. I'm an instructional . Research stays along behind.

05:14 and so, uh, although I run the lab but that's not really

05:18 . But anyway, so, don't, uh, I'm gonna mention

05:23 things here in a couple of So we'll go through this.

05:25 So one of the things, in the course of the semester,

05:29 both follow this. Right. So not gonna shave the rest of the

05:33 . Right. So, we're gonna how, how we can achieve me

05:37 to, um, to, anybody know whos ZZ Top is?

05:42 . I figured it'd be a deafness on that one. Ok.

05:45 from Houston actually. Um, so looking to get something like that.

05:50 . So we're gonna see again. can laugh. It's OK. Be

05:53 . All right. So, uh gonna see how far I get.

05:57 . So maybe I'll make it a if I say for extra credit,

06:01 will it, where will they get ? Then everybody's gonna be in on

06:04 . Ok. All right. uh adding this course, of

06:08 this open spring in the spring, lots of space. Um, because

06:13 two sections, plenty of openings in and then the four o'clock.

06:18 the, uh, so you just yourself, uh, you can do

06:21 until next week, next Tuesday. lab people and people want to do

06:26 , do you have to have lab the same time we're taking this

06:29 No. Ok. You do, can take the lab separately, but

06:33 have to have had credit for this before taking that. Ok.

06:39 labs are full except for there's like sections. I think that have

06:44 of course, it depends on your if you can fit that.

06:48 um, if you need to, have the option of taking it at

06:52 , because this, this, this along with intro bio and A MP

06:59 , these kind of one and two courses are all consistent with community

07:04 right? So the same 21 21 21 are offered at HCC, the

07:13 Star System, et cetera. Uh TSU PB, right? All

07:18 schools in the area offer those same and it completely transfers over to

07:24 OK. Now, what I don't is I know, um depending on

07:28 program you're in and what year you're , uh they may not allow,

07:33 may not allow you to finish like final course at, at elsewhere other

07:39 U of H, it just So anyway, you have, you

07:42 have options uh if you can't take here. OK. Both for lab

07:45 lecture. OK. Um email. if you email me uh spring is

07:50 as bad as the fall, uh the two lecture courses I teach are

07:55 2321. But um but you put least put the time in there 11

08:00 versus 4 p.m. OK? So you are gonna be 11 a.m. Obviously,

08:04 I do answer emails pretty promptly um I get them, uh, so

08:11 a 24 hour rule. Ok, , excluding weekends, but Monday through

08:16 . Um So if you, if it's been 24 hours and you

08:19 heard back from me then consider that didn't get through. Ok, let

08:24 just re email, but I'm, pretty much respond within as soon as

08:29 get it, if not a couple hours within a couple of hours.

08:32 , uh so keep that in mind and just, and just communicate with

08:36 through the uh email. Ok. the email I sent out the mass

08:42 , I'll sent out to everybody last this week and the week before through

08:47 , through that portal. Ok. Now, uh let's see.

08:53 so last fall we began, the is new for us. Probably,

08:58 you're all familiar with it by Unless you're new on this semester.

09:03 CTAP programs. Remember you pay a fee and you get all your materials

09:08 in all your courses. It's all digital format. Um CASA and

09:14 this the CT a thing, you be getting emails from your age in

09:18 of book and, or bookstore. where you want to uh get,

09:22 the, I guess access codes or , however they do it.

09:26 Uh CASA, so AAA change uh which began last fall is only

09:32 the sense that it's now called Casa . OK? Because it integrates with

09:38 . OK? So I can transfer from canvas site over to or from

09:43 CASA site over the canvas. So uh there's like three Casa testing

09:48 . Um Again, everything I'm telling here today is you can find in

09:51 syllabus for more details. OK? All right. So be aware,

09:57 I put this in uh because it from a life standpoint, you can't

10:03 to be clueless about everything. What do I mean by that?

10:08 , things like knowing when assignments and dates are when exams occur, when

10:12 are ok. Um I literally have people if it's a spring semester on

10:19 1st, they'll say I didn't know had homework assignments to do in this

10:23 . You can't, you can't do . You can't live out in the

10:26 like that. OK? The world eat you up. OK. So

10:30 aware, know what's going on. . And believe me, I send

10:34 two emails a week to everybody in class making you aware of that.

10:38 multiple places on canvas where it's posted due dates. Um And I mentioned

10:43 before each lecture. So you can't know when something is due on when

10:48 is happening. So be aware, ? Do not be clueless.

10:54 Uh I forgot is absolutely not an . So that equals no makeup,

11:00 ? But whatever it is, it's back to 0.1. No one

11:04 is happening. Ok. Yes, course, there are valid excuses.

11:09 blew out on the way to go the class testing center. Uh,

11:12 have, I'm ill, whatever. . As long as it's documented,

11:16 problem. Ok. Um, digital . Clicker subscription. Know how to

11:23 this stuff, right. You, I said, I think you probably

11:27 have emailed you regarding the c tap if you're in that uh go to

11:31 bookstore, um uh information is in syllabus, right? So be aware

11:37 know how to do this stuff. . There's also people that will end

11:40 at the uh be, it'll be 1 and they have never seen their

11:44 points on canvas and now they're where's my clicker points at?

11:49 Don't be clueless. Be aware. right. Look at your grades all

11:52 time on canvas, right? You do that. I, you

11:56 I'm a new student. So, either. Ok, figure it

12:00 Right. That's why the syllabus is long. There's so much information there

12:03 , to, to cover any question may have, right? So use

12:07 right. Um Know the grade So we'll move through that briefly.

12:13 know what the grade is comprised It goes back to not to knowing

12:16 , yeah, we do have homework that we do have clicker points,

12:20 cetera, right? So know what grade components are and always check,

12:24 every week your, your grades on , uh, a to make sure

12:28 there. Uh, b that they're . Ok. So, uh,

12:34 because it's obviously your responsibility to know stuff. Ok. You shouldn't come

12:38 on May 1 going. I didn't we had homework. I don't see

12:40 quicker points. Blah, blah, . Ok. All these things are

12:44 . Right. So, get ahead it now, right? Because not

12:48 my class. I know everybody's here other classes besides mine where there's similar

12:53 due. So you gotta get it sorted out. All right. Uh

12:57 don't assume anything. OK? Um know it or if you're not sure

13:06 , ask question, don't assume OK? Um OK. The All

13:14 , as I mentioned, the syllabus very long. So to kind of

13:17 you out, there's a table of so you can just look at the

13:20 if you want information on, just to that page. OK. Um

13:26 else? OK. Canvas. So go through, just go through

13:30 if you haven't already, just click everything that's in there. So you're

13:34 of what's, what, what's going and where it's at. OK.

13:38 particularly and so the, the the home by default goes to all

13:43 modules when you click on the home or when you enter log in,

13:47 is what you'll see right now. seeing more stuff um than you normally

13:52 because this is instructive view. But, um, but you're gonna

13:57 . So the, the um and something here to help you out,

14:00 ? Support materials. Um Actually let just go here to the real

14:05 Here we go. Ok. So to guides? All right, how

14:09 register your clickers? Um, or smart work. I'm sorry. Uh

14:14 Tools Point Solutions. That's your clicker . That's where you're gonna register

14:19 Ok. Um, you have to to the bookstore, I think to

14:22 your access codes if you're in the program. Um, syllabus do so

14:28 , syllabus due dates, the all is a sheet that has everything

14:32 on it. Ok. Uh It's brand some of this is redundant,

14:37 I figured with terms of due dates whatnot assignments more is better.

14:42 So you don't forget stuff. Uh . Time to teams, office

14:47 right? So office hours, Thursday 1130 to 1230. Ok.

14:53 , you can click on this. think you probably click on the in

14:55 app that of course you show up . Uh, but 1130 to

14:59 that's, this is Thursday should be , Thursday. So Tuesday, Thursday

15:03 to 1230 I realize that's not gonna everybody. So if you, if

15:07 need a different day or time that , uh, just email me.

15:12 . And, and you can come to face perfectly fine uh virtual is

15:19 it will be virtual as well. you have both options. OK.

15:23 the thing is it's first come first if you show up, um You

15:27 have to wait if it's virtual. know, there's a lobby there,

15:31 have to wait before I let you . So, or if somebody is

15:33 person uh in the office, so may be a way, but generally

15:39 not that long. Ok. and generally lots of people don't come

15:43 office hours anyway. So I'm sure you want to come, you won't

15:46 a, you won't have an Uh And I'm in uh where you

15:49 the labs in STL 222. Um Other things here are two different

15:56 . If you want to explore that is tutoring for this course. Uh

16:00 you can look at those options. Let's see. Ok, check up

16:04 smart work. So when we get smart work in a couple of

16:07 that's the homework. The only thing remember there is access, access,

16:12 work within canvas through, through right? Don't go outside if you

16:18 that. It tends to be problems like grade transfers and things like

16:22 Ok. So do smart work whether in C tap or not solely through

16:28 . Ok. And you can see the, the homeworks that are popped

16:32 already. Ok. Um Weekly quizzes unit quizzes. So uh these aren't

16:38 up yet. Um But anyway, is where you'll access, right?

16:41 then the um lecture videos, So lecture videos, uh everything in

16:46 you see on the screen and here recorded. OK? They, they

16:51 are um uh they're sent somewhere to up uh processed and uploaded. It

16:56 takes after class you should have access this class you should have access this

17:02 the afternoon. So, um it doesn't take that long to post these

17:08 . Uh And it will take you , there's nothing here obviously yet,

17:12 this is what's called the video point . And what they do is they

17:16 what they call index the lecture. that means is they have like 78

17:20 time blocks and so kind of whether are natural divisions in the lecture.

17:25 you can, you can go, think you do keyword search if you

17:28 to, you can do other But if you're just, you only

17:32 to see the lecture just for a topic, you can do that,

17:36 ? That's the point of the index to make it more efficient for

17:40 OK. So you may not need see the whole thing. All

17:43 you just need to see a part a section and you can search very

17:46 and do that. Yeah. Um right. So let's go back

17:53 Uh Do do, do OK. So what you have available is,

18:00 this course is in four units, exams. Each exam covers a

18:04 The, the final here is not . It's not even called the final

18:08 . It's called exam four, So just each exam covers a quarter

18:13 the course. Ok. So, so you know, one is available

18:17 you and what you got. And here we are the ebook links,

18:21 ? So if you go to the through C tap or not, you'll

18:25 , you'll get an access code. but you know, this is where

18:29 can access the textbook. OK. So you see the chapters that are

18:34 , uh There's lecture notes, uh review is already up. These questions

18:38 think about are kind of just open questions. There's no answer sheet for

18:42 , the kind of things to think in terms of content to know.

18:46 OK, lecture notes and then also you'll see in here will be uh

18:53 OK. So obviously you have electron there, that's what we cover in

18:57 . But I will think of stuff think of maybe a different way to

19:02 a certain topic to hopefully make it to understand those kind of changes or

19:07 it's something else I just want to for whatever reason. Um If it's

19:12 the point there is, if it's immediately available to you, it will

19:17 . So anything you see on that will be, you'll have access

19:22 Ok? And again, 95% of stuff you already you will have access

19:26 before a class. It's just so those couple of things I think you

19:28 to change up. You will, you will after class. And so

19:32 for those in for unit one stuff here. You'll say like extra slides

19:38 blah, blah lecture, right? that's where you'll find that and the

19:41 questions quicker questions as well. So find those what I call extra slides

19:46 in the respective unit folder. So be aware of that as

19:50 Um I think that's in terms of . So of course, uh I

19:55 mentioned the point solutions over on the menu over here point solution. So

20:01 where you register your clicker and the that come up when people don't see

20:06 points is because they thought they had active subscription and they didn't. So

20:11 sure you have the two green check . Ok. Uh maybe three,

20:15 forget. But um and then so I have an active current subscription

20:22 then um when you register, I you want to register with, you

20:27 want to register with the uh And that's because it that's necessary to

20:34 uh transfer your grades from the point to canvas. So that email,

20:40 that email account is not right, where you, you end up not

20:44 your points, right? So make you do that properly. Ok.

20:49 If you're using a, uh a that a, using a clicker,

20:55 registered it, but no active the points are there. They just

20:59 show up until you accurate the So if you're using a clicker and

21:05 don't have an access subscription, you've it. But you know, and

21:09 not seeing your points, it's because not active, but the points are

21:12 . It's kind of hidden when you it. Boom, they'll show

21:15 Ok. Um What else? So . So obviously click on that,

21:19 know, that will show you your grades as I, I,

21:22 say something about cameras, the canvas here in a minute. Ok.

21:27 so, and so basically what you're gonna see all this stuff here,

21:31 eyeball with a slash through it. what I get. But you'll have

21:35 point solutions registration module syllabus. So, um all right, as

21:45 , C tap, right? Is , this is the book we use

21:47 edition. Um The um if you out, I forget what the opt

21:53 date is. But um this is , the and again, this is

21:57 the syllabus, I don't need to it down. So this is the

22:00 text if you want to get get it outside of CT A.

22:05 uh This is how you do Ok. Uh Again, access a

22:10 work through canvas, whether you're in A or not do it through

22:14 Less headaches, great components. So 32% comes from the non exam

22:21 . Ok. So obviously that's where wanna, you wanna maximize points on

22:26 these things. But it is certainly the, the quizzes the homeworks,

22:31 Clipper grades. That's your, you , that that's the easier path to

22:36 out your points. Ok. Um there's two extra credit opportunities. One

22:41 based on your different grade. one you fill out the course

22:46 you get some extra credit. Um, ok, the, all

22:50 exams are taken at cost. one of the testing centers,

22:54 so be aware of three garrison is the spot you go. CBB is

23:00 and I think a, ah, open. I'm not sure though,

23:03 just make sure, you know which you're going to. Ok.

23:08 so if you haven't registered or ready do so, uh, you can

23:13 time slots for exams two weeks. CASA opens the scheduler two weeks before

23:17 exam date. Uh, again, make you aware of these things.

23:22 , there are no drop exams right again. Going back to being,

23:26 aware, right? This is the . This is the, the,

23:31 components by which everybody is, everybody judged, so to speak.

23:37 Um, it's not gonna change on 1, everything is changed up now

23:42 where exams are dropped and this is and blah, blah, blah.

23:45 I give you like five more extra things. No, this is it

23:48 . This is what we have is gonna change. That's it.

23:54 Um All right. Uh OK. Weekly quizzes. Uh there's two

24:01 so the weekly ones are shorter, five or 10 questions, six or

24:06 average, so to speak. Uh minutes to do those, the unit

24:09 are longer. They become like a before an exam, more comprehensive kind

24:14 give you a feel. And all these cameras quizzes are made up of

24:20 exam questions. So you're gonna So the value of the quizzes is

24:24 see, OK, what are the of questions I'm going to see?

24:27 the type that you'll see there and uh quicker questions as well that you

24:32 class are the same kind of style see in the um on the

24:37 Ok? Uh Again, it's there's no lockdown browser for this.

24:41 just you can have your book whatever, right? Take it,

24:45 it however you like, OK. one thing is, and you have

24:49 for, for these quizzes, there's four day period. It's a Friday

24:54 Monday, you had to take Ok, when you start,

24:58 So if you start Friday at 8 you'll have for a weekly quiz until

25:06 to finish it, right? So can't save a spot and then come

25:11 on Sunday and complete it. once you start clock ticking.

25:16 Um, what else? Uh, use a mobile app that everybody used

25:22 semester. So I think the handheld are long gone. But,

25:27 it's, it's also the cheapest option the mobile app. Ok. So

25:31 you need, you can just download mobile app from the, you

25:33 Android or Apple Store. Um, then you get the subscription,

25:39 through the bookstore. Ok. Or think you can get it online at

25:43 Point solution site. Uh, so , uh, so the cell

25:47 everybody has a cell phone more or . So just bring it with you

25:49 then you'll have your, um, ready to go. I, I've

25:53 changed this instead of four making it . Yeah. And I'll make the

25:59 in the syllabus. So, All right, six free days.

26:05 , six day limit here. All . So, uh, whatever,

26:14 , whether it's an excused absence or dog, ate my homework absence,

26:20 doesn't matter. Ok. You got of those right to cover a day

26:25 you don't do clickers. Ok. which means you don't need to email

26:32 . I don't, it doesn't matter you're, it's, it's a free

26:35 , don't worry about it. And you can't accumulate these things.

26:40 . It's, it's, it's whether excused or unexcused absence according

26:44 uh, guidelines it's covered here. , don't need to worry about

26:48 Ok. Um, so that means , um, at the end of

26:52 semester, the quicker grade will have six lowest grades will be dropped.

26:58 . So the sixth lowest, whether a zero because he didn't show up

27:02 day or whatever, six lowest grades dropped. Ok, for everybody.

27:07 . And there's something like 20 two , class days I think we

27:12 So, um, so six days more or less three weeks,

27:16 So, uh registration. So I that already, just make sure you

27:22 an active subscription. Uh But yeah, that's home school is.

27:28 . So next uh right, I mentioned this and if you're in ac

27:34 A, it's covered as well, are covered. So go to the

27:37 uh in the fall, they had schedule by if your name is

27:41 this or some, some criteria, it's name or ID number that you

27:46 on this day, anybody aware if had the same thing again in the

27:52 , a specific date anyway, you or may not. But bottom line

27:55 you go to the bookstore. Uh ok. Canvas. Great.

27:59 I had a, you know, was a person that emailed me about

28:02 and I hadn't responded, but here's I'm gonna answer your question, which

28:06 an excellent question. OK. The great by that. I mean,

28:12 calculated current rate to that point. . I saw last semester that it

28:21 always consistent. Ok. So whatever grade canvas is posting there, don't

28:29 it as that's absolutely correct. Do your own calculation. Ok.

28:37 working with canvas people to, to get it consistent until it

28:45 Of course, I'll tell you, until then rely on your own

28:49 Now, the grades posted. and here's the formula and I don't

28:53 about writing it down. I'll, post these slides will be posted.

28:57 , uh the calculation is easy, follow the steps on page into the

29:01 . Um So remember that collectively the , the quizzes are 32%.

29:07 But depending on when you calculate your , the variable is, have you

29:12 one exam? No exams yet? exam, two exams, three exams

29:16 some the what you're going to divide is gonna change, right?

29:21 uh if you've got after exam you want to calculate your grade,

29:24 sum everything up and divide by 0.49 etcetera. Ok. Again, I'll

29:29 this uh but it's an easy calculation do. Ok. Um What is

29:35 ? Ok. So when you click the little grades tab on that left

29:40 , the canvas quiz scores are Ok, because you're just taking a

29:43 quiz and boom, the grade pops the clicker scores for each data that

29:47 up are accurate. The exam scores accurate. Ok. So those loot

29:53 are all correct. Ok. So just um the calculation when canvas does

30:00 , it always doesn't consistent. So just bottom line is do your

30:04 calculation. OK? Um But if get to a point where after working

30:09 these canvas people that I'm confident that grade being shown is accurate, I'll

30:15 you know. OK. But until again, it goes back to don't

30:19 , OK, know it, do own calculation. OK? Um And

30:26 work grades of course. So these the smart works quicker, scores automatically

30:31 . Ok. And I don't do manipulations. Ok. I'm just hitting

30:36 button and going transfer to campus. what I'm doing, right.

30:40 uh so as it says here, sure you know, when these things

30:44 transferred, they can also be the , right? Maybe it doesn't show

30:49 . So check what you have on . Is it showing up on

30:53 Right? Check on the smart work . I see my grade. Is

30:57 showing up on canvas? So just be aware of those things.

31:02 . Um Because you don't want to at the end of the semester,

31:04 think you have this grade when it's maybe not that great. And

31:08 that's I can, that would be a good thing. Ok. So

31:13 keep on top of this. as I just said, ok,

31:19 let's see. All right. Um continue. So yeah, this is

31:24 thing about using the correct email when do this. That's, that's what

31:28 cause issues if you don't see your because it can't properly sync with canvas

31:33 you don't have the right account uh that um click or score. All

31:39 . So uh for the most um uh so you, you will

31:46 , I don't know, usually 4 5, maybe more questions.

31:53 per session. So if you're, you just come in and you use

31:57 clicker and you respond right or wrong whatever to 70% of the questions you

32:04 the one attendance point. Ok? if we have 10 questions and you

32:12 seven, you get the point. there's 10 questions and you leave

32:17 you only answer five, you don't the attendance point. Ok? So

32:22 requires the 70% threshold, ok? In terms of what they call performance

32:29 , uh most of these are two right or wrong. There's a few

32:33 there when that are maybe one Ok? Um Usually those when I

32:37 that it's on those flipped class days I'll mention that in a second.

32:40 ? But for the most part, questions are in the um to right

32:45 wrong, but there are some that one for uh one for incorrect two

32:50 correct. Ok. Uh great. that ok? Um Oh yeah,

32:57 . Oh, that's what you see here, right? So here we're

33:00 do one and clicker is not gonna until the 29th. So you got

33:06 , you got the rest of this or next week to get all that

33:09 away. Ok. So for now point of clicker points is really uh

33:16 that, you know how it works it's working for you. I will

33:20 the points um so that you can confident that that that's working. So

33:26 just from now until the 29th, like, ok, is my clicker

33:29 , am I using it? Am I seeing my points?

33:32 that's the old sole purpose, It won't count against you. So

33:36 you don't have a clicker until the , don't worry about it. Is

33:39 gonna count until the 29th? So, um do not share the

33:47 with people outside that's violation of academic . Ok. So why should they

33:52 credit? They're not here, So just do your own thing.

33:58 . All right. Flip class All right. So what that

34:03 Yeah, flip flip, classic kind a buzzword and uh academia. But

34:09 a um, it's really a it's kind of to break things up

34:13 little bit here. Two is to you the chance to, so you're

34:18 get a video beforehand a week before where you, your goal is to

34:26 . OK, I'm gonna, here's material, here's a video, here's

34:29 notes, book, blah, blah. I'm going to master attempt

34:33 master the particular topic in question. . And then you come to class

34:39 the class is very clicker question OK. A bunch of clicker questions

34:46 we're gonna go through and kind of the discussion around the clipper questions,

34:51 questions you may have, right? a little bit different, there'll be

34:53 clicker questions on, on the flip things. Um OK. And so

35:01 , uh of course, prepare for ahead of time, right? Do

35:05 work first. So it's kind of , in a way it's a little

35:07 of um an evaluation of how your method is working. Ok.

35:14 uh there was like five, maybe of those days. Ok. Um

35:20 . Uh Any questions at this I think it's been rattling off.

35:24 have any questions about it, Another thing is, yes, the

35:31 course is offered at four o'clock. if you miss 11 o'clock and you

35:36 to four o'clock, that's fine. But the clicker points won't work,

35:42 ? So if your clicker, if enrolled in this class, only the

35:45 work for this class because the point divides up both classes. So you

35:51 be able to use your clicker or can, but you won't be able

35:54 get credit for your clicker in if go to the four o'clock class.

35:59 ok. Exams, makeups, general . So really two things is,

36:04 be, let me know if you , ahead of time, it's even

36:09 . But, you know, stuff , of course and uh just let

36:13 know as soon as you can within hours and gotta be a valid

36:17 What's a valid excuse? If you at the last, look at the

36:21 toward the end, I literally copied paste of the uh excused absence

36:26 So that will tell you what's an absence but the usual stuff, you

36:30 , illness, you know, um , uh uh some kind of incident

36:36 your car. What have you just document that. That's all.

36:41 . I love to trust everybody 100% their word. But you know,

36:45 uh is that whether it's a doctor's or what have you that uh if

36:50 don't have um health insurance, which not unusual, you still can get

36:56 , care. Um My clinics around , I googled basically free clinics and

37:02 a whole list. So if you have health insurance and that's an issue

37:07 it is for many people these then you have that option. There's

37:09 of uh clinics, there's also U H which charges less, I think

37:14 the usual doctor's office. But in case, you do have options.

37:18 . Um, they dispute. So the grades are posted, you get

37:22 week to say, ah, this ridiculous. I don't like this,

37:25 , blah, blah, that's Ok. Um, but when the

37:29 posted next week. Don't wait until 1st to dispute it. Ok.

37:34 late. Uh, academic honesty Well, we don't have,

37:39 we don't write papers in here you know, the other stuff

37:43 you know, you can use your and whatnot and friends what have

37:46 uh, exams is the only thing just falls, uh, effects.

37:50 so, uh, cost, of they have proper walking around, any

37:53 of incident that occurs, whatever it , they'll document it and I'll get

37:57 of it. So, um but really never had an issue uh with

38:01 taking exam at CASA and cheating or . So, but you know,

38:06 be aware of that. OK. All right. So this course

38:10 Is, is uh four sections, units I call it and then over

38:15 unit structure pretty much the same Obviously, the content differs and so

38:20 of last uh semester kind of changes up a little bit in terms of

38:24 order, order material. So, uh intro hasn't changed. That's always

38:30 first thing obviously. So a little about intro, then we go into

38:34 . OK. Again, it all on people's background. Some people have

38:39 had organic chemistry. Um Not that have to have that you don't.

38:45 ? But obviously if you've had those , you grasp it a little bit

38:48 , right? But I try to it obviously pa palatable uh for

38:55 OK? But I want to put up front because it basically is influences

39:03 . OK? Um Because later on talk about growth, bacteria grow and

39:08 that's all. So their metabolism, they can use and how they get

39:11 and blah, blah, blah. it it affects the cell functioning of

39:17 synthesis DNA replication. There's moving uh a lot of the chapter three

39:22 which is about the functions of a cell. So, you know,

39:26 really the the for us humans, know, it's all about metabolism.

39:32 ? Um So we're gonna learn kind the nuts and bolts of that

39:36 Uh an extension of that then is and water cycles tolerance. Um And

39:43 uh that's kind of a more ecological a little bit there. OK.

39:49 applying kind of some metabolic principles to ecological uh phenomena. OK. Uh

39:58 know, two is really about the microbe cell structure pro care and this

40:03 is bacteria viruses for the most 99.9% bacteria viruses because you you in

40:11 other courses you take, you you look at um a lot of

40:16 it's the animal cells that are your things, right? So here,

40:21 we strictly look at her period viruses. And if we look at

40:27 cells, it's really just kind of a comparison for comparison of something that

40:33 um so this is all about. structure function of pro periods, uh

40:38 about viruses, et cetera and culture and growth. OK. Uh

40:43 is kind of metro genetics. So at uh different aspects there. So

40:48 you're kind of, we do a bit of a overview at the beginning

40:52 of the basics of what you learn intro bio, right? Not,

40:57 a great length of time, just little bit on things like protein synthesis

41:02 replication. So if you're kind you know, maybe you need to

41:06 yourself on that. Uh But I go into details of those processes,

41:10 it's helpful to kind of remember those . Um The last thing is really

41:14 we talk about medical microbiology. So immune system and pathogens and then when

41:22 finish up with different microbial diseases, . And that kind of integrates all

41:27 that. So the pathogen, how it cause disease? How do you

41:31 it? Blah, blah, OK. And so um OK.

41:37 here, so let's if you haven't put that, that we will do

41:40 quick question here. So we'll test see your pick. But here's a

41:46 I have a specific um grade. me I'll come back to that.

41:52 me back up here. I have specific grade I must make in this

41:58 . My life depends on it. need this grade in order to

42:01 say affirmation, maintain a scholarship or this does or does not apply to

42:08 . Ok. So, especially in spring semester graduation coming up, that's

42:18 be an important thing, getting a grade in this course. And

42:27 um, and you saw this thing the thing timer pops up at 60

42:32 , you know, depending on how you gotta read. I may pause

42:36 the middle of something like that. me catch up and kind of.

42:42 let's go ahead and wind down Mhm. Ok. Ok.

42:56 I figured that, um, so the point here of this question

43:01 , um, if, if it , if, I mean, literally

43:07 , if, if making a specific grade because that specific letter grade is

43:15 that will get you the GPA that allow you to graduate whatever.

43:20 this spring is typically graduation is I think that's the motivator.

43:25 So, um, what generally And I'm sure everybody knows this,

43:31 will not see most of you or from most of you until about May

43:38 because then it's like you see your and you panic and you go,

43:41 my God, what am I gonna ? Right? Can you give me

43:43 points to raise my grade? So can graduate? Can you give me

43:47 points or 20 points or whatever? my response will be and what you

43:55 ? No. Ok. Why? I'm an A hole? No.

44:01 . Because a we're all in the boat Right. We're all evaluated by

44:08 same components, right? Quizzes, , blah, blah, blah.

44:13 . So, as it should uh if I give so and so

44:19 points to graduate rightfully. So everybody should be mad as, you know

44:25 ? You can't do that. Everybody the same way. Ok. So

44:32 goes back to weeks, 1 to of the semester. That's when I

44:37 help you. Ok? If their is so GD important to you and

44:43 gotta have it, your butt should in my office twice a week for

44:47 14 weeks. If you know you with material. OK? First exam

44:53 the evaluation. Take a good hard at that exam score on the first

44:59 is, and trust me, it's the questions every faculty member gets that

45:04 . I didn't do well because the were no, it's not.

45:09 And the particular refrain is always I studied and I studied and

45:12 I made this OK while you're studying crap. OK? You gotta change

45:17 up. OK? So take a look at the exam, first exam

45:21 . If you don't like it, gotta change something because the very definition

45:25 insanity to do the same thing over , you'll get the same result.

45:30 ? So again, if it's really to you, your butt needs to

45:33 in my office twice a week for 1st 14 weeks. OK?

45:38 but those sessions aren't me just regurgitating previous day's lecture. No, I

45:44 be in there asking you questions. you need to come prepared because that's

45:48 you're gonna learn it. Right. not gonna learn it. I just

45:51 off again. Ok. So give take. Ok. And I've gotten

45:58 to the few that have heeded that . Um, generally have emailed me

46:05 the end of the semester. Wow. I, I really didn't

46:07 what I was doing, study wise when I did what you told me

46:10 , I improved my score of 20 points. Ok. So it

46:15 work. I can, I save emails so I can, I can

46:18 you those to prove it. But uh again, it's II I

46:23 you can lead a horse to you can't make him drink so I

46:26 only do so much, you it's gonna be up to you.

46:29 . So, but there are two as I mentioned around campus. Um

46:34 the point is if you didn't do in the first exam, get

46:39 it's mind boggling to sit there and a, get another 40 or 50

46:42 whatever, right? Get help, ? And that's what I can

46:47 All right. All right. So wise, um there is, I

46:52 give any, everybody the same one fits all answer, right? Because

46:57 learns differently, which is why you uh a lot of stuff on canvas

47:01 terms of whether there's lecture notes, there's also animations and there's other

47:05 So because people learn stuff differently. . So, what I can only

47:10 is kind of give you a general . And one of those is to

47:14 , do, do, do preliminary before coming to class, right.

47:19 the relevant pages in the book, little lecture notes. Right? You're

47:24 expected to master it obviously, you , but, you know, do

47:28 have an idea of what's going on class that day? I start talking

47:33 it and you go, OK, remember reading about that blah,

47:35 blah, maybe I have a question it. OK. So do that

47:40 . You don't need to memorize OK? Um You know, there's

47:47 stuff to memorize. Sure, I it but trying to get away from

47:50 much of that. OK. More more of the big picture concepts,

47:54 kind of thing. OK. Always yourself this. Now, the answer

47:58 this question is not, well, read the book so I know it

48:04 , OK, you need a mechanism evaluate how that studying is going,

48:12 ? And you know, the mechanism not, well, I made hundreds

48:15 my blank on my canvas, quizzes my homeworks. I made hundreds.

48:20 not the mechanism. OK? It's way for you to, yeah,

48:23 helps. Certainly do those things. you really need to know what makes

48:28 think you know, this is, , um, you pick a topic

48:34 , uh, you go, How much do I know about

48:36 Ok. I've just studied this stuff the previous 24 hours book. Look

48:41 the videos, whatever. Ok. you go, ok, write

48:48 write, write, write down the on your sheet of paper. You

48:51 . Ok. What do I know this? And if you're sitting there

48:53 30 minutes and it's a blank sheet paper that you just wasted the previous

48:58 hours studying because something is not. . Right. So that's, that's

49:01 identify what you know and don't know do this stuff early because then you

49:05 get help, right? Um So of the thing. So read the

49:11 , get the materials, re text , lecture notes and lecture. Um

49:15 can download the notes, bring it you afterwards. Look at the video

49:20 , OK? Maybe you want to stuff to it. You don't have

49:23 view the whole thing, maybe just of it you want to see.

49:27 you can use the indexing feature that's the video points. OK? Review

49:32 , do the home homework, take weekly quiz. So um you may

49:38 to repeat some of these things. But this question here can be answered

49:43 doing these become concept maths or mind or there's other terms I just call

49:49 , you know, pick a a , right? So synthesize the information

49:53 your own words. OK. Um so how do you do this?

49:58 , one example here is I just a random topic, bacterial growth.

50:03 . So presumably before you do this studied, right? You've gone through

50:07 the lecture video, the notes, notes, blah, blah,

50:09 You go OK. I'm ready. do this. And so you're doing

50:14 exercise in a vacuum. It's pencil and paper, that's it.

50:20 else. All right, if you to answer the question, what makes

50:22 think? I know this and you're get an answer right in front of

50:24 eyeballs by doing this exercise, So you go, OK. What

50:30 I know about this? It could words, sentences, fragments of the

50:34 , pictures, diagrams, label it , you know, it put it

50:39 . It's not meant to be a double space type document to turn

50:43 It's supposed to be ugly. But do that and you see in

50:48 of your eyes, what you know ? OK, then you go.

50:51 . Well, that's right. That's . That's missing blah, blah,

50:54 , fix it up, try to it again and then proceed to the

50:58 topic. So that's, that's gonna you confidence that you know it right

51:01 doing this. If you see a page after 30 minutes, that's a

51:06 flag, right? You need OK? So, you know,

51:11 , this is just my example. when you do b material growth.

51:14 are the things we'll talk about, ? And how much you, and

51:18 can go make more arrows and you draw a picture if you need to

51:21 , or whatever. OK. You how much is on there, the

51:26 of how much you know about Um, so, and again,

51:30 is an exercise where you're just copying of a book that's totally useless.

51:33 not gonna learn anything you need So this is an exercise in

51:38 Do I really know this or I'm fooling myself? Ok. Take it

51:42 that. This is not about making a, it's about, I really

51:46 an honest answer of how this studying is going. Ok? And that

51:50 tell you. Ok. So, , ok, but again, you

51:56 , you have, you're stumbling, having issues and that's when you come

52:00 office hours, ok? Or arrange if you can't make office hours,

52:04 for a different time and, or . Ok. So before we do

52:09 , um any questions or anything, . Remember stuff you gotta do when

52:16 leave here, you haven't already, ? Click your license, uh digital

52:23 , right? Smart work. Um canvas site, know where everything's

52:29 do those things. OK. Uh the only content stuff we'll start on

52:36 stuff next week. But let's do question. OK. And um let's

52:45 , I'm looking at this, I looked at the slide in three

52:48 so I'm sure I can answer Mhm. Mhm. Yeah.

53:33 Let me pause a little bit of to do here and fy,

53:38 uh, ex uh, questions of this many choices you're only gonna see

53:42 paper questions. I'm not gonna have questions with choices A through X.

53:48 . Uh, three or four 04 five at the most. Um,

53:53 not this way. All right. , uh, wind down here.

54:08 . Yep. If you entered h are correct. Ok. So,

54:14 , I, it's all ahead. , so we'll start with chapter one

54:20 cover some of these concepts. uh, so get your stuff squared

54:26 folks and, uh, I'll email probably again on, uh, tomorrow

54:33 next Monday, Monday, Thursday in emails. How we go on,

5999:59
