00:00 Hi to everyone. Um I'm Doctor . This is what we're gonna call

00:05 orientation video uh for uh Comparative So Comparative Anatomy, you see has

00:12 designation, Biology 4397. That simply a special topics course. Uh and

00:18 next fall, um this course will have a real designation. I think

00:22 gonna be 4326. But anyway, so we meet in the science

00:28 It's s 119 and uh we meet 1130 to 1 o'clock. Um So

00:35 class we'll see is gonna be designated such a way that it's gonna be

00:39 attendance will be required. Uh If want to come and meet me during

00:43 hours, I have office hours right class from 10 to 1115. Um

00:48 you can't meet during that time, you can always email me and we

00:52 set an appointment after class um to or whatever, but my office is

00:58 22 21 G. The easiest way get in contact me is uh with

01:02 is through my email C Wayne at dot edu. I would recommend not

01:06 to contact me uh using uh So let's just kind of go through

01:14 this class is and uh what is of you. Um Some of the

01:19 I sent via the announcement, but is more of a kind of a

01:23 overview. So uh this course was set up for the purposes of fulfilling

01:30 anatomy requirement, mostly for pre dental . But also it's uh kind of

01:34 important cornerstone class for biology. And typically, what I'll see students in

01:40 class are those who are, are the pre dental students. But um

01:46 know, I will see some of all who are just here because you

01:49 to learn a little bit more about organisms. And so what I try

01:53 do is if you want to learn , I think it needs to be

01:56 . And so I hope you're taking class because it's, it's interesting to

02:01 . There's some sort of interest and I want you to be engaged with

02:05 material. I don't want you to come in here and hopefully the information

02:09 flow over you and you'll walk out something stuck. So you need to

02:13 some degree of interaction. And so be successful at this, you need

02:18 be someone who knows how to self . In other words, don't just

02:24 on instructors to give you information. uh I'm trying to get you to

02:30 how to be a learner on your . And so you're going to have

02:34 access content that is specifically directed to . You need to be able to

02:40 those ideas, ideas and really good are good teachers. So you will

02:45 engaging with others and finding solutions to and to problems so that everyone is

02:51 of learning together and teaching each other learning together. And so ultimately,

02:57 be successful, whatever it is that do in the future, whatever profession

03:01 go into, whether it's to be into the sciences, going into medical

03:06 or anywhere else. Heck if you're into business, you need to be

03:09 to um take information, discern what's of it, dis dissect it out

03:15 then problem solve and it's not just function of this just being able to

03:20 information back onto a test. So kind of the overall philo philosophy of

03:25 course is to help you be that learner and we're doing it through this

03:31 of comparative anatomy. Now, before get into what Comparative anatomy is and

03:36 , just understand the uh some important things. Anything you need to

03:40 you should be able to look up using the search engine on the uh

03:45 . Just uhau look for the little uh magnifying glass and use that

03:51 to plug in whatever uh keywords you to pull things up. So these

03:55 things here are, are kind of of the big things. Uh,

03:59 know your dates. Uh, many you are seniors, you should know

04:02 , uh, deadlines are to uh, fees in for your graduation

04:08 . Uh, you should know when drop dates are, you should know

04:10 your withdrawal dates are, uh, thing to do is just type in

04:14 calendar, type an academic calendar. , you should be able to pull

04:19 um the whole thing and see when specific dates are for everything. So

04:24 can see here the last day to the class without a grade is ord

04:28 called the official reporting day. That be January 31st the last day to

04:32 the class. The W would be 17th which is way towards the end

04:35 the semester. Certainly. Uh we uh we, you should be aware

04:41 your academic honesty policy. Uh The rule is don't lie, don't

04:44 don't steal. But that's a real . What are the definitions of those

04:50 ? What are the ramifications? What my rights of the student if you

04:54 know what your um undergraduate catalog says what your academic honesty policy is,

04:59 will be better informed. And so an example of the search term undergraduate

05:03 , academic honesty policy. And it'll you straight to the finally, um

05:10 you are a student with a you have accessibility needs. University does

05:14 that I will tell you though for class, um there is very little

05:19 room for you when it comes to exams. Um uh because we do

05:24 here as a group exam. And , um accessibility needs that you may

05:30 may not be able to be met by the uh the, the structure

05:34 the course. And that is part the rules of accessibility. But

05:38 so for you to understand that uh can type in accessibility, it will

05:42 you to the dart center and uh you to find and helps you understand

05:48 those things are. So, um there are some of the important policy

05:53 . We uh do almost everything exclusively canvas. So canvas, this is

05:57 the announcements come from. This is your syllabus is. That's where the

06:00 policies are. Uh any powerpoint slides I'm gonna pre uh uh produce,

06:04 will deliver there. Uh Any assignment you have, I'll link through

06:08 I don't do any video recordings for class because of the way of the

06:11 of the class. But if I like, for example, this video

06:15 through canvas, um the grade book pretty straightforward. I have here inaccurate

06:20 . Um For this course, it's straightforward. So you should be able

06:24 track your grades pretty well through With regard to uh this course,

06:30 we have two textbooks. One is required textbook. Uh one is not

06:34 supplemental, but because we have C , it basically is all cost one

06:38 . So I went ahead and did two books. So the first

06:41 the required book is called Vertebrates. by Kenneth Kong. It's in its

06:44 printing or eighth edition. This is your reading assignments, the required reading

06:49 uh come from. So we do required readings. You do need to

06:53 before you come to class. The textbook is supplemental. And so I

06:57 think the, the first textbook, the required reading is particularly hard to

07:02 . But I did find at times even for me, there were things

07:07 just didn't know. Um And so picked vertebrate life because it helps flesh

07:13 or makes more clear some of the that we're gonna be looking at.

07:17 if you're like, you know, sitting in, in the first

07:21 throwing family names or uh genera at , you know, certain texts and

07:26 like, I have no idea, life actually has pictures of some of

07:30 things and helps uh provide clear images what the organism that we're looking

07:36 So I, I chose it as , as a text because it does

07:40 that, that little gap in that first textbook doesn't have. So the

07:47 textbook is a Comparative Anatomy textbook. Vertebrate Life, which is the,

07:52 11th edition, the supplemental is more a vertebrate zoology textbook. So that's

07:58 of the distinction there. So you be required reading out of vertebrates.

08:02 is supplementary reading. Should you choose do it in the second textbook?

08:07 available through canvas? So, what the exams? Um The exams

08:14 are scheduled for the eighth of the fifth of March, the ninth

08:18 April and the seventh of May. I was reminded that uh I'm never

08:24 it right, I guess is it is on Feb on April 9th.

08:28 so, uh, there is, a really strong chance that we're gonna

08:33 the April 9th exam to April uh, structurally within, um,

08:39 , the class, there is a that's set aside to review. And

08:44 what will end up happening is if move the exam to the ninth or

08:48 , from the ninth to the fourth we'll just get rid of that review

08:51 , um, that it becomes And so, um, we might

08:55 it to that day. I'll, talk to you guys about that on

08:59 in terms of how the exam is , I haven't finalized, but I'm

09:04 99% towards a two part exam. first half would be, uh,

09:10 20 minutes, uh, set aside do an individual portion. And

09:15 um, then the second part would a group portion where there is short

09:21 , an essay that you guys are as a group which is what I've

09:25 in the past but I want to of do this individual part as

09:28 Uh, as far as policy is , uh, the exams cover only

09:32 material that's discussed in that particular I don't drop any exams. They're

09:37 cumulative and we do the exams in classroom. So both parts would be

09:42 in the classroom setting. Now, mentioned reading assignments. So these are

09:48 things you read before class. So you're gonna do is you're gonna come

09:51 class. There's pre these reading assignments already set up in um canvas.

09:56 you gotta do is just go see pages they are. They're gonna seem

09:59 large to you. But remember half text there that within the reading assignment

10:04 gonna be images and stuff. So never as big as they appear.

10:08 what I've also done is I have sets of reading uh questions. So

10:13 each reading assignment, you're gonna see question set, a question best uh

10:19 set. B question set. Now, my expectation is that every

10:23 reads the entire reading assignment. But I would ask you to do is

10:29 guys are gonna be set up in . I've already set up the groups

10:31 you. Um If you go into , you will see the group that

10:35 in. Um uh But what you what you'll see is um what I'm

10:41 you to do is take your group divide those questions set up among the

10:47 of your group and I don't care you do it. So, um

10:50 you have a group of, of and two right now, two groups

10:53 a group of six, you could I want two of you to do

10:55 , two of you to do B two to do C, right?

10:58 you're not, not everyone has to all the questions and, and,

11:02 really what these are trying to do trying to get you to focus

11:05 So they have some, some specific . So when each member of the

11:08 comes in to the classroom to engage the group discussion, everyone has a

11:13 bit of knowledge that they can contribute no one's walking in blind, that's

11:17 purpose of this. All right. you're really kind of preparing for class

11:23 the reading assignments and then what you is when you come to class,

11:27 this is where you're going to discuss it was that you learned. I'm

11:30 going to be lecturing, I'm there answer questions to help, help you

11:34 of resolve uh problems. Uh I even have at times basically say,

11:39 , everyone uh today what we're gonna instead of actually answering questions,

11:43 we'll kind of do a group discussion everyone kind of answers things and we'll

11:47 it to the board and see if can kind of solve the problems.

11:50 there's going to be different ways that approach it. But for the most

11:53 , what we're going to do is gonna be in your small group setting

11:56 you're going to be answering questions based the reading that everyone can contribute

12:02 So it's not like only one person . Question one, question, one

12:06 require knowledge from all three of those, those different question sets to

12:11 able to answer it. Now, does matter. So if you're not

12:15 up to class, you're not helping group learn. Remember, you're gonna

12:19 a test that you guys work together answering the questions, right? So

12:26 comes to the class with their This is gonna be a portion of

12:29 grade. So attendance matters. The is uh uh uh the group questions

12:36 have here, 20% of your That would not be true. That

12:39 be o sorry, that would be to 12.5%. So ignore that I

12:45 failed to update my slide. So 20%. It's like 12.5%. Ignore

12:52 portion right there. All right. anywhere between 6 to 10 questions based

12:58 the reading, you're working as a to answer the questions and it is

13:02 be turned in by the end of . So there's a time component uh

13:07 this. So why you need to prepared? You're gonna be under a

13:12 crunch to answer the questions. All . So I expect loud noises.

13:16 expect people talking, communicating, looking answers. This is not a,

13:22 divide up the questions and conquer because not designed that way. They're designed

13:26 you guys to work as a group answer them. All right.

13:30 in terms of how you're, the in the class is all right.

13:33 got four exams. Um You can of them as being um 100

13:39 I don't know the exact breakdown, it's something like 4060 individual to,

13:44 um uh group. It might be or 3070 something like that. I

13:50 know exactly. But you can, exam is 20 is going to account

13:55 a portion of the grade. Um this whole thing right here is uh

14:01 be 80% again, I don't know that's 20% of the final, but

14:06 80% total. Then your class Remember you have 12.5 is going to

14:11 the actual assignment and then 7.5 is to be attendance. Uh The one

14:16 I would say is uh we have overview. I do this for every

14:20 . So if this is your, orientation, you should know what I

14:23 in here. So online there is uh orientation assessment to say,

14:29 did you pay attention? Can you these questions about the class. All

14:33 . Now, as far as their , there's likely gonna be a

14:37 I haven't had a, uh, curve or likely, I'm sure saying

14:42 has not been a curve. So time I've taught the class, there's

14:45 a curve. Um Typically, uh see lots of A's and B's and

14:49 couple of C's in this class. , Ds and S are reserved for

14:53 who choose not to work. And are basically people who almost choose not

14:56 work as well. But so typically do pretty well in this class.

15:01 As long as you're paying attention and to learn, you should be pretty

15:04 off, you should do just Not sure if I have anything

15:07 the overview assignment. Um So this on the blackboard, it's canvas,

15:13 canvas. Um So that's gonna be the uh under the modules, you'll

15:18 it. Um There under modules, you should be able to answer straight

15:23 . Um It's part of that, in class grade, it will open

15:28 today at one o'clock. So it up about 18 minutes ago and then

15:32 comes due on uh Tuesday the So you have quite some time to

15:36 it. I would go ahead and get it done now. So what

15:40 have left, I don't think I any other slides. So what you

15:42 to do today is you already have assignment that's opened up. This is

15:46 reading assignment for Thursday. So go . I would uh I, I

15:51 kind of communicate with your group. see who your group is. You

15:55 have a group page. You can on that group page and communicate with

15:59 other. How you're gonna divvy up questions, start reading the textbook um

16:04 uh read that textbook and come to prepared to answer questions. Um That's

16:10 goal for today. Now, I also add, you'll see on uh

16:15 a canvas. There is a video . Now, that's more for fun

16:19 anything else. It kind of paints broader picture of some of the material

16:23 been that this class covers. Um whole video is not perfect. I

16:29 , this is, this is a from a, a documentary series that

16:35 really attracted me to the sciences very on. It's called uh The Day

16:40 the Universe Changed. It's done done James Burke. Um And this particular

16:45 deals with the question of how uh or how we began to see the

16:52 through the idea that life changes over that prior to very early on in

17:00 17 hundreds and earlier, we just everything in the in the world was

17:06 it was. And what this addresses , how do we come to understand

17:12 life changes? And this is kind central to the idea of Comparative

17:17 And it addresses some of the questions are brought up in this first

17:21 And I think James Burke does an job of storytelling. He always tells

17:24 good stories. So if you ever get a hold of any of his

17:28 series, they're really, really But towards the end, it gets

17:32 , it kind of addressed the question on now that we understand that the

17:36 changes, how did this affect how change later? And so that's not

17:42 to the course. It's actually the coming up to that. So it's

17:46 the 1st 45 minutes of the So if you feel like watching that

17:49 can and if not, if you feel like watching it, that's

17:52 It's, it's not a big I just think it's really good and

17:55 think you'd like it. So reading , start today, uh orientation

18:02 uh start today. Um I'll see guys Thursday. I hope everyone is

18:06 nice and warm, you know, temperature should rise above freezing, but

18:10 it's gonna drop again, but by it should start warming up all well

18:14 good. So I will see you
