03:01 we should put on that. But right. You guys in the front

03:04 , if you ever sitting in the row your job is to make sure

03:06 light is on and that light is . If those two lights are not

03:10 ? We have a problem. Um Actually doesn't matter if this one's

03:15 because you wouldn't hear me. But one is the one that actually is

03:17 voice that's being recorded right now. , So first off, what we're

03:22 do today is really, really Some of you I heard it's like

03:24 just gonna talk about the cylinder Yeah, that's probably the 31st,

03:28 minutes after that, I'm gonna talk you how to be successful in this

03:31 , not only in this class, how to be successful in all your

03:34 . The reason I give this conference talk on the very first day of

03:37 Is because 75% of you are not listen to me and you're gonna come

03:42 my office and go, I've always an a student. I don't understand

03:45 I'm getting a C in your And I was like, did you

03:47 to that first lecture? You're gonna at me maybe. And the answer

03:52 because really I get most of the come and see me weren't paying attention

03:58 need to hear this first. I want you all to achieve your

04:03 . And so that's what that second of this class is All right,

04:07 first off, make sure you read syllabus. How many of you guys

04:10 ever read your syllabus in an Good. Alright. That's your

04:15 you know the Eula is right. when you buy a piece of software

04:18 that first thing screen pops up and , do you agree there's all these

04:22 terms and you just like screw You click the button, didn't realize

04:26 gave away your firstborn child? that's kind of what this is.

04:30 basically says I am agreeing to do things because I'm telling you these are

04:34 things are that the expectations for the . So your job is to make

04:38 you understand what the expectations are. ? I'm not gonna throw things at

04:43 out of out of like, you why I don't like these kids this

04:46 and so I'm not gonna just throw and it's already been planned out.

04:50 for this semester is already there. , I know what's going on and

04:54 what the policies of the course All right. It has all sorts

04:58 fun stuff in there that we didn't to have to put in. But

05:01 it's not enough to have it on website now we have to have

05:04 So, that's why I have a page syllabus. I'm so sorry that's

05:07 my fault blaming provost. All But here's the basic important policies.

05:14 off. Anything you need to know be found through the U.

05:16 Website. All right. You just there popping the search engine just type

05:20 what you're looking for and nine times of 10 will be one of the

05:22 two things that pop up first with to drops and withdrawals. You should

05:26 your dates The last day to get of this class or any other class

05:30 February two. The closer you get that date the more money we get

05:33 keep after that date we get to all of your money and there's nothing

05:36 can do about it except for Alright so make sure you're gonna be

05:40 the classes you want to be in . You get out of the class

05:44 . You can switch and stuff during drop add drop period but that's like

05:47 last state after that your grades And what's weird is that and I

05:52 it's weird you guys probably love It's bad policy in my opinion.

05:56 the last day to drop the class 20 April. You know you guys

05:59 when the last day of classes are 2nd see if you're smart you would

06:03 looked that up already. And when I get done with this semester?

06:07 May two. So it's literally like week before the last day as a

06:11 which is just bad policy. It's because that means you might be in

06:15 position where you should have dropped a earlier but you keep working out working

06:19 , we're thinking, oh maybe maybe I'm gonna keep doing the same thing

06:22 doing in the finals last year. I gotta screw it. No,

06:25 should be a little bit earlier. that's what the policy is. April

06:28 is the last day to drop. gonna put it aside here before you

06:32 any class, Talk to your professor you drop. I have lots of

06:36 who drop out of this class with pluses after the second exam.

06:40 so make sure you talk to I'm not gonna keep you in a

06:43 that you shouldn't be in. But I'm gonna say, look,

06:46 might have a better grade than you you do. Oh, let me

06:49 . Oh look, you have a plus. Maybe you should stick

06:53 right? Do you know how much costs you to go to school or

06:56 credit hour here? How much? per class? Yeah, I

07:06 I'm that's how much I had to for like my whole life.

07:10 Anyway, I'm old dinosaurs roamed the and stuff like that. But remember

07:16 investing money in this, You don't to just throw it away.

07:21 so make sure you understand where your is before you you hit that

07:26 Okay, Academic honesty. Keep it . If you want to go read

07:30 policy, it's like three pages but it basically says is don't

07:33 Don't cheat don't steal. Don't plagiarize is a form of lying, cheating

07:37 stealing. And if you do, are consequences. All right. Don't

07:42 that person. If you are a who has done this in the

07:47 turn over your new leaf. This a new year. This is the

07:50 you get to do things new. . Anyway, that's where the policy

07:53 be found. You can tap into many guys are graduating this semester.

07:58 . Alright, congratulations. You for the future. Right. Um

08:03 you know when you're due but your for graduation or do okay. There

08:09 you go academic calendar type that in find out anything and everything you want

08:12 know. Okay. And yes, are fees do as a senior to

08:18 the university because if you can't take from you. What's the point?

08:24 right. Lastly, if you have disability, if you need a special

08:29 in the classroom, there's all sorts reasons. For example, if you

08:33 well, I'm not going to go the whole list, but you

08:35 there's all sorts of different types of . If you have those in need

08:40 , the university will accommodate you. just need to let them know.

08:44 so this is the place where you to do that and that's an important

08:47 for that. They're now calling it dark center named after somebody. I

08:51 know who it is. It's a more confusing than just saying csD but

08:54 , that's the dark center, but how you get access to that.

08:58 right. I told you about Most of you've been here at the

09:02 long enough. No blackboard. If first time at the university and you

09:05 use blackboard, but use something like , blackboard is like canvas. It's

09:09 as bad. All right. There poorly written pieces of software. Generally

09:15 , this is where you're gonna see . Whenever I make an announcement,

09:17 classroom. I'm gonna announce it But I also have it emailed out

09:20 you. So that's the first You'll get it via email, but

09:24 always gonna be posted there. your syllabus general policies, any piece

09:28 paper that I'm going to give to guys is there for the class.

09:32 power point that I do is always be re released before class. But

09:36 at 7:30 I know that sucks. it's because I want you guys to

09:40 . I don't want you to sit going, I've got the power

09:41 I don't have to read the All right. So the power points

09:45 going to be there. Any sort links to any sort of homework assignments

09:48 at least where the assignments will be going to be linked there as

09:52 And the videos I like I I record the link to the place

09:56 the videos are stored are found all . It's just easy. You can

09:59 on things. You will not break . Alright. So if you can't

10:02 something, just click around until you it. I know my organization is

10:06 necessarily your organization but it makes sense me. So just whatever. All

10:12 . A lot of you're going to this as your grade book. It's

10:15 a great book. It's a terrible book. Um I even have it

10:18 here. It is a poor grade . Alright. And the reason for

10:22 is that it is not an excel . Its basically programmed by a bunch

10:26 people who don't understand math or have know how to use math or

10:32 And so what it does best best to do is just think of

10:35 This is these are my scores and just looking to see if it's been

10:39 correctly. Alright. But it can't do any sort of really good

10:44 Your job will be to calculate your grade. You can kind of rely

10:47 this sort of but you can say there's probably a margin of air by

10:51 5% In terms of their calculations because example if you don't do an assignment

10:58 doesn't calculate, it it doesn't give a zero Right? It's like if

11:02 don't do an assignment, I got zero on the assignment and it's like

11:06 look I got a 97 doctor when did 23. I didn't do 23

11:09 the assignments. I got one of . No no you got zeros on

11:13 other 22. So there you So don't count on the calculations

11:19 I'm going to show you how to your own grade. It's not

11:22 If you took like 7th grade math can figure it out. Alright this

11:28 your book. It doesn't have a . So this is what it looks

11:31 . Um It's an e book. . There are no paper copies so

11:35 ask. Well I mean you can but no paper copies. Um You

11:39 it through. Uh Top hat. so the link to it is going

11:44 be found on blackboard. I'm not what the exact cost. It's around

11:49 . It might be 118 Might have up. 228 might be 86.

11:53 don't know exactly but it's it's not $1 million dollars if you've been in

11:57 . How many of you guys have a lot of science classes? Have

12:00 ever bought a science book in science ? Are they a million dollars?

12:04 . Yeah they're about $300 usually. this is actually kind of a decent

12:08 in terms of its cost. Alright will need to purchase it. There

12:11 homework assignments and reading assignments out of . Reading assignments are important for the

12:15 as are the homework assignments. There's a second item you need to get

12:21 called achieve, it's produced by Again the link is gonna be on

12:25 . It's $28 for the semester. basically other types of homework assignments.

12:29 gonna talk about my philosophy here in a moment of why we do the

12:32 that we do but you do need have these two items. Okay so

12:37 them asap your first reading assignment is next for the next class. Alright

12:43 look there it is. That's the for the course and why? Of

12:47 designed. Alright. I've been teaching course for 14 years. Alright.

12:52 some of you are very young and going holy crap. That was like

12:55 wasn't even in kindergarten when he started this class. Yeah. So there's

13:01 lot of stuff that I've learned in classes, one of which is how

13:07 learn and how we get better at how we store information. Okay.

13:12 that's what this all is gonna be . The way the course is designed

13:16 set up is to ensure that you the information and so that you create

13:21 pattern of learning that you can take with you and then use that for

13:25 success. All right now that's that's professor real way to say it.

13:30 is the way as a as a who knows these things work if you

13:35 what I tell you to do. right. You will see success and

13:39 will see success carried on into your endeavors. I get emails from students

13:45 the time and I'm gonna talk about to study and how to go about

13:48 information. I'm not talking about studying . I'm talking about how to

13:52 Right, okay. And if you the things the way that I've designed

13:56 , you're gonna find that you retain better. Alright. So that's the

14:01 behind why this stuff is set So, the principle is simply,

14:06 more I'm exposed to something, the I practice something the better I get

14:10 it. Do you believe in that ? You think that's true? Any

14:13 here? All right. If you you get better. The coach makes

14:19 practice. Doesn't Do you like your ? Some days? Most days?

14:25 , no one likes her coach when yelling at them. Alright, That's

14:28 a professor is. It's a right? It's a teaching coach.

14:32 can call ourselves Knowledge, Knowledge. . What is a Sherpa person helps

14:39 get up Mount Everest. Alright. one's going to climb Mount Everest on

14:43 own needs someone yelling at you and you up the hill. All

14:47 And that's kind of what this is right. It basically says,

14:50 the first thing I do is I to be exposed to information if you

14:55 ever gotten on a long trip The first thing you do is you

14:58 say I'm gonna go to Orlando and jump in your car. You should

15:01 know where Orlando is. So how you figure out where Orlando is

15:06 What do you do? Look it in what google artists? You see

15:12 you guys are young, google I'm gonna get atlas or map.

15:16 doesn't matter if it's google maps, doesn't matter if it's rand McNally and

15:19 pulling off the whole thing. You even look at a globe right,

15:24 Orlando? Okay. I heard it's in florida. You should know florida

15:29 that way. Alright. That's a thing. Okay. All right,

15:34 you should probably look up some stuff so that's the idea behind reading is

15:39 prepare yourself before coming to class because gonna go over things fast and we're

15:44 talk about lots of things, those things together are going to serve as

15:49 first hurdle to overcome. So if looked at something the first time,

15:53 if you don't understand what you're Oh, I've seen that before and

15:57 lowers the hurdle and makes it easier learn then we come to class.

16:02 . You have been trained over the two years that sitting at home in

16:05 of a screen is learning how many you guys believe that works. People

16:11 , you know, that's why we're here. Right? And it's

16:15 it's absolutely true that learning in a manner is not learning, there has

16:21 be some sort of interaction. Some sort of engagement, some sort

16:26 of things. I'm gonna get up and make an ax out of myself

16:29 some days. I'm gonna tell dad , I got a whole list of

16:31 ready to go. Alright. Those there to help you remember concepts and

16:37 Right now, I can do that the screen. But what do you

16:40 when you're like, let's let's we all be truthful, right? Because

16:43 did the same thing on the other . I do it in meetings.

16:45 like when I'm in a meeting, do I do? First thing to

16:47 is turn off the camera, turn my microphone, right? And then

16:50 do I do? I go to web page that I'm more interested in

16:53 through and every now and then I of listen in and then I go

16:56 and search going, are you guys that or were you like attentively?

17:01 wisdom here? No. Right. we can get distracted even in the

17:08 , we get distracted. This form teaching is not the best form of

17:12 . The best form of teaching is on. Right? But there are

17:16 of you who want to learn anatomy physiology and I have to expose you

17:19 these ideas before you go get in laboratory and start poking your fingers and

17:23 and stuff. We don't do the of stuff here. All that

17:26 Mostly rats and cats and other But that's kind of what we're doing

17:32 we're doing a method of exposure and , coming to class and experiencing it

17:38 going to give you an advantage, just in my class in every

17:46 All right. There is something about up that correlates highly with grades every

17:55 . Alright. So, you show , Alright. And what I'm paying

17:59 , I'm trying to figure out what's . Right? The reading gives me

18:04 overview. Come into class, tells what specifically I need to know and

18:09 I'm going to practice. And that's the purpose of homework is.

18:13 So homework is going to be after class, preparing your notes for the

18:17 should be after each class. And what all the all this stuff is

18:22 . All right. And I'm not you to increase my class is not

18:26 most important class you'll ever take in life. It's not I don't think

18:30 material is the most important. you're gonna forget 90% of the

18:33 but by the time you graduate, okay. Because if you're planning on

18:38 healthcare, guess how many times you to take this stupid class.

18:42 Right? And then you get to practice and you get your hands

18:45 Right? So this is your first in the grand scheme of your entire

18:50 . This classes like this for your . Alright. But we're gonna get

18:55 this pattern of I'm gonna work before . I'm gonna come to class.

18:59 gonna work after class. And if do that, I spend less time

19:03 more time learning, getting higher grades having more free time to do the

19:07 stuff in my life. And that like fun. Yeah, I like

19:13 . I figured this out in grad . I didn't figure this out as

19:16 undergrad. I really kind of regret knowing it as an undergrad. All

19:21 . So, what are the homework ? Well, 10% or greater gonna

19:24 these homework assignments. All right. , these are the required one.

19:27 two types that are gonna be found top hat, which is what your

19:30 is. Alright. There's one that going to read before class.

19:35 Read it like you're reading a don't sit there and try to

19:38 I've got to digest all this Just read it right? It opens

19:42 right after class at 10 a.m. And it closes at 8 30 before

19:47 That's when the grade comes. So, there's a couple of questions

19:50 to make sure you're paying attention. do that. Do those questions are

19:54 basic questions like, you know, just read this. Do you know

19:58 answer to this type type stuff? ? So that's the first one.

20:02 second one is a little bit more and I should point out these first

20:06 assignments are gonna be extended normally. like if you had a reading that's

20:10 open up today at 10 o'clock, comes due at 8 30 normally on

20:16 , like the next class. But the first two assignments you get an

20:21 extension because I'm going to get a of ads in the class and I

20:24 opening up old assignments, I'm Alright, so that's what that's all

20:29 . The second one, you can this is what it looks like.

20:32 see reading one lecture review. All . These there's about eight questions and

20:37 this does. These open up after and they stay open up until the

20:42 before the exam and this is going help you understand the things that you

20:47 know for the exam. These are open ended questions. The last few

20:51 things like um just as an um what are the positions of the

20:58 ? Right? The what's the, are the three planes of the

21:01 Do you know them? So they asking you to write it out and

21:04 you think of these answers and all answers are right there. You can

21:08 this as many times as you need to feel like you're 100% comfortable before

21:11 submission date. But the idea here I'm trying to figure out on focusing

21:16 on what I said was important in . The questions are guiding you to

21:20 you think about what's important, so when you go into the exam,

21:24 already explored, explored all that stuff ? Rather than sit there and desperately

21:28 to memorize everything that ever come out my mouth. All right, So

21:33 first two assignments, 10% of your , we also have the achieve

21:38 That's a separate type of assignment. are little tiny multiple choice type

21:43 Alright, so again, this is practice part. I'm just practicing to

21:46 if I'm learning the information. These do uh midnight the day after

21:52 and it's like all right, I've all this weird kind of timings,

21:55 ? So I'm reading right after class before the next class. All right

22:01 , right after class I have homework opens up, one goes all the

22:04 till the test one opens up and open for a little over 37

22:10 Okay, so that's what these two . This is what the 37 hours

22:14 extended the first two assignments so that guys can kind of get used to

22:18 pattern. Oh yeah, and I this up here because it's I use

22:25 great here, everything I'm saying there's a little tiny orientation quiz.

22:30 open up until like three weeks from , I'll get it done as soon

22:34 you can. Just because when you work, just get it out of

22:37 way, it's going to be part your achieve greatness is basically saying did

22:40 pay attention today? Alright. so far we have a reading

22:46 We have a top hat assignment that's class, then we have an achieve

22:51 that's after class. And then if not enough for you just for fun

22:57 let's face it, we love doing . Right? Homework is our

23:01 Okay. You're all liars. All . Now for those of you who

23:05 extra practice on the last day before exam. Alright, we have another

23:11 . It doesn't count for points. you want extra questions there they

23:16 Do not confuse this with the post review. Last semester I had about

23:23 of the class going. I didn't I had to do these for for

23:26 . I didn't do it just like said in class. All right.

23:29 no, these are the excellency. different. They say pre exam

23:33 Look at what this one said. ? It's a lecture review. This

23:36 for points. This one is not right. They're just they're like,

23:44 , I'm panic mode is to test two days. I got extra

23:47 So you've got extra questions. Not not or not not for credit.

23:54 huh. Mhm. So you can this as many times as you want

23:57 until you feel comfortable. You don't to do, it's up to

24:01 All right, so that takes us to exams. What our exams?

24:06 , We have an exam about every lecture. Alright, so February

24:11 March eight. Then we have a . I'm so sorry. The way

24:14 set up, we have March then we have a class and we

24:16 spring break. It sucks. Everyone's be like, I'm not even here

24:21 March 10. My brain has been off and I don't care mine

24:25 All right, party would Um April seven and then the last one

24:30 May 10 were really kind of way . And Finals land. Alright.

24:36 exam, even the one out in finals land there one hour. Each

24:40 . 50 questions are multiple choice. you're planning on a career in the

24:44 professions, this is the type of you're going to see for the rest

24:47 your life. So sorry, multiple exams suck. I don't like

24:55 but this is what your future so, it might as well get

24:57 to it. Right, okay. right, exams are going to be

25:01 caSA. Alright, if you're new the university casa is a testing

25:07 Alright. It doesn't look anything like . This is a random picture I

25:11 off the internet. Um casa. have to register for it. If

25:15 registered, they go and make you a digital thumbprint. once they've done

25:20 biometric you're registered and you don't have ever go up there and reregister ever

25:25 . But you do have to do . Um You do have to sign

25:28 for exam times And again I'm specifically talking to students have not been at

25:32 . Of H. Here before. you've ever had to wait to get

25:35 boarding pass for Southwest Airlines that's what to sign up for casa is like

25:42 right. The difference is that you this at midnight. So two weeks

25:46 the exam at midnight the sign up up for your costs exams and what

25:52 doing is you're trying to find the that's ideal for you. When is

25:55 ideal time for every student last exam the schedule? I don't know why

26:02 not like you're studying during the Right And we're all lying to

26:05 It's just an extra couple of hours panicking I suppose. Right. And

26:10 everyone at midnight two weeks before is be sitting with their finger over the

26:14 watching that clock and when that clock and they're all gonna be fighting to

26:20 those last slots. All right. like when you're trying to get that

26:23 group and you're stuck in the Group and you're like I just logged

26:26 at the exact right. What what so just be aware that there's gonna

26:30 competition for those late slots. The students are gonna take the early

26:35 get their exams done and then go happy hour for the rest of the

26:40 . All right. We don't have on exam days. So you know

26:44 your exam is at 4:00 PM, still we're not meeting in here.

26:49 , that's your day to take the . It's not a day to lecture

26:53 exclude the people who got stuck with early times. Alright. My exams

26:58 not cumulative sciences by their nature is . So I'm not gonna sit there

27:03 go, oh here is an I'm gonna ask you a question from

27:06 one. That's not gonna happen. if you don't understand the material from

27:09 early units, you're gonna find yourself in the latter units. Just by

27:14 . Lastly, I do not drop . The reason being is if you

27:18 any time any effort preparing for an , you used valuable time and I'm

27:23 going to throw away your time. , So be preparing for each exam

27:29 the way. Understanding I'm not dropping of them. All right. I'll

27:36 a time where you guys can ask questions here in just a second.

27:38 right. So where do you So this is on blackboard up on

27:41 blackboard. You'll see a menu over the left hand side. Uh If

27:44 go to cost if you go here course info, that's how you enroll

27:48 Top hats. So you can click if you haven't purchased it yet,

27:50 can click on that and it takes right there to uh give you the

27:55 to purchase what you need to Alright? Um If you are doing

27:59 you do the same thing, it's click that button, it's like oh

28:02 can go purchase achieve their, if have a book scholarship and need an

28:07 card you can go to the They should have access cards there,

28:13 has like an up charge of about roughly on everything that they sell.

28:18 that's why I say just buy it from the publisher right? I'm all

28:22 you know the cheapest way that I get something done, you know?

28:25 that's that's just an example. Just straight to the publisher. But if

28:29 can't bookstore should have the stuff that need. Once you have access to

28:33 things. Oh and if you fail some reason I was like I screwed

28:37 up. I don't have access. can't do it, Don't contact

28:39 I you need to contact their customer . These guys are very very

28:44 Usually you can call them up and do the chat thing and they will

28:49 your issue whatever the case whatever your is. So they'll be able to

28:52 that once you have access you can to content and those two things will

28:57 you directly to the things that you to do. All right? So

29:01 the easy way of course info is you get started over here. Content

29:06 how you do the work. So this is kind of what your

29:11 looks like from my perspective. I you have 15 hours most of your

29:16 15 hours. I understand I'm not only class so don't think that this

29:21 like your only class. So this all the free time you get to

29:24 an a. And p. That's what this is. All right.

29:26 idea here is just to show you you can do. So here we

29:29 on a Tuesday were lecturing from 8 to 10. What's going to happen

29:33 you can presume that there's been a assignments been open until 8:30 as soon

29:38 that class is over the next reading opens up for until the next

29:42 All right. And you can see I'm doing thursday I've got a longer

29:46 of time to get that reading That's just how the week's work over

29:50 weekend you get more time. All , secondly remember we said we have

29:55 homework assignment that opens up, it till midnight so basically you have from

30:00 AM till midnight the next night that's hours each of those assignments are like

30:05 to 30 questions, you can get done in like 30 minutes. So

30:10 have 37 hours to do a really homework assignment. All right. And

30:16 you hints of how to do this a bit. Right? And then

30:19 say we have a review that review up right after class and it stays

30:23 until the exam. All right. you have a lot of time to

30:26 that one. I don't recommend waiting the night before the exam to do

30:30 though. All right. So you kind of see what am I doing

30:33 everything is kind of becoming additive as move forward during the unit.

30:38 But you have assignments that come open then close come open close open.

30:43 . Very very basic repetitive pattern. before class come to class, homework

30:52 class rents, repeat graduate, achieve . Okay. Other fun stuff on

31:02 . Just because I love you Uh We're going to see this inner

31:06 of the cell. This will come . Not that date. Um There's

31:11 lecture on on the cell. Then becomes available after we talk about the

31:15 of the cell. This is just video that was done by I think

31:18 Harvard. Um And it's showing you the parts we just talked about and

31:23 it looks like. Um It's really a it's a digital version, but

31:28 based on actual footage and stuff that have an exploration stuff. So you

31:32 kind of see the parts relative to other and what they're doing. So

31:35 just for giggles. Um Then I this video life help videos. If

31:40 a person who struggles struggles with just monotony of daily life. Some of

31:45 things are kind of helpful to help deal with anxiety and depression uh dealing

31:51 the way the world is working right . And it's one of my favorite

31:56 videographers on Youtube. All of this is hilarious and it's it's good stuff

32:01 I threw a couple of others fun in there as well. I think

32:03 have one appear on five G. there's some people who really freak out

32:07 five G. And there's an engineer talks about it and it's hilarious.

32:11 , if you watched any other videos nine out of 10 times, he

32:14 himself just for giggles like trying to you something you can electrocute himself.

32:19 . Anyway, so that's what that is. You know, there's nothing

32:21 there that you have to watch, if you're interested you can go and

32:24 it out. Oh I got extra for the class too. Everyone always

32:28 me is your extra credit. The semester's there's extra credit.

32:31 this is how it works, You have to do it. It's not

32:34 count against you in some classes, way they count extra credit makes it

32:38 against you and it doesn't seem that until you kind of look at the

32:41 and wait a second. I've got do this stuff. So this does

32:45 count against you. This is how works Before each exam. There's there's

32:49 before each exam, there are two credit assignments per exam totaling five points

32:54 each exam. Alright. So there's before and one after notice to do

32:58 this before and after crap. One of the hardest things about being

33:02 student is understanding whether or not you yourself for examination, right? Purpose

33:09 examination is simply to see did I the material? I wish we didn't

33:13 to test you. I'd rather just you the material. It's a lot

33:15 fun that way. Right. But have to ask the question right?

33:18 paying money. So how do we that you actually learn the stuff?

33:21 we got tests and that's what we're . So how do you know you're

33:24 ? And that's what the extra credits doing. Alright. The first extra

33:28 opens up at six PM before the . All right. And then it

33:33 at nine a.m. On the day of exam. In other words, the

33:36 is you do this before the I don't care if your exams at

33:39 p.m. You get it done before the day starts. All right. And

33:44 it does is simply ask you some simple questions. Did you study this

33:49 ? How did you study this Do you feel confident with this

33:52 It's a self assessment. I don't at your answers. It's for you

33:56 use to self assess to see whether not you're prepared. All right.

34:01 the first one. You do it points added to your test score.

34:07 . Pretty easy after the exam that going to see the second assignment.

34:13 second assignment says, Alright, based what you learned and what you thought

34:17 learned. Did you get the grade got And why did you get the

34:21 that you got? Did you do or did you do that? All

34:25 . So, it basically goes back has you reflect on your exam now

34:30 to how you studied and whether or you really thought you were prepared.

34:35 , it's basically analysis of did my work. And if they didn't

34:41 are you going to change it? lot of people don't change after they

34:46 how crappy their methodology is. I'll keep doing it and hopefully it will

34:51 this time. All right. that's what those two things are All

34:56 . And it's good. You'll see open up. I'll tell you this

35:00 will really open up like, right the day after the exam don't do

35:03 you actually look at your exam. ? Because you'll have like three weeks

35:06 two weeks to get it done. right. I'll kind of say,

35:09 , it's opened up. Go and at it, Go do this.

35:11 if you start getting panicky, I to just do what you can do

35:13 and just get your point. But purpose here is not the point.

35:16 that's the carrot. Alright. The here is to be self analytical because

35:21 you don't know what you're doing you're never going to improve. And

35:25 this is asking you to ask that . What do I need to do

35:28 improve? Alright. Um There are on extra credit. Their bonus.

35:33 if you missed it. Sorry, I was sick. Sorry.

35:37 You crawl your deathbed like we used do and just do what you can

35:41 . It's all online. So it's that hard. And these take like

35:44 minutes so easy. All right. be aware of the due dates when

35:50 come up. All right. How grades are calculated and then we'll get

35:56 questions. Alright, So this is the formula. No. All

36:02 Real simple. Alright. Top Alright. That's to learn the new

36:06 stuff, right. That's read right. That's also doing those uh

36:10 homework assignments that basically say, did figure out what the learning objectives?

36:14 point out with the learning objectives, you did you learn them? That's

36:17 of your grade? All right. top hat, they'll tell you how

36:20 points you have. It says this how many points you have. This

36:23 how many points you could have Just take one divided by the

36:26 That's going to give you a percentile . And so that's 10% of your

36:29 grade. So that's an easy one calculate because top that tells you what

36:33 earned. Alright, achieve. This basically there's 25 assignments. That's 24

36:39 assignments. And that orientation I Alright, so that's 25 and you

36:43 just take that and average them all . So after the first exam,

36:46 can say, well, I've got assignments here plus the Quiz. That's

36:50 assignments. I have this average based those seven assignments, that's 10%.

36:54 10%. Then the last one for total. Um coming out to 80%

37:00 your final grade. Alright? So you need to see what that looks

37:05 Um we're gonna throw in the extra here in just a second. Your

37:07 grade at any point. You can . You can just say,

37:10 what are my test? That's What's my top hat grade? That's

37:14 . What's my achieve grade? That's . That's an easy calculation. You

37:18 to throw your extra credits in You just take your exam at the

37:22 credits you earned on that test. if you do it for each

37:26 you have four tests. I'm just make our lives real simple here.

37:28 have 80 on each test magically because just perfect in that way. All

37:33 . And then you do all the credit. That's 80 plus five plus

37:37 , 80 plus, 80 plus, plus, 80 plus five plus five

37:40 plus. What's the average? It's 85. Right? It's basically 80

37:47 plus a five average. Put It's an 85 average. So,

37:51 what you can do. Right? , I told you um that's how

37:56 can calculate the grade. This is of the important questions. Is there

37:59 curve in the class? I have taught this class where we haven't had

38:02 curve. My goal is to have get an A. So we don't

38:06 to do curves or do math or anything. And I still have money

38:10 aside for a kegger. If the class gets an A. We're having

38:15 party. Mhm. And I've touched 14 years. We have not yet

38:20 a party. Okay. So just this could be the semester I really

38:26 like a party. All right. , I want to point this

38:31 This is how this works. Usually what I'm gonna do is I

38:34 a curve. I'm gonna try to this to people in the back.

38:36 not gonna be able to really see . Alright. I apologize.

38:40 But here, yeah, by the , I shouldn't play basketball. Let's

38:52 this one. All right. All right. So that would be

38:58 a curve looks like. Right. bell curve. Right. So let's

39:03 this is you We're not gonna put over there. All right. What

39:06 do is I calculate the grades. figured where you are on the

39:10 There you are. You're that dot after I figure that out, then

39:13 add in the points for your for grade and that moves you on the

39:21 . That's your new score. I don't put in the grades and

39:26 put in the X. Credit and do the curve because that would be

39:30 . Alright. So the curve is first then the extra credit. So

39:34 move on the curve. That makes . So people will shift forward with

39:40 extra credit. So a lot of forget that and that's why they freak

39:44 , freak out about their grades etcetera etcetera. All right. So,

39:48 talked for 40 minutes and you guys said anything. Alright. There's questions

39:55 your mind. I can see Alright. For those of you who

39:58 keeping your eyes open. Let's hear . What question you have? Yes

40:05 . Practice what's that? Uh So access for casa? I'm sorry.

40:14 not a Yeah. No, no no casa is free. Casa is

40:25 of your tuition. It's run CASA run by the math department because everybody

40:30 to take a math class at the . So they had to test 40,000

40:35 every year, so they didn't. if there was a fee it was

40:40 it was probably already assigned. But may have been. Did you do

40:42 during that like the height of the thing? The math courses?

40:46 Yeah. Yeah. Math Yeah, gonna stick you because their math All

40:51 , people we make fun of in class, chemists, mathematicians. If

40:56 either of those two things, I in advance. All right. But

41:01 , no, there's no fee. just basically show up. And since

41:04 already registered, just reiterating it, registered, you've taken a classic required

41:08 be a CASA. You do not to go back over there and

41:11 You're already in their system. So if you've taken something that requires

41:15 to be a casa, you're in system at this point. All you

41:18 do is just sign up. But you've never done anything with casa.

41:21 and where are we gonna do I don't know, there are three

41:25 locations on campus. There's Garrison jim there. All right. There is

41:30 . B. CBD. It sounds now with the oil and stuff.

41:36 basically it's the classroom and business Alright. That's over by the by

41:43 business college and then there's someone I it's an Agnes Arnold Hall. All

41:49 , I think they have a scheduled Garrison. But don't trust me when

41:57 sign up. Look and make sure know where you're going? Because the

42:01 thing in the world is you think going one place and you're supposed to

42:05 at the other place, But I'm sure we're Garrison. We they they

42:09 me over there, so they sent to that one. I don't.

42:13 right, that's a good question. other questions you got? Yes,

42:17 . The final exam is the fourth , so there's no cumulative big overreaching

42:22 encompassing uh exams. So, your exam is you'll hear me say

42:28 it's not a final. It's 1/4 has no more power. No

42:33 There's no more difficult. Well, don't know, material wise, it

42:37 be more. I don't know. never had anyone complain about it,

42:41 usually by then they're just mad at anyway, so, anyone else?

42:47 , if there are no other Yes. I think you gotta raise

42:50 hand big because it's a big classroom little tongue hands like, you

42:52 Go ahead. No. So what do, This is a this is

42:58 a good question regarding grades. Are you ready to be scared a

43:02 bit because that's my job is to you a little bit. Alright,

43:06 I do shoot for a grade range my class, Alright for my

43:12 I want an average grade. Are ready? Just just Between 60 and

43:19 . Mm hmm. Alright, but you guys are used to thinking of

43:23 60 or 65 is a failing So No, no, no.

43:25 is science and science. We get do all sorts of fun stuff.

43:28 a reason I do that. I want grades up pushing up against that

43:31 . Because that doesn't mean I can't how how much you've actually learned.

43:35 everyone's getting 100 you know, they that in the english world. They

43:38 everyone to feel good about themselves. they're like, oh, you did

43:41 good. Here's a flower 100 you ? No. Here we're measuring

43:47 We want to see did you learn if I mean in my entire career

43:52 however long I said 14 years. think it's 14 years. I'm starting

44:00 . All right. I've only had student get almost a perfect grade in

44:04 of my classes. 100 100 198 four exams. I've never seen anywhere

44:10 . And I mean, he was was a special guy. I

44:13 he was just every day he'd come , he'd into my office and I

44:17 this question. I got this I got this question. He studied

44:20 the time. I'm not expecting that anybody. All right. And he

44:23 just he was just an interesting Alright. Anyway, I'm not shooting

44:27 that for you guys. I want just find out. You know.

44:30 I said, I'm shooting for an of 60-65. Alright, A's in

44:35 class. A minus usually starts between 90. Alright, so A's are

44:40 where is normally are a little bit . Alright. The B range shoots

44:44 little bit lower than that. If going to read the syllabus that kind

44:46 talk about what historical ranges are. right. So the C range is

44:50 little bit broader but I'm shooting for average between 60 and 65. Failing

44:55 the class is a 50 per cent . Okay. That's a hard

44:59 I don't change that number. That curve. Does't matter. Why do

45:03 come up with that number if you across the street twice and get hit

45:08 a car Only once. I want consider that passing. All right,

45:14 fair enough. Alright. And part it is because the nature of the

45:17 , you know lends itself to being little bit more difficult so we tend

45:21 push down a little bit in terms that. That doesn't mean that you

45:24 , if you get and I'll have lot of you going, oh my

45:27 , I'm freaking out freaking out. not used to getting these types of

45:29 . This is how science courses typically is it's a lot harder to get

45:34 grades. I mean where you're getting scores. Alright. We're not shooting

45:39 perfect scores here. We're trying to out are we storing information. And

45:43 I want you guys to do is want you to start thinking in terms

45:46 I'm not here for the grade. know you are. It's that I

45:51 it. All right. But I you to put that in your back

45:54 . You're here to learn. All . How many of you want to

45:58 a nurse who doesn't know what she's about or he anyone How many of

46:04 want to go to a doctor who the day on kidneys and you have

46:07 kidney problem. All right. This what we're talking about here. You

46:13 believe it or not are planning on profession of being on the front lines

46:18 disease. Your job that you're planning running into right now is to go

46:24 and do battle against the things that trying to kill us. All

46:29 And I'm not going to pretend like is the class that is the most

46:34 , right? But you need to what you're getting yourself into. And

46:37 my job here is to help you seeing that right? Is to lay

46:42 foundation. So that when you go nursing school, when you go to

46:45 school, Dental school, optometry Pharmacy school, Pt school, OT

46:50 P. A. School. So skip any veterinary medicine. There are

46:55 few people who do that medicine So if you're one of them awesome

47:00 that you know what you know and you're gonna be able to go in

47:04 and be successful. The biggest thing me. Okay, don't tell anyone

47:13 . I want to take over. want to take over the texas medical

47:18 . Mhm. The only way I'm to do that is like Cougars in

47:23 and they're running everything. All that's my job. So I'm gonna

47:28 you achieve whatever you're trying to That means I'm going to have to

47:32 the tough coach. Okay, so talk about how to do that.

47:37 right, now, I think I a right to do this or I'm

47:41 teach you how to study and For example, I was the type

47:44 students you hated. Alright, Never Got B pluses, Right. I

47:53 my parents, drove my parents drove my professors nut everyone. Why

47:57 you try harder? Why should I can get a B plus.

48:02 , now we can talk about the behind all that a lot of psychosis

48:06 , I'm sure, Right? But is not the way to go through

48:10 . Alright. What I found even though I could get away with

48:14 , you know? I mean, this was my whole undergraduate career was

48:17 getting away. I was at That was what I graduated with a

48:21 average, not a bad average, ? I mean, some people are

48:24 that's really good, but not if want to get into the health professions

48:27 the reason is not because health professions hard. It's because everybody wants to

48:32 at the room. There are 325 here. There are more people in

48:35 room that have been slots available for school. Right. That's kind of

48:43 . That means you've got to be than everybody else. Right. And

48:47 you can't have that lackadaisical attitude that had. All right. Now,

48:51 went on to grad school, And I was like, alright,

48:54 school, who I can do And the very first thing I did

48:57 I was sitting in a biochemistry All right now keep in mind.

49:00 I said, I was a lazy . I mean if I could put

49:03 off to the last minute I would I didn't have to study, I

49:07 All right. Here I am in biochem class. First class I took

49:11 grad school Professor walks in with a of coffee, not notes, not

49:16 stack of things that no power points cup of coffee. So everything he's

49:21 me is off the top of his , right? And behind him,

49:26 this broken T A just wheeling in cart of of of papers.

49:32 So That's not. It was like that size of that thing. And

49:37 started handing these stacks out and I'm I exaggerate the story a little

49:41 But I mean, I'm telling you stacks are about this high, all

49:43 . And they're just handing them to , right? There's like 40 of

49:46 in class. Any of us in class. I can't remember. We're

49:49 excited in grad school first class. I'm like, oh, here's our

49:52 and everything we're gonna need to know the semester. And the guy with

49:55 cup of coffee says, so on T is handing out your packets for

49:59 first exam. I'm just like, ? Now? I'm looking at this

50:05 . I'm like, there's no way going to be able to remember all

50:09 information. I can't fake it Cup of coffee guy. Like I

50:15 , it's teaching. Like, let me give you this idea and

50:18 start. That's what grad school was . And I said, I can't

50:24 what I've been doing. And so when my brain went back to all

50:27 things that everyone ever told me about . And I'm like, man,

50:32 a pretty social guy. I like out and having fun. I

50:36 that's what college is all about. your generation to know this because every

50:41 I tell this story they're like, , no, we study,

50:43 no, no, no, no. I went to school in

50:45 Orleans. It was about going right? That's what we did.

50:52 right. And so I'm like, can't do this and have a social

50:56 . I got friends. I've got go drink beer and shoot pull it

51:00 now. I went to grad school Houston. I was at MD

51:03 All right. So I started all right, Well Maybe if I

51:08 setting aside a little bit of like maybe 30 minutes I can,

51:12 can do this. And as long I'm focused in this, 30 minutes

51:16 I could get everything done. And what happened was that I started realizing

51:21 started recognizing that studying is just like else. Right? It's just like

51:26 out how many guys work out. mean not all of us do.

51:29 not not everyone's favorite thing. And sad thing is I actually do work

51:33 three times a week. It's part the schedule. Right? When you

51:36 out, you have a schedule. am going to wake up at this

51:39 . I'm going to do these exercises this long and then that's part of

51:42 day, right? Just like I'm to shower, I'm going to shower

51:48 day at this time. I'm going eat my meal at this day and

51:52 time there's a little strip and so you gotta do is you gotta put

51:55 little strip in your day. That this is my time to study

51:59 your college students. When should you this? See this is what you

52:04 don't know what your schedules are set is the idea behind this is that

52:09 supposed to do it during those big gaps during your day. Yeah,

52:14 just saw the eyes like what Yeah right. You have a class

52:19 a gap, have a class. of you are like oh no,

52:22 gonna plan my day where I stack class that I could possibly take all

52:26 hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My and Wednesdays and Fridays are free.

52:29 hoo. I can work well now have two jobs, one job is

52:34 to class and learning the other job paying you money. Alright. And

52:39 now have to balance two jobs, have to give up something social life

52:43 probably sleep right now. What I'm teach you here is I'm gonna show

52:48 how you can keep social life and . Alright? By just putting something

52:54 your schedule. All right, that's the studying preparing part is.

52:57 First off an understanding about studying, need to be a time manager.

53:02 , gotta put something and study when should I study? The best

53:06 to study is when the information is in your brain. All right,

53:09 taking an 8 30 class. It at 10 o'clock. If you don't

53:13 a class until 11 o'clock or 11 then you use the 10 to 11

53:18 time. And the reason for that because of this little graph right here

53:21 you're looking on the left. It's the ebbing House forgetting curve. It

53:27 has a name. Somebody did a of research to figure this stuff

53:29 And basically what the research basically says this if I'm given a piece of

53:34 over a short period of time, going to start losing that information because

53:37 went into short term memory and then term memory says, yeah, you're

53:41 gonna use this. Okay, well just gonna dump it now. This

53:43 not an actual number. This is made up curve just to kind of

53:47 the point and what it says, says, look, I'm giving 100%

53:51 , let me say I'm gonna give a 10 digit number. What would

53:53 a good example of a 10 digit . You guys aren't used to this

53:58 you just put people's names on your and click each other's buttons go

54:02 Okay, I got your information. way you do this is back in

54:05 day is like, oh girl, your number? And they would tell

54:09 you have to sit there and go . You know That's what we had

54:16 do. Alright. Technologies kind of this up. But a 10 digit

54:20 is an example of a phone Alright, someone gives you attended number

54:28 20 minutes. You will only remember of those numbers. Hopefully in the

54:32 order In a day, you'll only 30% of those numbers. And

54:37 this is not an actual car but can kind of see over 31 days

54:42 of those numbers. Alright again, , now let's put this in the

54:47 of a classroom. When do you for an exam? Oh usually two

54:49 before the exam. So if I a class today and learned a whole

54:53 of facts of which you will be In 30 days when the exam

54:57 How much of that information am I to remember? Oh, only about

55:02 of it if I haven't reviewed any it. So what that means is

55:05 it comes time to study for the , I'm being my own teacher to

55:10 myself 80% of the material because I it all. And boy don't.

55:15 love teaching myself stuff. And oh the way, I have five other

55:19 where the same curve is being applied the equal amount of information. That's

55:24 studying sucks. So let's get in of the studying, let's do it

55:28 we're in the process of forgetting before forgot him. Right? So if

55:35 come to class and the first thing do is I go out of class

55:39 start studying right away for just a of minutes. I'm going to

55:44 I'm gonna hold that information for a period of time. That's what the

55:48 graph shows you. It says, , I am forgetting at this

55:51 but if I go and review after short period of time, the rate

55:54 which I forget stuff slows down. if I keep doing this over

55:59 then by the time I'm going to called on to do something, I

56:03 less to learn because I have stored into long term memory. So,

56:11 we're doing is we're interrupting the forgetting . I'm not sure if that's a

56:15 , but we're going to go ahead go with it. All right.

56:20 that's number one study right after It doesn't take that long to 30

56:25 , basically go over what I just . It's all fresh in my

56:28 I'm going to review and I'm gonna you how to review now when you

56:31 this, what you don't want to is you don't want to over study

56:33 you don't want to understudy over studying I'm studying stuff I don't need to

56:36 . Understudy means I'm studying not studying stuff I do need to know.

56:40 , how do I know this This is part of the process.

56:43 post review questions. The lecture review I'm going to give you are basically

56:47 these are the things I told you learn go back and review them

56:54 What you're really doing here is just yourself. So it's not just time

56:59 organization. All right. You're gonna in a class, hour and a

57:02 long, 30 slides and there's gonna a crap ton of information that's coming

57:06 you and you're gonna be, I learn all this stuff. Yes,

57:08 can. You just need to organize . So if these represent your

57:12 all you gotta do is kind of about. It's like, okay,

57:15 what are the topics that I just ? Well, I'm not real sure

57:18 that's why we have the lecture review because they're going to help guide you

57:21 that way. But the idea is identify what those topics are and figure

57:25 , Okay, if these are the things I've got to learn or these

57:28 the three things in the class I to learn. What are the things

57:31 this topic that helped me understand that topic. In other words, I'm

57:35 take a top down approach to the that I learned stuff as opposed to

57:39 bottom or bottom up approach, which what most of you do right

57:43 Most of you when you study, sit there and go, what are

57:46 6000 facts that I have to remember this exam? And so you sit

57:50 and you desperately try to memorize a bunch of facts are not connected to

57:54 . But if you ask the what was it that I learned

57:57 Oh, I learned about, for , the skin. Okay, well

58:01 are what I want you to know skin and its derivatives. Oh,

58:04 , I know that skin is epidermis dermis. Okay, well, what

58:08 an epidermis? And then you say epidermis have five layers? What are

58:12 five layers? It's these things, are the characteristics, what makes this

58:15 different from that one? And all a sudden now you're down to the

58:18 that you had to learn or you you were trying to learn? In

58:22 words, you're organizing your own Many of you like to study my

58:28 . Don't create your own notes, slides, big old stack over

58:33 I can condense that down to about or three pages of notes in my

58:37 words with my own drawings. what am I gonna remember? My

58:40 words? Of my own drawings or that someone else did my own

58:44 Right. These slides up here are to me to remind myself what it

58:48 . I've got to talk about. notice what do I do? I

58:50 and look, It's okay. I this slide and then go back right

58:53 my memory where I put all this down. Right? If I asked

58:57 to say, what's on this you'd have to sit there and read

59:00 right? Because you haven't done it least as many times as I

59:03 So the idea here is to organize so that you can get this stuff

59:08 a couple of pages of information So can think about it like this.

59:13 test is roughly equal to about 180 , maybe 200 slides. You

59:18 that sounds like a lot of isn't it? But if I take

59:20 of those lectures and continued to condense down to two or three pages,

59:24 about 18 pages of notes. And would you rather read? 200 slides

59:29 18 pages of notes? Yeah, see here's the lie. It's a

59:33 of feathers or a pound of It's the same weight. The same

59:38 is just one is easier to comprehend I organized it. So it's the

59:44 information. All right now, here's good news. Our class has two

59:49 questions that you get to answer. and physiology. Anatomy is structured physiologist

59:54 . What's the structure and what does do? What's this do Hickey

59:58 Right. And in fact, that's of what we did in the

60:01 My boss pulled out this organ one because we weren't anonymous. You

60:04 like I wonder what this is and wonder what it does. And then

60:07 started asking questions. That's how the works. Alright. So that's what

60:11 is. What's the structures? We're look at what our structures and what

60:14 they do, What how do they the bodywork and the good news?

60:18 already know in really basic terms how body works. We're gonna look at

60:21 the very first day on the very couple of minutes on thursday. What

60:26 are the things that we actually do ? So that we can then

60:29 okay, well, we know So now we just now have to

60:31 and get down to the details to how it actually works. It's kind

60:34 like looking at the engine of the . You're like, well that's an

60:38 . I know it makes the car . It's like, all right,

60:40 . We're one step ahead of where were before. We was like,

60:44 a car, right? And that's we're gonna do. We're gonna work

60:47 way down. So that's the same that you should be doing is working

60:51 . Alright. So, in terms thinking about this is true for every

60:55 , a lecture is simply a series learning objectives. The things that I

60:59 you to understand and know. what you wanna do is be able

61:03 identify those learning objectives. All Those are the sub topics. If

61:07 talking about the skin, the learning . What's the epidermis? What's the

61:12 , That sort of thing. And then the differences in the descriptive

61:16 them are the facts. All I'm gonna do something real quick.

61:20 name? James and your daniella. is the difference between James and

61:27 Lots of them. I'm sure we probably come up with a list of

61:30 1000 different things. Right? They different names because they're different.

61:36 That's how anatomy works. I name differently because it's different than that

61:42 Alright. So whenever you see a name, ask that question, how

61:45 this different than the thing that I learned about? Okay, it's a

61:49 simple metaphor. Alright, so, questions that you're gonna have, we're

61:53 follow each lecture there, helping you clearly what these things are and teach

61:58 how to identify them. Once you how to identify learning objectives, Learning

62:04 easy. The easy way to do . Using easy a lot here.

62:09 ? Because many of your kind of of going to walk out there

62:11 this is tough stuff. This is easy part. What did I learn

62:16 ? It doesn't matter what classroom in , what did I learn today?

62:20 you can come up with an you I can figure out what you're

62:23 objectives are. If you walk out a class point, I have no

62:26 what I learned. One of two happened. Either. Professor really

62:29 And that that's a possibility. I've had bad professors too. But

62:35 other possibilities. I wasn't paying All right. And we have to

62:39 those when that happens. All So be aware. Alright. Things

62:46 do when you're taking your notes and during this small period of time.

62:50 . Don't write everything you see on slide, what you're doing is you're

62:53 and you're looking at you're trying to out information. Alright. So really

62:57 write down the important information, explains it is that you're trying to

63:00 Alright, condense the topics down to facts that are important. Anyone ever

63:04 this to a textbook? Yeah. knew people who had read that

63:10 I'm just gonna use a highlighter. are the pair regrets that I've

63:14 Alright, don't do that. All . The idea is you're trying to

63:17 information down. Don't write everything verbatim. Use your own words and

63:22 . There's gonna be times when you're need to use their language but really

63:26 help you understand something is explaining it yourself. That's what notes are

63:31 right? So, the idea is of examples. Alright, I do

63:36 all the time when we go in cardiovascular system in A. And

63:39 Two. I'm like, think about highway system and all of a sudden

63:42 becomes clear, right? If you think about highways and roads, it's

63:46 , okay, now I understand arteries veins. Alright, So sometimes thinking

63:50 this is this like this this seems lot like that. And so it

63:53 you understand it Also when you're writing , you're not writing full sentences,

63:58 and pictures are gonna be your All right now if you look up

64:01 this, it's a really complex looking . But what what you can imagine

64:04 is that the person who did this a picture of the heart a little

64:07 more detail than I would have done is how I draw the heart.

64:11 I'm lecturing about the heart of this the heart. It has four

64:19 Do you see you don't have to an artist to do this type of

64:23 and we can walk and do But what they probably did, they

64:25 with that really nice picture and then started adding details as they're explaining it

64:30 themselves and what you're looking at is product of the explanation. Not the

64:35 thing that they have to memorize. right. They're talking to themselves.

64:40 by the way, good learners talk themselves. Not necessarily out loud but

64:44 out loud. All right. Look you go to the grocery store with

64:49 list, have you ever done that someplace with a list of stuff?

64:52 . Right. Do you write full to yourself when you do that?

64:56 need cheese. I need american No no because you already know what

65:02 of cheese you want. You just that list reminds you Oh yeah I

65:06 go down this aisle. Right. so that's kind of the same

65:08 Is that when you're studying use abbreviations help stir your memory up. Alright

65:15 use uh the abbreviations to speed up process again. I don't want you

65:21 three hours reading the book and then hours working on your notes and then

65:25 hours. That's that's ridiculous. It be. Boom boom boom. When

65:30 read, you read for fun, for pleasure, right? Even though

65:33 not pretend like you are, I'm in this ergo, I'm reading it

65:38 just kind of pick up the I'm writing this information down, so

65:41 have something to study later when I'm for the exam. All right

65:48 I came from a different time and right, when you study, don't

65:52 unfocused. Alright, how many of does this sound like you when you

65:57 , you sit down the table or desk, you put your materials

66:01 you sit down for five minutes and like I can't study. The bathroom

66:04 an absolute mess and you go into bathroom and you get in there and

66:08 do a real good job of cleaning toothbrush behind the toilet type stuff

66:13 And then you get that clean. that's good and then you go sit

66:15 again. Well I can't say now hungry from all that work and so

66:19 go into the kitchen and you go yourself a meal and then after you're

66:22 well I gotta clean the meal now then you clean up after yourself in

66:25 kitchen and then you go back you sit down and stay for two

66:28 minutes? And you get on your and you get twitter and you're like

66:30 , I've been studying for four Mhm. You have been studying for

66:35 hours. You've been studying for six , right? So remember if you're

66:40 study like that you might as well out and have fun because the better

66:44 is I failed the exam because I a road trip to Mexico. Then

66:48 clean the toilet. Right? When study, you study when you

66:52 you play define your times, And like I said when I started

66:56 this, I was like, I 30 minutes if I can't get my

66:59 done in 30 minutes tough. I'm beer. Right? So my time

67:05 was 30 minutes. Figure out for . When I sit down to

67:09 I'm studying when I'm playing. I'm do it. All well, all

67:15 . If you use your time wisely get more do more important things.

67:21 I said, different time for All right. Um I usually draw

67:25 picture here. I'm not gonna do , but basically you can do the

67:27 system and it doesn't you don't need be an artist to draw. I

67:31 , you've already seen that there's my . Um I could do the digestive

67:36 , hit everything. Well, what hell? I want to show you

67:45 got to get out the pin. , remember I'm a world class

67:53 Alright, so this is an example drawing the digestive system, Here's the

67:57 , here's the esophagus, here's a , here's a small intestine, here's

68:02 large intestine, that's the anus, , gallbladder, liver. You're looking

68:12 that going man, I don't know the hell that is like. My

68:15 brother could have done that. he could have right? But remember

68:19 drawing for whom? For me, ? And so I can go in

68:24 I can start saying here's the give me my little definitions, here's

68:26 esophagus is what it does, here's stomach, it does a lot of

68:29 things. Here is the small it does a lot of things.

68:32 intestine doesn't do that much and I define these things. I can literally

68:35 the whole digestive system on one piece paper, right? When I teach

68:40 digestive system in A. And It's a three lecture class and I

68:43 get it all in one piece of . Right? So the idea here

68:47 if you organize yourself and You know not sitting there ladies, I'm not

68:52 fun of you but 90% of the would come and talk to me,

68:55 me their notes, it's color coded you're gonna color code stuff. Just

69:00 I'm adding time to my study time that's okay, you know you get

69:04 govern your study time but recognize if putting my own things like,

69:10 I've got to have colors or I've to be nice and neat and have

69:14 handwriting as opposed to the chicken scratch that dr wayne has. That's on

69:19 . You're adding your own time in me. I'd rather go out and

69:21 a beer. All right. when you study creating your own

69:26 no longer, shouldn't take longer than minutes, it's gonna take a little

69:29 if this is the first time you've done it right? It's just like

69:33 . The first time I do it's going to take it a little

69:35 more time than when I become better it. Alright, So this is

69:39 that you've been doing it for a , you know how to take

69:42 right? So it might take you minutes to an hour. Uh I

69:45 30 minutes to an hour for each of class that you have. And

69:48 what you're doing is you want to this right after class, this is

69:52 your information, it's blocking that for this right and you're preparing the material

69:57 you're ultimately going to study for the because when we study for the

70:00 you don't want to be going back the book. You don't want to

70:02 going back to uh to the you want to be sticking to what

70:06 think is important. All right. when you study for the exam,

70:10 I want you to do is I want you to read your notes.

70:13 right. This is where it becomes . The things I'm gonna I'm gonna

70:17 you alright to show you how to the best you can be. All

70:21 , 90% of you. When you , you read your notes and I'm

70:24 tell you right now, that's the worst form of studying ever. It's

70:29 least efficient and least uh you're gonna the lowest grade you can earn in

70:34 that particular class. Alright. Well, first off, humans are

70:39 good liars. We love to lie ourselves, right? So, what

70:43 do is we basically say like we going through the notes. Tell me

70:46 this sounds like you're going through your , you're like hiding it from

70:49 You're looking okay? I got this . You look down to your

70:51 It's the exact wrong answer. And going to remember it next time you

70:56 lie to yourself, you're not gonna the next time you just told yourself

71:00 to make yourself feel good. Because thing we'd like to do is we

71:03 like to feel bad about ourselves. like to feel good about ourselves.

71:05 here like to feel bad about No, we all like to feel

71:09 about ourselves, right? And so we do is we tend to focus

71:13 the things that we already know because makes us feel smart. So that's

71:20 we study. We focus, we moving over here. I know this

71:23 , so I'm gonna keep going over . This is my comfort zone.

71:26 ignore all the stuff that we don't why. That makes me feel

71:31 It feels like I don't know stuff me feel like I shouldn't be in

71:33 profession. Maybe I should go to school. Right? So what we

71:38 to do is we have to force to get out of our comfort zone

71:42 get to our discomfort zone because guess questions you're missing on the exams?

71:47 stuff that you don't know, So reading doesn't help us do

71:53 What we have to do is we to play a game with ourselves.

71:56 want to test ourselves. And this mean writing quiz. Let's you want

71:59 write quiz. Let's just add an two or three hours to your time

72:03 right now. If your notes have you need to know, and that's

72:08 you have to know for the test you don't know what's gonna be on

72:10 test exactly, right? This is much you have to know for the

72:13 . This is how much you're gonna tested on, Right? There's only

72:16 questions. If you have to Six lectures of material. I don't

72:20 six lectures of questions on the otherwise you'll be there all day,

72:25 ? So it's basically it's it's a Types of questions. So what do

72:29 do? Alright, take my I've already written them all out,

72:33 ? I took six days to do . 30 minutes after each class.

72:36 days Like three hours worth of I'm going to set that over to

72:41 side. Not not going to look it. I'm gonna get a blank

72:44 of paper. The dreaded blank piece paper. Have you ready to write

72:48 paper? Was the first thing you when you write a paper, put

72:51 name. Why blank piece of paper's if I put my name on it

72:55 no longer blanket means I've started All . So you can do that if

72:59 want to. But what you that piece of paper, this is what

73:01 want you to do. I want to start thinking about the first thing

73:04 learn and I want to start writing everything that you learned in class.

73:07 right, go through the first go to the second lecture. Third

73:10 . Fourth lecture. Fifth lecture six , write down everything that you

73:14 after you've written down everything, you , That's when you take that piece

73:16 paper, those notes that you spent much time, three hours working

73:20 turn them over and do a compare everything you wrote down on that piece

73:24 paper is something you know, congratulate Everything you didn't write down is something

73:31 don't know and now you've got to yourself. It's not bad punishment.

73:38 right. What I do is oh, I wrote this over here

73:40 I didn't write it over there. , well, let me write it

73:43 . All right. Why do I that? Because there's something about writing

73:48 down that slows the brain down and you're involved, You're not just turning

73:51 brain off. You're going, This something I need to know. And

73:55 kind of like writing lines. Did guys ever write lines when you're like

73:58 third grade? You did? Alright. If you went to catholic

74:04 or if you are as old you you wrote lines at some

74:08 right? It's like the little old made you spit the gum out in

74:10 hand. You didn't have that If you chew gum in school,

74:14 like, spit it out, spit out and you're like, no things

74:20 changed a little bit alright, but lines I will not do helps you

74:25 I won't do this again because this and that's what kind of what you're

74:28 I'm writing out because it sucks and what you're gonna do, you're gonna

74:31 everything everything you didn't write down the time or right over here, you're

74:35 rewrite everything that you got wrong, out and correct after you've done

74:39 Take a break 15 minutes, 20 . Just a netflix show.

74:44 Your favorite Youtube Hero. Right? you take that scratch paper, throw

74:49 away, take your original notes, them over, repeat. First time

74:54 do this, it's going to Not kind of suck, suck a

74:58 , suck. I'm rethinking doing I want to go back to my

75:01 methods. Rethinking, I don't Want to be an Mp. I

75:04 to be in business where they don't to work so hard. Alright.

75:09 all that stuff. But if you this what you're gonna see the first

75:11 , it's gonna suck. Maybe 5 of the information is right. The

75:14 time you do it, you're gonna 20% of the information right next time

75:17 do it, you're gonna get about or 40% next time you do it

75:19 60%. The next time you're gonna it about 70 or 80% repeat this

75:23 or 67 times. However many times need until you get it down

76:36 gonna tell you this now. I you to internalize exams. The only

76:40 of an exam is to determine whether not you learn the information in the

76:44 . Alright. Whether you learned what asked you to learn, tells you

76:47 about you as a person. It define who you are. It doesn't

76:52 any of the things that you are on top of it. It's not

76:54 define whether or not you're accomplished enough better are ready to go on to

77:01 future profession. That's not what exams simply says. I asked you to

77:06 these topics. Did you learn? if you put anything on top of

77:09 exam other than that, then you're your own barriers. Try not to

77:15 that. All right. I don't my watch here. What time do

77:18 got here? Oh, we got minutes. All right. Ask questions

77:39 tool that they're designed to do. not going to tell you what's on

77:41 exam. They just show you how write a question and the last thing

77:46 want to do that you can look that. That's just basically what I

77:49 told you. This is the last I want you to do is multiple

77:52 exams. Alright. A lot of don't understand multiple choice exams. It's

77:56 simple. I always go to. first question, worked. The last

77:59 you want to go to. The question. First question. You're screwing

78:01 up already. Just be a human down page. Alright. one read

78:06 first question come up with an answer your head. If the answer is

78:10 the list, pick it. If not there, skip the question move

78:13 . Alright don't analyze. Don't go beyond that. Go through the entire

78:18 like that. Get all the easy out of the way. Alright,

78:21 50 questions I told you the average the exam in the 60. That

78:25 60% of the question. Should be type questions. Those low level questions

78:29 get you those points to get you above the failing threshold. Alright so

78:34 the first level question. We'll get the entire exam in about 15

78:37 Alright then you go to the second questions. All right. You go

78:39 to the first question. You you come up with an answer in

78:42 head right? You look at, go through the list now. Start

78:45 about what those questions are, what answers say, right, I'm gonna

78:48 you an example. The color of sky is what color blue. You

78:51 through the list, you don't see . You skip it, you go

78:53 it the second time and you come something that says as you're well that's

78:57 really blue. I'll just use like ladies. You know what I'm talking

79:01 Guys are gonna I don't know what talking about. All right,

79:04 you're like oh cornflowers, a color blue. This is making me think

79:08 little harder. Right? That's that next level. Alright let's say you're

79:13 guy and you don't know what the cornflower is. I don't know.

79:16 flowers skip the question, Go keep answering. Come back again.

79:21 time through the color of the sky blue. All right. You can

79:27 looking well it's not green, it's red, not orange. Right?

79:33 I got this strange corn flour Alright, well, maybe that's the

79:38 . All right, So that's when do the eliminations. Alright, let's

79:41 you go through eliminations. You still figure out you got two choices.

79:45 don't know right? You got verden corn flour and I don't know if

79:51 is you know what the hell is flour, skip it, Come back

79:54 fourth time. It's like Alright, last question, I don't know what

79:57 do. Here flip the coin, an answer. Alright, that's

80:03 It's the last question. Not a checking the test is the one that

80:08 everybody. What's going to happen when check an exam, remember this is

80:12 true false statement, right? There's correct answer and then there's three or

80:17 incorrect answers. So what you do the question, Read the answer.

80:20 it makes a true statement, move . If it doesn't go back and

80:24 it and the reason I go back fix and change, right? The

80:28 we do this is because you studied much information. I'm asking about this

80:32 information. So your brain is gonna looking for places to put information

80:36 It's like I know I studied stuff you're gonna come across and say the

80:40 of the sky is you say the , the answer is blue and you've

80:42 things like green and orange and red yellow and gray, you're gonna be

80:46 , oh well if it's red maybe is the the sunset question, If

80:49 great, maybe this is the cloud if it's green, you know there

80:52 that time, you know when the comes down over the ocean, there's

80:55 this one minute where the green, come up with any sort of

81:00 put your answer in there. So you read the color of the sky

81:03 red, you'd be like I am on mars that makes no sense.

81:07 can go back and change the But if I'm reading all the answers

81:10 gonna confuse myself so question answer if true, leave it alone if it's

81:16 , you're out of there, fix . You got readings starting in 13
