00:02 Oh, hello everybody. This um, what I would call the

00:06 video for uh biology 23 01. hope everyone is nice and warm and

00:13 and sound uh for this. what do we call this?

00:18 very sunny but very cold day. , this class is that and physiology

00:24 . we meet in Agnes Arts. , Agnes Arnold Auditorium. So that's

00:29 little tiny building uh near the social . And so this is, uh

00:33 meet uh 830 to 10 a.m. And had you, uh gotten up this

00:39 ? It would have been very, cold and we would have in that

00:41 cold room. I'm Dr Wayne. , I am the professor for this

00:46 . Uh You can see here my information. Uh I'm in uh Sr

00:51 which is the science and research Um, if you were going from

00:56 Arnold uh hall or the auditorium to offices, which you'll see here.

01:01 office hours follows class. Um, you would head out as if you're

01:06 to the big uh building that's to west as if you're going towards the

01:14 parking garage and then instead of going the big building, you'd head north

01:19 the little tiny building that's next that's SR two and I'm up on

01:23 second floor. Uh, they're doing that new construction right next door to

01:27 . So it's very easy to kind miss that smaller four story building.

01:32 , in the midst of all that . Uh, the easy way to

01:34 in contact with me is to email . My email is here C Wayne

01:38 uh dot edu. Um I usually emails between nine and 430. Um

01:46 don't answer emails. Usually in the . I like to go home

01:50 and relax. I don't like to my work home with me unless I

01:54 have to. So if you need contact me, this is the easiest

01:58 to do. So you notice there is no phone numbers and that's

02:02 because the university has gone to a IP system using MS teams and I

02:07 have that turned on and frankly, just get really irritated by it.

02:12 , uh this is gonna be the way to contact me or you can

02:15 by, um, during my office . Uh, my office hours are

02:19 after class. So we'll meet from to 10 and then, uh,

02:23 after class, from 10 till about , I have office hours. I

02:28 another class starting at 1130. That's we end around 1115, if you

02:33 meet during those times. Uh, you gotta do is email me,

02:35 can make an appointment and I'll be to meet with you sometime that works

02:40 both of us. So, what we have going on here?

02:46 first off, uh, make sure read your syllabus. This is basically

02:50 , um, end user license agreement . Ya, it outlines everything that

02:54 need to know about the course, what the policies for the course

02:57 which are taken uh by uh not departmental but university standards talks about the

03:03 honesty policy. It outlines in essence we're going to do in the course

03:09 is basically saying this is what we on doing, this is how you're

03:13 earn your grade. And you're saying you read this and when you take

03:17 classes that you're going to abide by rules of the course. And so

03:21 everything you need to know about the , anything uh that includes grading that

03:27 um uh when tests are, when are due, everything is gonna be

03:31 there. Of course, you can go on the blackboard or excuse me

03:35 the canvas and the syllabus is also as well. Just some general policy

03:42 that you should be aware of. anything you need to know about the

03:45 can be found through the search Uh just go to uh dot edu

03:50 there at the top, you'll see big old, uh, um,

03:54 symbol for the search. And what can do is just type in any

03:58 of term that you want and most will be found almost instantaneously that

04:03 But really some of the key uh you should know when you're,

04:06 , when some of the important dates . So the last day to drop

04:10 class without any sort of grade will January 31st. It's what is called

04:14 um uh the ORP or the uh day when um uh all the roles

04:25 officially due. So, um I Orp, it's ord it's official Role

04:31 . Um So, but uh if still in the class by that

04:34 if you are now officially in the , uh you will get a

04:39 whether it's uh a letter grade or W uh the last day to drop

04:43 class with a W. So if not comfortable with your grade and you

04:49 deciding not to stay in the That last day with a withdraw A

04:53 is on the 17th of April, is really towards the very end of

04:56 semester. Uh There are other dates the calendar that you probably will find

05:02 , that is easy to find the calendar, just type in the search

05:07 academic calendar and it will pop up it will give you every date that's

05:12 and necessary or you know, so example, if you are a graduating

05:16 , it will show you dates when are due. Uh It will give

05:20 a link to when uh the final period is um uh what dates are

05:26 um the last day of class, date is uh spring break this

05:31 that sort of stuff. So that be in the academic calendar. Uh

05:35 , uh the uh you should be with the undergraduate catalog in general.

05:40 are the rules by which you are underneath the uh umbrella of the

05:44 But one of the important ones is honesty. Basically, it says,

05:48 lie, don't cheat, don't but that doesn't really say anything.

05:52 so it kind of outlines what the are for that and what your rights

05:57 as a student. So that's probably that you should probably look into if

06:02 a student who has a need for certain sorts of accessibility that can be

06:07 through uh uhwdu uh slash accessibility. if you can't remember that, just

06:13 accessibility into that search engine and you get that information as well. So

06:19 use canvas as our learning management Um It is not the first semester

06:24 uh it is something that we're still to learn um as faculty. Many

06:29 you who had it in high it's not an issue. But for

06:32 that this is something um prior to semester, we were using board for

06:38 14 years plus. So this is the announcements are. This is where

06:42 can find core syllabus and general Any time I have something for you

06:47 the powerpoints assignments, anything will be there. And I'll show you how

06:52 navigate uh what's important for you guys at the end of this video.

06:56 I also record these lectures uh in . I do not recommend not coming

07:02 class. In fact, if you on using the lectures solely, uh

07:06 video recording lectures solely as a means studying, you can go ahead and

07:09 on either getting ac or, or in the course because there is a

07:15 correlation between uh attending class and um performing well in class. But in

07:22 , the gist of it is, I do want to record lectures.

07:24 if you do miss a class or you miss a, a point or

07:29 in class, you have uh uh know, something to go back

07:33 to go and listen to should you to. And lastly the grade book

07:37 I have here mostly inaccurate grades. less. So, um once I've

07:42 of explored the, the grade book semester, I see that it's a

07:45 bit more accurate than blackboard is. so this is a way uh since

07:49 doing everything through um canvas um or uh things that are delivered to

07:56 um including your exams. Uh The are pretty well calculated there.

08:00 um anyway, that's where your grades and you keep track of your

08:05 The textbook that we use in this is called anatomy and physiology and

08:09 Um It's uh what, what I to over and over again as top

08:14 . So when you hear Top that's usually the textbook and the assignments

08:19 come out of it. And so a link directly to the top hat

08:23 um in canvas um that you can to. And so there is gonna

08:28 reading every class period that you have have before you come to class.

08:32 also um part of that reading assignment questions that need to be answered.

08:37 that's gonna be part of your grade there are some other assignments out of

08:40 head as well. Some homework assignments come from another uh product which is

08:47 Connect. Um It's really the whole is called A P the A MP

08:51 Suite, which is just a fancy for all the parts that are

08:55 But for your purposes, connect is it is. And again, these

08:58 access through connect. And since most you are using C tap, you've

09:02 have it. And so it's easy easily assessed or assess accessible the way

09:08 my courses are designed typically, especially this is an early level course.

09:13 we call a freshman level course, though it has a 2000 level uh

09:17 to it is I try to design courses to help train you to approach

09:24 in a way that will lead to success. All right. And so

09:27 that means is, is I've spent lot of time over the last couple

09:30 years trying to hone in on how make students learn. And so this

09:35 kind of the, the pinnacle of that is. And so what we

09:39 is we i, the way that give you information is in a very

09:42 fashion. So I have an expectation you're going to do something before

09:46 you're gonna do something in class and gonna do something out of class.

09:49 so the idea here is before the , you're gonna be reading textbook,

09:53 is gonna expose you to the ideas the concepts that we're gonna be

09:58 Um oh and how we approach I'm gonna uh describe a little bit

10:02 here. Uh Secondly, uh you to class, you listen to

10:05 And so here now is what we're is we're focusing in on the concepts

10:09 you, you read about in the in the assignment before class. And

10:14 what we're gonna do is we're gonna the things that you've learned, but

10:17 also kind of getting rid of all material that's unimportant and we're getting,

10:22 to focus in on those important And so when you come to

10:26 what you should be doing is you be taking notes and making notes for

10:30 so that you have things that you use to study for the exam.

10:33 we're, if we're focusing in, basically telling you this is what you

10:37 to know in order for you to . And so that's why you take

10:40 in class and show up to And after class, what you're gonna

10:43 is you're gonna have homework assignments. so the idea here is I am

10:47 to practice what I learned and demonstrate myself that I'm actually learning the

10:52 There's also other work that is not , which is, hey, um

10:56 need to kind of reorganize myself and this material in such a way that

11:02 makes the most sense to me. so the idea behind all three of

11:07 is that you're getting exposure to the material multiple times so that you're actually

11:13 ingraining that information into your, into brain and into your memory. And

11:20 um in another video here, um going to describe the process of how

11:25 go about doing all that. If was a lecture, I would do

11:29 the, the, the introduction and how to study video at the same

11:36 . So let's talk about what these actually are. All right. So

11:40 say we have these top assignment that's of your textbook. This is about

11:44 of your final grade. These are that you have to do.

11:48 uh if you want to earn that you do these assignments, there's two

11:51 types of assignments. The first is reading assignment. This is what you

11:55 before the lecture. So today is orientation. Our first class of actual

12:02 is gonna be Thursday the 18th of . And so between now and

12:07 there's an expectation you're gonna read the reading assignment within that first reading

12:13 there are going to be in chapter , right? Um uh Dealing with

12:19 reading as you're going along. All . So these assignments always open up

12:23 after class. So at 10 a.m. morning, that this particular assignment for

12:29 has already opened up and it will open until uh right before class

12:35 So at 830 that assignment closed. the expectation is is you're reading before

12:39 come to class. If you fail read before class, you're not getting

12:42 for it. Now, with that said, we're in this period that's

12:48 the official reporting day ord. And those first three assignments as I get

12:54 adding into the class, I want keep them open for everybody rather than

12:59 , oh, I've joined the class I'm, I need you to reopen

13:02 assignment. So the first three assignments an extended, uh, opening until

13:08 30th. Now, when I say that does not mean blow it off

13:12 the 30th. I would start practicing you're supposed to be doing for the

13:18 because if you wait until the last , you're gonna have more reading and

13:21 gonna be able to handle and you're miss out on one understanding the

13:26 which is really the more important thing two on the grades that you're trying

13:29 do. And let's face it before started this semester. You probably said

13:33 gonna do things differently to ensure that successful. And so here's your opportunity

13:38 start living into that. Uh Promise made to yourself. That's the first

13:45 of assignment is the pre lecture, assignments done before class. Then after

13:51 , a new assignment in top head up. Now this still counts part

13:54 the 10% of your grades. So lots of points in here. All

13:58 . And what this does is it up after class and there are these

14:01 hand, open ended questions that deal what we talked about in class.

14:07 really it covers what you read but it also focuses in and what

14:11 doing here is I'm asking you some specific questions that deal with what you're

14:16 to learn what we refer to as learning objectives. And so they might

14:20 like, explain this idea, list things uh you know, identify,

14:27 . So they're more of an open thing. And what they're trying,

14:30 I'm trying to do in these types exercises is to help you focus in

14:33 hone in on the important ideas that trying to learn in this particular

14:40 right? And in essence, what trying to do is you're trying to

14:44 create those notes, those materials that gonna use to help study for the

14:48 . So they're based on the But if you don't know the

14:52 you can go and either listen to old lecture or the recorded lecture or

14:56 can go back to the textbook and those answers. Should you need

14:59 So those are the top hat uh assignments. 10% of your grade,

15:04 other 10% comes from connect. the connect assignments either more a typical

15:09 the type of assignments you're used to multiple choice, you know, the

15:13 in the blank, the matching those of things. All right. And

15:17 again, these are gonna be assignments open up after class and notice we

15:21 two different types of homework assignments that up after class. All right.

15:25 , these are gonna be open until the next day. So Thursday is

15:30 first class where we have a lecture after class at 10, it's going

15:37 the homework assignment opens up and then would happen is, is that that

15:41 would close at Friday at midnight. again, we're gonna have extended deadlines

15:47 for the first three assignments because of , uh, a drop period,

15:51 gonna go back to slide here. here we are at the top hat

15:54 . Those post lecture assignments, they up right after class, but they

16:00 the night before the exam. So have more time to work on these

16:05 of uh, uh open ended Whereas these homework as you have a

16:12 period of time because they're designed as , let me practice what I just

16:17 . Whereas these types of uh our are, let me help prepare myself

16:24 demonstrate to myself that I understand what is. I'm trying to learn.

16:28 right. So two different types of class homework assignments right now, coming

16:36 to the connect, what you'll see when you have these assignments that sometimes

16:43 will just be one assignment. All , they're all gonna be worth 100

16:46 . But just depending on what a on what we're, what we're learning

16:50 and what I want you to I have different types. So for

16:55 , in this particular case, I an assignment here, let me see

16:58 I can actually get the link uh ink working here, right? So

17:04 in this particular case, right here is one assignment. All right.

17:10 that would be what you'd see is a single assignment. But sometimes what

17:13 see is that you'll see three, two different assignments that fall into the

17:20 of connect. Now, these two groups, this one that's over

17:25 this lecture, one or sorry, lecture two assignment. And these

17:31 lecture, six assignments, they have the same number of questions. They're

17:36 coming from different sources. And so idea here is I'm trying to expose

17:41 maybe to, uh in this particular , I have this assignment here.

17:46 would be something where you're practicing actual , you're looking at uh anatomical

17:52 Whereas an assignment like this is an learning assignment where it's testing to see

17:58 or not you can answer questions about that we covered. All right.

18:02 there are different types of assignments but ultimately, the connect homework is

18:08 between 2040 questions. So on around 30 questions that you need to

18:15 and again, these come due right, the day after class.

18:24 this is kind of how it What is adaptive learning? These are

18:28 that are like more like flash Uh And what we do here is

18:33 , it'll ask you a question, , hey, do you think you

18:35 the answer to this? Then you to answer whether or not you know

18:39 or not? All right. So need to be truthful because what it's

18:42 is it's, it's basically building decks you based on that. And as

18:46 answer questions, it's kind of responding it's like, oh, you

18:49 you know this, but you're answering questions wrong. Well, you don't

18:52 know this. So we're probably gonna more questions at you about this or

18:56 the opposite is like, I don't I know this, but you keep

18:59 questions correctly about whatever the subject Well, it basically say no,

19:03 , you should be confident in this it will kind of build your decks

19:07 from the things you already know. you demonstrate that, you know,

19:11 apr questions as you see here, are those anatomy models I described,

19:15 might be some histology depending upon the we're looking at. And lastly,

19:18 third type of question are the ones you're more akin to or more familiar

19:22 , which are the multiple choice, gas, that sort of stuff.

19:26 , um they kind of have a of type types of questions there.

19:33 another type of assignment. We only one of these and that opens up

19:37 it should be opened up right And it's based upon what we're talking

19:40 in this light set. And it says, hey, did you watch

19:44 ? Did you pay attention? Do understand the structure of the class?

19:47 so this is just a little tiny assessment. Um And it's I call

19:52 an orientation quiz. It's not a . It's basically open ended, it

19:55 open until, uh, January You can repeat it as many times

19:59 you need to till you get a score. So it's not really in

20:02 quiz. It's basically saying, did pay attention to this? But it

20:06 included in the CONNECT grades. So connect is 10% of your grades take

20:13 little assessment um, before January And that goes into that same group

20:19 , of grades that are counted as . So that should be open now

20:25 you can go back and do that a right after this video.

20:30 this uh this slide describes a set questions that confuses everybody. And so

20:37 tried to make this as bad as as possible. All right.

20:41 so far, we've talked about a hat reading assignment that counts for a

20:46 . We've talked about a top hat class assignment that counts as a

20:51 And we've talked about connect questions that as a grade. These questions that

20:56 looking at here are gonna open um and do not count as a

21:01 . So you can see here. already said, do not count for

21:04 . All right. Some students have to me after, you know,

21:08 , hey, it's time to study the test and I've done all my

21:10 and I need more questions. I questions, questions to practice.

21:14 my personal opinion, this is not best way to study, but I'm

21:18 gonna deny you something that you And so top ad has uh end

21:23 uh end of chapter or uh review that they have available. And so

21:29 was like, hey, all let me give you more questions.

21:31 give you these. So these questions found in Top Hat. All

21:36 they look like this you see in , they say review. All

21:40 When you see that you can see how many points they don't have any

21:44 assigned to them. All right. you do not need to do

21:47 You can, you can do this you want to. Now when they

21:51 up is right before the test. on the very last class, right

21:57 the exam at right after class. class always ends at 10 o'clock right

22:01 that, these will become available. so it has a study guide.

22:05 it kind of lists all the different that you learned about. It has

22:09 review questions that if you want to review questions, you can do them

22:13 then I close these uh right after exam day. So the uh you

22:18 your exam during the day and then midnight, they just shut off.

22:21 these are just there because um you , like I said, students asked

22:26 them do not confuse these questions with other open ended top hat questions.

22:33 had students who have ignored the top open ended questions thinking they're review

22:37 They are not, those are to , these are not to do and

22:42 tell you in the name, look the points and see how much things

22:46 worth and it will show you that you shouldn't even be able to see

22:50 until right before the exam. anything that has been assigned to

22:54 um, during the whole unit is count for points. All right.

23:00 that's the idea they're there if you them. So, when are our

23:07 ? Well, we have four Each of these exams are one hour

23:10 . Each of them have 50 This is very standard for the industry

23:14 the fields that you guys are going . I say that count 100 points

23:17 . So just two points per All right. So where do we

23:20 the exams? We take them at . All right. If you're just

23:25 this semester at U of H uh to Casa dot uh dot uh dot

23:31 . And it will describe it's just testing center. There's three of them

23:34 campus. They'll tell us which ones go to uh when you sign up

23:38 I'll show you um you should have link um uh uh on CASA that

23:44 says, hey, uh or on that shows you where the CASA link

23:48 . We'll get to that in just moment. Anyway, four dates.

23:50 first test is February 8th. Then next test is gonna be March

23:56 That's the Thursday right before spring And we have one in April

24:00 So you can see you take three even before the W date and then

24:03 last one, the way this semester it, it, we have,

24:07 , fewer classes. So your last is during the final exam period on

24:13 7th. So that's a Tuesday, , in the middle of the finals

24:17 . All right. So we have exams spread almost equally throughout the

24:21 So it's roughly every six lectures, or six lectures. You'll have an

24:26 . All right now because our um, we have a class of

24:30 and you're going to the testing center the days that we have exams,

24:33 do not come to class. if you show up to the lecture

24:36 expecting to take an exam, that's gonna happen. If you come to

24:41 hall expecting, you're gonna get a . No one's gonna be there.

24:44 right. What you need to do you need to go at your designated

24:49 to when you, the, the time for your exam, which you

24:53 when you signed up and we'll talk how you do that. All

24:57 Um, the other thing about these , I do not have cumulative

25:00 So at the end of the my expectations, I'm testing you on

25:05 material that you learned in that So on that fourth exam, all

25:10 doing is we're only covering the material we covered in that fourth unit.

25:15 not asking you questions from the 2nd or third unit. All

25:19 the expectation is, is you learn material. So you should know that

25:24 and truthfully in the sciences, everything on the on other things. So

25:29 you are falling behind those later get harder and harder because of the

25:34 . It's kind of like math. if you don't learn how to add

25:36 subtract calculus becomes not impossible because you learn your basic arithmetic. All

25:42 So that's kind of the idea Now, the other thing is this

25:45 I wanna make sure you guys you can't skip an exam. I

25:48 drop your lowest test score. If take an exam, my expectation is

25:54 worked on it. And so I'm going to drop low scores,

25:58 You, you put effort in. why throw away effort? So treat

26:03 exam um equally they are all You have to do well in all

26:08 them. Um OK, so before go there, I'm gonna just describe

26:13 little bit about pasta. I'm gonna a slide for it, but let

26:16 just describe very briefly. All So um actually, uh I

26:22 I'm over here and we are going go and look all right. So

26:31 can see here that I'm circling, CASA right there. So when you

26:37 to uh web page or to this is, this is where all

26:42 action is gonna take place. What want to do is I'm just pointing

26:45 Casa to you. I'm gonna click it right now because I don't think

26:49 is really accessible. But if if you have registered for uh a

26:55 and have taken the exams at Casa then, the only thing you need

26:58 do is click this button two weeks the first exam and schedule an

27:04 If this is your first semester at of H, you need to go

27:07 the CASA website, which I think can click here. Uh And if

27:10 doesn't let you do that, you to go to Casa dot uh dot

27:13 or you can just go to that page and type in CASA and just

27:17 there. And the idea is, they just need to have an account

27:21 you've set up. And so you to this, uh, what you

27:25 is time to take the exam two before you take the exam. Casa

27:30 up the sign up sheet for that . All right. So basically that's

27:34 scheduler. And what you do is can select a slot during the middle

27:38 the day or at any time during day that's available to take your

27:42 So for example, you log in the scheduler, you want to take

27:47 exam early in the day because you want to get it out of the

27:51 you look. Is there an availability 9 a.m. Yes, there is.

27:54 you just click on the slot. now have that slot. You're assigned

27:59 show up to CASA at that So day of the exam you show

28:05 , I would always show up 15 early. You have no idea what

28:09 of traffic you're gonna be dealing You have no idea what the line

28:11 gonna look like. Whatever it is make sure you show up because at

28:16 certain time and I think it's 10 might be 15 minutes. But if

28:19 , if you uh get up to counter and the exam is started and

28:24 10 to 15 minutes late, they not let you and you've missed your

28:28 . So you've been forewarned. So not an excuse. Oh,

28:31 you know, leave early, don't until the last minute to get

28:35 But what you do is you show to your exam, take your

28:39 the exam score will show up here blackboard because uh basically the exam is

28:45 administered or said blackboard through canvas. your exam is being administered through

28:50 So that's in essence, what's going here. All right. So let's

28:56 back to um the, the So just for your sake. This

29:03 the front page of what you'd see you log into canvas. You should

29:06 all these little tiny uh icons, icons lead you to things. So

29:11 is uh how you'd assess or how access your materials. So getting started

29:17 kind of like the generic. welcome to this class and it kind

29:20 gives you tells you where everything So if you ever get lost,

29:23 can always uh go there. Uh is your syllabus just like the syllabus

29:28 you can download. This is an way to uh get all that

29:33 Um You'll see here also that I'm an older example. So this is

29:39 from last year, but it's the thing. This is the page

29:42 This link right here is the page to access uh everything, right?

29:49 the, the thing that I just you that was the modules page.

29:53 is where everything is. And so uh when, when you come on

29:57 black or on the canvas, this probably where you'll go first because this

30:01 the way you access everything. if you have any uh questions about

30:05 class, you can go to the Q. Uh This is kind of

30:09 university thing. They give you all uh links to all your, all

30:12 resources. And lastly if you need know when my office hours or how

30:16 get me, this is the easy to do that. Um, because

30:19 all the information that's found there. last thing, um, that you'll

30:24 , uh, there is a little that's recordings. This is,

30:28 where you'll get the recordings or go the recordings for this semester. And

30:33 from that site, if you want go find something that's older, you

30:37 go and access those older recordings, , uh, through searching that

30:41 Now, let me just talk about really briefly. Um It's the,

30:45 , the link that we'll be using the website is called video points.org

30:50 That's just a fancy uh website that computer science department has created. So

30:56 not like going to a, a or a privately held company. It

31:02 literally the University of Houston that's running , it's a project that uh graduate

31:07 over computer science are doing as part their phd work. And so,

31:12 it's basically a mockup of something that trying to create um as a uh

31:17 a product. All right. So it says something, for example,

31:22 you'll get uh errors like, this is not a safe site.

31:25 , it is. It's, it's safe site because it's being run

31:30 the university. All right, they software that sometimes need to be

31:35 You can just kind of ignore that say allow and you can go to

31:39 site. So that is the link it. It's all here on this

31:44 page now, just so that you a sense of what's going on.

31:50 can see here, this is basically a little over a week. So

31:54 can see here we go, go all the way through to another

31:58 and then here's a Tuesday. So an eight day and what, what

32:01 is trying to show you, what this look like for you as a

32:04 ? And so remember what I said before class, what you're gonna do

32:07 you're gonna read and you come to and you listen to the lecture and

32:12 right after class, the new reading opens up. So does the Connect

32:18 and so does the uh top hat open ended questions. All right.

32:24 I call it a lecture review. think of it as the review.

32:27 think of it as the top All right. That's the top hat

32:31 lecture questions. All right. And , these you can see they're open

32:36 the exam night, the night before exam. All right. Whereas everything

32:41 has a kind of a finite And so if this was Thursday,

32:45 next Thursday, right now you're going be reading starting today until right before

32:50 , the uh class on Thursday, what will happen is right after

32:55 the connect homework opens up that top review. Uh not the, the

33:01 free review, but the the post questions are gonna open up and those

33:06 remain open. And then you can over the weekend you have a longer

33:11 of time to read before the next . This is very, very

33:15 So it's a pattern that is repeatable and over, read lecture homework,

33:20 lecture homework. And you just do over and over and over again until

33:23 exam and we'll talk about how to for the exam later. Finally,

33:29 do do extra credit in this Um The way that the extra credit

33:34 is there is one that is open the exam and then there's one that's

33:38 up after the exam and you can the time. So the one that

33:41 up before the exam opens up at p.m. right before the exam and then

33:46 closes right before the exams open up the day. So there is no

33:51 if you forget, you know, , oh, I took my

33:54 It's 10 o'clock. I can go my credit. No, the the

33:56 of these assignments, everything has a . All right, is not just

34:00 give you free points. The purpose is to ask yourself, are you

34:03 for the exam? So these are easy extra credits. It's like two

34:07 of your time. It says, , did you study, how do

34:10 feel about the way you ST do feel comfortable with this particular material.

34:13 all it does. All right. then after the exam, about a

34:17 after the exam, after I know taking the exam, this is when

34:20 get the second assignment to open All right. And here it asks

34:24 , hey, you've now looked at exam, you have your score for

34:29 . You know how you thought you on the exam? Now, how

34:34 you think you're studying did relative to actual performance? And so what it's

34:39 to do is trying to get you think about how you performed. All

34:43 . And if you did well, you're like, hey, everything worked

34:46 . But if you didn't do then you can ask, ok,

34:48 I didn't do well, where didn't do well? And why didn't I

34:51 well, how do I change what been doing so that I can get

34:55 grade that I'm seeking? All And so the way that you do

34:59 extra credits. So it's just, , it's just a full survey.

35:02 right, there's a link on canvas says, hey, you can go

35:05 do these. But um, but you have to first, you have

35:09 log in through your Cougar Net. usually students who have a part time

35:14 , it's like I can't log I can't get it. It's because

35:16 not logging into your Cougar Net All right. So that's number

35:19 And then number two is um they open or they have very finite periods

35:25 time when you can do them. I would put in your calendar on

35:29 phone when these things do and get alert to pop up to say,

35:33 , have you done your extra credit ? That way you can get your

35:36 . All right, I do not extensions for extra credit. So if

35:40 miss it, you miss it the . Finally, this is kind of

35:47 easy thing just to remind you how grade is calculated. Uh We have

35:52 top hat assignment. So remember there's pre lecture reading, there's a post

35:57 , uh open ended review of the the material. I try to stay

36:01 from that review name just because of confusion. So it's the top hat

36:06 questions. All right, this is of your grade. And so the

36:10 that you can calculate this um is numbers will be racking up. And

36:15 how many points did I earn versus many points that were available? And

36:19 you can just do that percentile score then multiply by 0.1 that's 10% of

36:25 grade. All right. Secondly, you have the connect homework room where

36:29 are um opened up right after There's gonna be 25 assignments in

36:34 If you include that orientation that I that opens up or is available to

36:39 right now based on what we talked here and again, you just take

36:43 averages and then multiply by 0.1 that's . Finally, we have four

36:48 those four exams just take the that's 80% of your grade.

36:53 So you take, let's say you an average of 70 for the

36:57 It's 70 times 0.8 that to give 56 points plus the points that you

37:03 here, plus the points you have . That's your grade. This is

37:06 of what it looks like. If want to kind of put it all

37:09 there, you take your average of exams. If you want to add

37:11 your extra, your extra credit, can remember each extra credit is 2.5

37:16 . So there's a total of five per test. So you can

37:20 hey, I've taken one test. can get, I can get all

37:23 extra credit. I got five points so you can do that average multiply

37:27 0.8. What did you do for half? Multiplied by 0.1? What

37:30 I do for connect? Multiplied by canvas should calculate that for you,

37:35 it's not always going to do it in a rolling fashion. So you

37:41 to kind of be aware. Now are gonna see scores and they're gonna

37:46 . I'm just gonna tell you All right, you're in a science

37:49 now. Throw out what you're used thinking in terms of scores, 90

37:53 necessarily mean an eight. So I here, is there a curve for

37:57 class? We usually have a All right. My normal F range

38:02 , where it's like if you get this, it's failing, it's 50

38:06 always, always, always 50 So the range for ABC and D

38:13 going to be slightly different based upon course performance. In other words,

38:18 everyone in the class does. we see, we see a

38:22 I've, I think in the um years that I've been here, um

38:28 we've, we've never not had a , so there's always been one,

38:33 I wanna just make sure, if you guys do really well,

38:36 not gonna be a curve, everyone's A's I, I'm not going to

38:40 so that we get a SB C's D's, I'm gonna give everybody A's

38:43 everybody earns A's. All right. , what this means is that my

38:48 are based on statistical norm. So we do is we're actually figuring out

38:53 bell curve, right? And so F is over here and it's 50%

39:00 means that, that ac may not be between a 70 a and an

39:06 it may be a lot lower. so you have to adjust in your

39:10 , what your numbers actually mean. right. The second thing I'd add

39:15 is that extra credit. So I give you grades and scores with extra

39:21 in it until the end of the . It's a waste of time to

39:24 so. All right, I, I figure out what everyone's grade is

39:29 on a curve, then I add the extra credit. And so if

39:33 grade was here without the extra what's gonna happen is, is after

39:37 extra credit, your grade is And so you actually get the real

39:42 from the extra credit. That's why do that. All right. So

39:47 there gonna be a curve? We know yet, but there probably will

39:50 one. All right. How do figure out the curve? I don't

39:53 add points. I'm using a normal . It's just a statistical way of

39:59 out what grades actually mean. And will tell you that after every exam

40:04 the distribution looks like. And then about the extra credit? I add

40:08 at the end of the semester. you want to calculate your grades with

40:11 extra credit, you can. But me, it's a waste of time

40:14 do. So. So I'm not do that. I think that covers

40:17 but let me just click the Yep. No, that's everything.

40:20 just going back. Um If you any questions, you can uh you

40:25 email me, but really probably the thing is it's probably questions that everybody

40:30 the answer to. So on Thursday give a little bit of time to

40:34 able to answer some questions about But this should be pretty straightforward.

40:41 go and answer the assessment questions, orientation. Um And it will see

40:46 or not you picked up everything. You will see on, on uh

40:52 link on the recorded lectures. Uh link to this video. I'm gonna

40:57 the announcement to where to go for . And there'll be a link for

41:02 video that talks about how to study the class, which follows this

41:06 So I would encourage you to go watch that video as well if you

41:10 to do well on the course. I will see the rest all of

41:14 . Hopefully on Thursday
